Hello all I have been thinking about doing a big katana comparative review, it has been on my mind for many months. If I do it the way I want to (with pictures from all the kats I wil review, a cutting video starring all of them and comparing all their characteristics) it will be a very large piece of work but I think it will also be very informative and different from other reviews (I will probably use this article as inspiration ; www.sword-buyers-guide.com/katana.html ). This big review will include, minimally, the three katanas that I own (a 100 $ Katana from handmadesword.com, a Musashi beater and an Hanwei Practical Light) and may include a few more katanas. I wanted to share this with everyone, maybe your posts will end my procastination and make me write down this article. So, what do you people think ?

Sounds like a winner to me I am always interested in seeing cutting tests with Kats, I have more of that type than any other type of sword

Well, I currently Have a Musashi Bamboo (poor blade already hehe) and a Cheness Tenchi (Still can't get the thing apart). Soon the SBG custom will be in the mix and possibly another from the forums. I can help if you want.
also, hi, never really been posting on the forums, been hiding in the background.

Hello Makton
Welcome to SBG, hope you will like beeing here.
About the review ; thanks for offering your help, however, I intend to include katanas that I will be able to at least hold in hand and take pictures of (beeing able to cut with them is a big plus, too). If you live near me (around the city of Montreal in Quebec), send me a pm and we will see what we can do.

sir' sebastian, that sounds excellent because the beater class katana's need more attention as to review as you have described. Please do this, you will be providing a great service to many modest means sworders who want good value in their small investment. I have one of those Musashi 'bamboo' katana's w/differential blade and cost about 80$ and that thing is wicked fast-sharp-straight-tight. I look forward to your review. HEY swordmonger7, "Cats are Cool" Yeah fallschirmjager, so far all of my best bottle cutting swords ar Kats When I get my BKS Fantasy Leafblade, I am hoping it will be my best cutter since it will be my highest quality and most expensive sword ;D

I can't think of a single reason why you shouldn't do this! Excellent idea and I am sure a lot of people would be very interested in this type of review.

Hello Thana I intend to cut water-filled plastic bottles and small beach mats (which are, I believe, a good test of a katana's cutting power, when one doesn't have easy access to tatamis ). I am excited about this project and will probably start writting it down next week-end. It will take some time and lots of effort to complete but I think it will be a fun thing to do.

maybe it would sound funny to you but did you ever think of cutting some straw you find about everywhere in nature? (highway is a good place too ) or maybe trying to cut toothpick without breaking it would be a nice test according to me for the sharpness ;D (i plan on doing this once i get my first kat) everytime i think about the toothpick cutting it makes me laugh a little but i think it would be a nice test as toothpicks usually bent or break but if you can get a clean cut out of it then.... it will be funny ;D oh and liamboyle i too think daos are cool, well everything that is single edged for my part so kats and falchions doesn't fall out of the categorie
