Hello Etienne I like the straws idea ; making half-foot wide rolls of straw would make funny-looking cutting rolls, IMHO . However, I will probably have to use only beach mats because I live in an urban area and drive a small urban car, so gathering mounds of straw would be too much trouble About daos, I like 'em a lot, they get less attention then they deserve IMHO (same goes for about any blade from southeast asia). They are kick-ass swords and I'd love to own one.

Hi Sebastian,
I was wonderin where you get your beach mats, and how much you pay for them.
I tried Dollorama yesterday, and they don't have any.

Hello Takezo I saw beach mats at a 1$ store near my home in Montreal. I saw them there a few weeks ago but didn't buy any (they were about 2 to 3 $ per mat, depending on the mat's size). I hope they still have some left, or it will be bottles cutting only

If you can give me the 2 street corners where it is located, I could maybe go and check.

Coin Honoré-Beaugrand et Sherbrooke, à côté de la station de métro Honoré-Beaugrand, dans un tout petit centre d'achat

hey sebastian are you up for a toothpick challenge (not really expensive ;D ) for the straw i live in a rural area so for me it wouldn't be a problem but soaking news paper would be nice (and less tricky to get )

sir' sebastion...you are causing some excitement now in anticipation of comparative review and yes, conversions are more a result of enlightenment by convertee, rather than convertor' I am sure sir' LiamBoyle as a student of the art has read Musashi's significant instruction manuel. Our good friend sir' LiamBoyle may find his conversion in the school of Two Heavens, as many of us have ;D This is a very fun thread you have started sir' sebastion ' Five Rings' to All I have read the Book of Five Rings, but alas I am loyal to my Chinese Internal martial style (along with a touch of German longsword). That and my off hand weapon tends to be objects other than swords.

Isn't a katana technically a dao?

I can't answer that, but I would say that the ''slightly curved, single-edged 25'' to 30'' blade sword'' category holds a very large number of bladed weapons

Give me a good Dao over a Kat or Waki any day. Isn't a katana technically a dao? Liam, he has somewhat of a point... you might not think them brothers, but they are cousins at the very least given the history of katana. remember, i once told you that my brother accuses me of using a katana like a dao. i reckon a person unarmed that knows how to use a dao, should find one in battle, could use it as such. however, i realize it is the hype you speak against. i like the looks of a well made kat myself, but just prefer CSA due to my training. i suppose if i had been trained JSA rather than CSA, i would prefer kats.. but hey that is only theory. too much television gets to one's mind. as for OP... cant wait for your reviews dude we are excited.

The kat is descended from the Dao this is true. They are related blades, but the loss of the pommel counts for a lot in my book. There are dao techniques that are very specific to having a pommel.
If I had less people telling me kat's were the "best sword evar..." and thinking to $40 version the local head shop sells were working blades I might have a higher opinion of them. It's the fan-boy hype I have issue with, not the blades. Although I might break down and get a decent quality Katana and Iaido set at some point but I want my Jin-Shi's and Euro's first.

Liam, this non-traditional Kat has a pommel, I have one, and the longer version of it, and its one of my best bottle cutters: budk.com/Swords/United-Black-42-Inch-Full-Tang-Samurai-SwordYeah, I know it's a United, and I know its from BudK, but I like it's performance, and BudK has a few good blades among the SLO's, IMO

Actually, I've heard the United Black are half decent beaters. If I don't win the Reilks contest for that Hanwei mat kat I might consider it.

hey Liam, no kiddin' about katana hype, I do luv em'...but geez everyone thinks I'll get my Hattori Hanzo steel' (no airplane ticket to Okinawa) at Billy's headshop (ha ha BILL and probably hurt themselves unless they tune in to this forum ;D, anyways I like your thoughts on the never-ending but interesting conversation OK swordmonger7, I like your United BudK sword, but in description it mentions "heavy blood groove", I must know if this in any way helps in "chiburi"... hey Bro' a sharp sword is a sharp sword.. enough of this, lets let 'sebastion' get back to work a buch of folks like to call it a blood grove so it gets attention for sales... just a gimmick. a fuller is for strength and balance and weight. it provides strength when lighter. i have the UC black ikazuchi, and the yoru doragon waki... purdy darned good for price point. the both have fullers... oh i mean blood grove...LOL
