Hey guys, I was randomly searching around on the web and came across this. I'm not sure how new this news is, but I did a few searches here on SBG and couldn't find any refference to it. www.valyriansteel.com/shop/swords/needle-sword-of-arya-stark/prod_3.htmlI emailed the company to inquire about it's temper because while some people might spend $180 on a wall hanger, I won't. Here's there reply: "Process of Heat Treatment 1. Pre - heat treat in the oven at 1688°F for refining, and temper at 464°F. 2. Keep the temperature between 752°F - 952°F in another oven, and water quench at 1544°F. The hardness of blade after quenching is about 55HRC. 3. Temper based on the hardness request. Heat to 600°F then air cool. After tempering is about 53HRC." So, it looks like for the fans of the "Fire and Ice" series out there, here is a functional and attractive sword. I didn't know which forum to put it in as it's not so outlandish to get dumped in the "Fantasy" blades section. I don't think I'd sharpen mine tho, the detailed etching probably wouldn't like it. Has anyone gotten one of these or heard anything about them?

That's a rather attractive, though small, sword. I'm not familiar with the books (I'm assuming this is a book?) but the design has my interest. Shame it's unsharpened, though. I'm rather curious to the tang assembly... In other words, yeah, anybody have one?

One of the best fantasy book series ever. I wouldn't risk trying to cut with that thing though.

To me, it looks like whoever designed this blade looks like they knew what they were doing. If I got one, I think I'd cut with it. I read the description again and the laser etching is only the serial number. I thought there were some patterns, but I"m glad there isn't.

There will be a flood of swords from these books once the series starts airing on HBO. For those that haven't read the series, it is very good.

wonderful books. needle is the sword of one of the female leading characters, Arya Stark.
Long Claw is that of Jon Snow, half brother to Arya.

I agree, great books. Though to be honest, it is not something I would recommend to young, impressionable readers: In other words, parents be careful!
I can't wait for the HBO series. It should be amazing.

I've heard the HBO series is starting this summer. I was only recently introduced to the books and I'm only 3/4 of the way through the first one. HBO will be doing a season per book, so if you'd like to read them before watching the series, then you still have time.
But I really wish that someone on this forum had bought one of these so we could get a review.

Great series but do not read them.... Nothing worst then to get involved in a good series where the author decides not to finish it --- but recommends you to read his new series - yeah right not going to happen. Seriously, the author is going to get around to finishing them some day - 5 years later..... The last time he undated his blog was 1/2008.
This is the first book in series GAME OF THRONES by George R R Martin.

From this point on, if I have NOT read something, and there is going to be a move/TV show of it, I will not read it first... because then 9 times out of ten the movie/show is disappointing... ...however, if I watch it first, it might be awesome... and then later if I read it, the book might be even better. Why set myself up for disappointment?

Anyway, I'm a pretty big fan of teh books but I'm not sure if I'd buy this. If someone reviews it first and it turns out to be decent and usable I might though. Edit: Some pictures of the actress playing Arya with her Needle replica: grrm.livejournal.com/146489.html

Damnation. I had always imagined needle as a rapier/sword rapier rather than this. The cross is too.... medieval. I dunno, I really think it should me more elegant than this, truth be told. I'm a little disappointed.

I kinda did to, but I like the look of this. Martin explained that it has a normal medieval hilt because that's all the smith who made it knew how to do. I kinda like the combination.

As far as looks go, everyone had commented (on the site with the pics) that it's EXACTLY how they pictured her.
Far be it from me to judge anyone's imagination, but Arya was described as having a horse face. That kid looks nothing like a horse.
Also, as far as the looks of the Needle, the blade is how I pictured it, but I thought that the hilt would at least have the profile S curve. But I suppose the reasoning that the smith only made the cruciform style hilts makes sense.

That kid looks weird. Is her character supposed to be that creepy looking? Wow, I'd not bothered to look but now that I have...she does rather resemble the mood icon... Such a dreadfully large cranium...very imposing and in stark contrast to the narrow face and chin... Otherwise she looks pretty normal, I guess. Wait, they describe her as having a horse(-like) face? ...I'm not so sure I want to get that accurate here... Maybe I won't pick up this series...

Random, you would like it, I think. There's plenty of sex, violence and politics to it. But, back to the sword. I dunno, I guess my real problem with it is that it needs a LOT more profile taper to be akin to the braavos swords. The Braavos were basically described as using rapiers, and I'd be okay with a slightly more cruciform hilt to Needle if it had a more dramatic profile taper and a....
The way I saw it was. Slender blade with strong profile taper, kinda like the Hanwei Side-sword. Maybe a gentle s curve guard with a finger ring, and slightly shorter hilt, and a scent-stopper pommel. That's the Needle I always saw as kind of a compromise between the Westerosi XIIs and the Braavos rapiers. Dunno, that's just me though.

When I saw the thread title, I immediately thought of the Bakshi/Frazetta movie collaboration, "Fire and Ice."
Instead, what I find is Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" series of novels. Let's just say I'm not a Martin fan and let it go at that.
Nice sword, though.
Edited to correct an egregious spelling error.

She wasn't so much described as looking like a horse as taunted by other kids that she did. As for being kinda creepy, considering how many people she ends up murdering and that she might end up becoming a professional assassin in the next book or two, I think a little bit of creepiness suits her.
