Below are some pics of my new Gen 2 12th Century sword (the one I've been telling Paul I was going to get for a year now ;D) and en suite dagger. Reviews will be forthcoming (eventually, so busy lately ). For now, I'll just say thanks to Clyde and the other good folks at Gen 2. Both pieces are built like tanks, and they have perfect edges (just the way I described in the sharpening thread) for cutting, AND the blade on the sword displays the perfect degree of rigidity (no Windlass floppiness here). No question, it's nicely flexible but NOT at all floppy. To me, these are a step up from many other swords (actually, all other swords) in their price range. These guys have leather covered wood scabbards with steel furniture, leather over hardwood grips, and nicely peened tangs. Without further ado:

I like and own both brands of swords, but if I had to go into battle I would carry a Gen 2.
Gen 2 Swords are mot tanks or crowbars anymore. They are now just as light as the Windlass but with stiffer blades. Just look at the weight and balance points of the swords below.
- The Shrewsbury Sword by Windlass - balance point of 3-1/2 inches and weighs 2.5 pounds.
- The Lucerne Sword by Gen 2 - balance point of 2-1/4 inches and weighs 3 pounds.
Both swords are nearly identical in profile and weight. I have used and own both of them. I have not done it on any hard targets yet, but putting the tip of each on the ground and pushing the Shrews bends with very little pressure while the Lucerne takes some effort to bend (both spring back when pressure is released). Eventually I will do this side by side and see what the bend point of each is and how many pounds of pressure is required. I also plan on attempting to thrust each through chainmail.

Looks good Kriegschwert. Can you post a picture holding the sword by the handle that shows the whole blade. Thanks.

The fact that one is happy with his sword is enough. Don't criticize the sword of other people. Windlass make some good products.

I am glade Gen 2 fans like enjoy swords built like tanks myself, I prefer swords built like swords!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I understand what you are saying and you are correct. There are some Windlass items I do like (For one thing Hank helped design allot of them). But I do like what people are saying why they like the Generation 2 swords. There are allot of people out there that still believe our swords are too heavy but the numbers and postings are showing otherwise. And I would say our swords are built like swords. People still talk about Generation 2 as being tanks and crowbars. I do not like seeing that, and I am glad people are posting how they feel now. But I still do not like another company being run down. I and everyone involved with Generation 2 are working and always in the continuous improvement mode to make them the sword people will prefer. I was very shocked, but I was glad to see that the Windlass blade did hold up. I was more shocked that the Hanwei sword bent. And it bent in the Primary CoP balance point of 13" from the tip. That is hard to believe. Clyde Hollis

Hey Clyde, I am happy that you replied to this, I own a Gen 2 sword(falcata) and I am happy with it. I just found that people have a tendency to be short sighted and a little bias. I believe that each companies produce swords that suit the specific needs of people. All I was trying to say was to keep an open mind. Try and see what you like best. I love swords, all swords. I am not about to limit myself to one company. I own pieces from Gen 2, Windlass, Cold Steel ,Hanwei and love all of them for different reasons. But this is only my opinion.

I always like to see what I am up against! ;D Clyde Hollis

Whoa! Obviously, a couple of my comments have been misinterpreted. First, when I say that my G2's are built like tanks, I mean that they feel extremely solid and durable, not that they are overly heavy, clunky, or crowbar like in any way. In fact, on the sword, COG, COP, weight, etc. are right where they should be on a sword of this type. Second, I was merely making an observation regarding G2 vs. Windlass in the area of blade stiffness. I don't dislike Windlass at all, but WS blades are overly flexible in many cases and somewhat softer than those from other companies (mid to upper 40's HRC for Windlass vs. low to mid 50's HRC for G2, as an example). P.S. Bill, I'll get a photo of the complete sword in hand ASAP. There was nobody else around when I took those pics, so I had to hold the cam in one hand and the sword in the other, hence, I couldn't get the whole thing in the pic.

Anyone that thinks a G2 is too slow and clunky only need pick up the Lucern or the new version Black Prince weigh in at about 3.3 lbs and haveing survived 2000 strikes on my tire-pell. mysite.verizon.net/tsafa1/swordreview.htm#lucProof that it is posible to get nimbleness and durability in a sword.

Nice swords man.
I'm not too keen on the hilts but the blades look outstanding!
obviously they are just as tough as the normal gen2 expectation, right ;D?

Nice swords man. I'm not too keen on the hilts but the blades look outstanding! obviously they are just as tough as the normal gen2 expectation, right ;D? I wasn't super fond of the hilts, myself, when I first saw pics of them a year or so ago. It terms of historical appearance, they don't really match some of the better Windlass swords, for example; however, the look has grown on me, and they (the hilts, that is) are extremely comfy and very solid. The blades look top notch. There are some obvious grinding marks on both (as Paul also noted), but both blades are arrow straight, sharp, and otherwise clean looking (no waviness, flat spots, etc.). Obviously, the dagger's blade is stiff as a board, being as short as it is, which is how it should be. As to the sword's blade, I can't say enough about it's attributes. I stuck the tip into the carpet and pressed down on the pommel (my own cheapified British Proof Test ;D) and it flexes and returns to true nicely. The balance between flexiness and stiffness on this blade is just dead on. I own an older Gus Trim sword (which also displays a few grind marks of its own) and the G2 blade feels very similar in this regard, which is saying a lot.

I think a blade and hilt should be simple. A sword is a tool, just like a screwdriver. Who values a screwdriver with a fancy handle? Why would you bother to pay extra for a fancy handle on a screwdriver? Later 15th and 16th century rapiers had very fancy swept hilts but those had a practical purpose of protecting the hand. Earlier medieval sword with fancy hilts were just court swords. You did not take those into battle.
Just my two cents.

I disagree. A sword is a work of art as well as a weapon. By that logic swords are worthless, we should all use axes. much easier to make, and hack armour even better The hilt is JUST as important as the blade IMO
