Awesome father and son cutting... looks like a HELL of a lot of fun. A huge +1 for that! I've been very interested in these katana since that whole thread you mentioned, and have wanted to get my hands on one. They seem to have better then avarage fittings for the price-point... it just comes down to the blade, and using it to see how it feels. Thanks for a very informative review!

Good stuff, Marc; thanks for sharing. Had I to spare I'd pick one up, myself. I do respect Ronin Katanas and the gentleman who heads the biz but I will admit to being the biggest skeptic when the "hamon" issues arose. I'd sure like to go back and just try one out, but blast it if I simply can't afford to.

Outstanding review; those Ronin katanas look beastly! And beautifully well-made... I think they look comparable to some of the $400-500 swords.
Your karma has surpassed 300!

Marc, thanks for the great review it's good to know that both versions are equally good. I really like the fitting and fit and details on the one I have.
I agree with you that they are really good swords for the price point.
thanks for the confirmation of their quality, coming from you that means something.

another superb review Marc. informative, entertaining and extremely creative! I would not doubt the constitution of these blades for a second, tested and proven for sure. the two of you make a great slice and chop duo and as always, great music in the video!

I had planed on buying one of these for my son's x-mas gift, but the delay and negative thread really put me off. Between Tom's review and this one I am finally off the fence.

Nice write up I recently bought the #5 a few weeks ago when I got the SBG coupon in the mail, the deal was just to good to say no. I was on the wall between a ronin and the cheness cutter with that extra wide blade... but the price made the decision and I like the silk wrapped tsuka. So far the most I have done with it was cut up some boxes we had from moving, and I had fun with some cardboard tubes. it held its edge pretty darn well on all of that cardboard. ;D A few things I noticed... Wax in the saya, lots of wax... I'm not sure how to clean it out... Kojiri: while very pretty, I can see what looks like a bubble on the surface telling me it's an epoxy of some sort. Tsuba: I love the design and the thickness, but it's very sharp in the cut outs. I love The wrap (samegawa?), but it's a little uneven in places, not a big deal though. Kashira, not bad, I would like a more curved one, and I have a strong mold seam. Fuchi: not bad but it feels like plastic... I plan on changing both of them out. Overall I love the sword, it's a very nice piece and a great cutter. I have it displayed proudly in my front room with the saya sitting under it on the stand.

Well today I took my old sword I had in storage, I beat the hell out of it when I was younger (I had goods times with it but I no longer have a use for it) and put it to rest with a M4 and some 855 tungsten penetrator and snapped the blade in about 9 pieces and broke the handle in about three pieces. It was a $90 sword back in 97, I had some good times with it but my new sword is 100x the sword. For it's last chop I tried to cut some wood from a target stand, I really felt what I was hitting through the handle... My new sword is a night and day difference, I was able to cut through a water bottle like it was nothing and I nicked a rug and thought I had just toutched it, well it went straight through the rug and into the carpet and through the padding and into the wood. All with just a light tap. I am very happy with the sword and even though the minor inperfections I pointed out in mine, it is a really good sword, and a very pretty piece. And even better after trying to cut some stuff with my old sword, it made my old sword really fell like a toy The Ronin sword is a very solid sword and a pretty piece to show off.

Are there any differences between the blades that come on the Ronin Katanas or it just differences in fittings, saya appearance, etc?

For this series, the blades are all the same. Fittings are different.
He has a lower series with 1045 blades that get great reviews and a higher level that will have some blade differences.
