Thought I would share the results of about a half hours work with my trusty chainsaw (talk about a cutter!) on some of the 30 feet (top half of what used to be a 60 footer) of tulip poplar that landed in my back yard about a week ago. Hanging around here has finally moved me to set up for some cutting. Following advise gleaned from some threads here I made these about waist high and a little lower. Only metal involved is a few 10 pennies nailing down the tops, so maybe I’ll avoid serious edge nicks when the inevitable ka-chunk occurs… Don’t know how well these will hold up to being out in the weather – already showing some cracks from drying – but they were easy enough to put together that I can just replace them. Trees are always landing in my backyard! Now all I need is some time to have at them! a little of the original raw material at the left nothin' fancy suburban hillbilly/hippy chainsaw wood butchery!

Thanks, Slack! When you've got the building materials dropping from the sky it feels so good to "just say no" to Home Depot! Hahahah And thanks for the+!
You're right on the mark, Marc, about cracky poplar - I mean the whole freakin' tree cracked right in half, eh?!?!
Hey, Liam - I sort of thought I'd get you with the "hillbilly/hippy wood-butchery", hahahaha Fuzzy chicken with a jian, right on!
Right you are, Patrick! Except I should have added decent weather to the "needed list" along with time... Very wet and raining today, hmmm, more time to work on projects inside...
Many thanks, JohnWalter! When I'm having morning coffee with my better half I see them sitting out there and they kind of fit in with the whole forest behind us, like a couple of toadstools or something... They also sit there saying "you know you want to be out here cutting..." Hahahaha

I really like them too.
maybe it is a trick of camera angle but two of them look like they have non-level tops. you'll want to level them off if that is true. either way when next you cut you will be cutting in style. please shoot us a video.
+1

Nice, and you can just set some flower pots on top of them when not in use and leave them sitting around the back yard!

remember: remove flower pots before cuttin. failure to do so could raise domestic tensions.

Thank you Ric!
Tom, at first I was concerned about the non-level tops. Then I realized that there wasn't a single spot in my backyard that was level! So it works (theoretically) out that I'll be able to position them to accomodate the uneven ground!
Only danger, Jeff, is if the flower pots slide off them (uneven terrain - unlevel tops...) in between cutting engagements. Lucky my better half is less of a gardener than I am; I should be safe on that account! Hahahaha

Y'know, I've got a bunch of ~3" sections from cutting down a bunch of privet just sitting in the shed, and I've been eyeing them off with a view to turning them into cutting stands....
Well done Mr. Beard, those are covered in awesome-sauce! +1 from me too!
Cheers

Now thats an inventive idea for sure. When life give you lemmons you make lemonade. When your given tree stumps you make cutting stands. Who'd of thunk it?
You know what would be really cool...One of those chainsawed carved bears holding a cutting platform over his head. ;D
modified for spelling.

Margshus, I actually have been making lemonade by pounding 'em on these loggers - great minds, you know... But the bears... well, they're a little out of my league - chainsaw wise. Hahahaha And Sir, well, this updates for you, ol' buddy.

Always happy to provide a cause for mirth, Sir! Glad you enjoyed it. The sword is what is known, I believe, as a "Cadet Sword", made by many companies. This one is by N.S. Meyer of West Germany, a relic of my youthful incarceration at a military school down South, long ago. No edge to speak of, but I remember one being thrust clean through three textbooks (not mine... oh no...) after a particularly painful room inspection.
