It's not made by any smithy that I know of...so I'd call it a prop item only. The guard/pommel look alot like the Kit Rae / United Cutlery Sword of Vaelen - UC1121: The sword, as it appears in the photos I can find of the Legend of the Seeker move sword does not fit into the Typology. I can see why you would make the comparison, with the blade form and fuller width/length. There are too many other differences for it to be in the Type X family. The prop is probably milled from a block of alumnium or polyurathane and painted by some unknown Hollywood prop shop - like with so many other movies. Those guys can draw up pretty good prop swords, but they have no knowledge of historical form, function, or construction.

Ah yes, hot chicks wielding weapons in tight leather,. ;D....there was a sword.....LoL It is a ( fantasy ) stage steel sword made by Mainreactor in New Zealand. They have steel & aluminum versions. They do prosthetics & props, clothing, swords, etc. for a lot of the movies made out there. They did stuff for Xena series & some of the end of Hercules series,Spartacus movie, even movies like Bridge to Terabithea, Tom Cruise's Last Samurai, Narnia,...& of course the Seeker series. When I first watched the show & saw the sword of truth, I thought it was very Kit Rae-ish. They're starting to sell stuff off on EBay from the show now.

I bought one years ago. Got the certificate. Gonna make a sheath for it. Oh hey there's a huge Xena convention next year in Cali.
We need more shows like that. I can't stand the crap that's on tv.

I tried to watch this TV show and just could not stand it. you see I have read the books and loved them greatly as some of the best fantasy writen in recent times. the TV show episodes I saw were in the very beginning and they were already so far off-story I had a hard time even recognizing the story. All I remember was sitting there watching it and ripping it up one side and down the other with things that turned me off about it. I really wanted to like this show, I really did but I just couldn't. I would like to see the Mord Sith though, as you say: hot women in tight leather with their little agiel to poke and prod poor unfortunates with. I always liked the idea of the agiel especially the part about it hurting the weilder along with the victim. I wonder if they portray that in the show. . .

NOTE: I wrote this before I saw Odingaard's post. He knows more than I surely (way more). And, I would appreciate any "lessons" I can get from anyone. I have my head in books too often. But I already wrote this so I'll post it.
Giving benefit of doubt
It could be an X type that had been re-hilted in the 13th to 16th c (not unheard of) - except for a problem I see.
The blade is X type. 28-31" length, broad with slight taper, full fuller. It would have had a 5.5-6.25" tang (guessing) and begun life with a different guard and pommel. The problem is two fold. The tang on the sword pictured would be 6.75+ to accommodate the long grip (type X were one handed - that sword is a bastard from the looks in the photo). Also, the guard is at best 14c, and type X are older - and it's an exaggerated style as well. So, Xa blade, but not an Xa "package".
I think whoever made it knew something about swords. It's a plausible weapon and could be balanced. But as said above, prop makers are not inclined to be accurate unless told.
If you want to know if it is real - I would bet not. Prop swords are expensive to make the first one of, but after that you can pop a few out a day for cheap. They are light and easy to wield and hard to hut others with - but they take damage and movie swords have to look like you just got them back from the sword cleaners at all times. So, they just make a bunch.
IME - what little I have.
At anyrate - at least I have a show to track down.

Yes Tom... they did cover how the agiel is painful to the user as well as the victem. I enjoyed this show... likely I enjoyed it alot because I never read the books. I have found this to be the best way to enjoy adaptations from book to TV and Film. Almost every adaptation from a book I knew and loved fell FAR short in TV and Film... but if I had no prior knowledge of the story in question... I can enjoy the TV/Film version and not be annoyed. Later I can go and read the book.... and be even more thrilled if it is better then the TV/Film. Thus... I get happy twice... instead of being happy once and disapointed later.

I would have probably loved the show if I hadn't read the books. But Raimi can't make a unique fantasy show, he's never been able to (staring really hard at Hercules and Xena right now). I loved his past shows, but this story has such a broader scope that I was very sad when I learned Raimi got the deal. It should have been passed on to someone, not more competent because Sam is very skilled, but someone who "gets" the story.
As for the sword, that's like the hardest thing to get wrong...there's an illustration of it at the beginning of every chapter, and on several of the books. There have even been (unlicensed) replicas made that even Terry said were quite remarkably done. And there was really no reason to change the look of the sword, nothing in the change that helps the characters or the story. Only serves to aggravate fans because the detail is something they had no reason to get wrong, just shows that they don't get the story as a whole; especially the sword's impact on Richard's characterization.
I will say that, from the ten or twelve episodes I watched, I really did love the casting/writing for Zedd. I hope they don't mess up his more serious parts of the story, though.

I pretty much just stay away from TV shows based on books, expecially if I haven't read the book. I understand that getting to enjoy it twice but really in my opinion it is getting lesser enjoyment twice as opposed to getting a great deal of enjoyment once. especially in the case of these books as they are so very good. when I read a book for the first time I don't like to know how it is going to end, or anything about it at all.
yup pretty much all the pictures of the sword are pretty much the same and they appear at the begining of every chapter throughout the entire 10 book set and each book is in the 800 page range of thickness with typically 40-ish chapters. so fans who have read the entire set have seen the sword about 400 times. we know what it looks like.

There're eleven books Tom. Twelve if you include Law of Nines and thirteen if you count Debt of Bones. I still need to finish LoN, I loved how it tied in with the ending of Confessor.

I was unaware of "Law of Nines" thanks, I'll have to look that up. I miscounted the main set then, thanks for clearing that up. I guess that means that most of us fans have seen the sword closer to 450 times. . .

It's not really a "sequel" to Sword of Truth, but once you get through the first couple of chapters, you'll see that it might as well be. Some great references for fans and such.
