Essentially was the key word in that statement because I know that there are many exceptions However, am I correct in assuming that MOST were curved?

Well first of all, most of the katanas we see these days are built to minimize cost and so they are built in the least expensive way possible. You look at some of the hanwei swords that are more expensive and you start to see things like the orchid and whatnot where the colour of the saya and tsuka-ito vary from the black and white. Having said that, most katana use the black and white wrap because it has been hollywoodified to seem like the norm for katanas. Also they use white same because it is the cheaper type of rayskin. The amazing thing and something katana makers should take into account is what iaito makers have learnt. You can't do much with changing the shape of the blade but having different patterns and colours on the saya makes all the difference. I love what hanwei have done with their cloud sword with the whole saya wrapped in same. To make the katana less boring changing colours of the tsuka and the saya would go a long way, unfortunately you can only do that really expensively.

I wish we could get some more blade variety in the lower end of the spectrum. Double-edged, straight (like the Honoto), etc. As wraith said, there's only so much the makers are gonna be able to do at the super low end level, but maybe Musashi or someone could add some blade variety in their midrange line ($200-300 range). Roger ( Zinje), what do you think?

Krieg: hate to burst your bubble my friend but 2-300 USD is not midrange, it is the low end. If you want to have them make some changes and whatnot to fittings and such the mid range would be more like 5-600 USD.

That's what I was talking about. In the Musashi line, specifically, that is the midrange. Sure, in the grand scheme that's still at the low end of kat prices, but I still think Musashi could probably put out something useable at that price.

The Honoto is a DGurtin sword Chop, whatever you do DONT order anything from him,( PM me for details) I was lucky enuff to pick this one up 2nd hand on the SFI classifieds. However... I am sworn to secrecy but there may be one coming into production soon This one is getting a make over with tachi style mounts as the style was from about 700ad.

I would like to see a little more variety. Recently I bought a Ryumon katana (a new test model, only a few made no part number even) similar to the Oni Forge model reviewed here: /index.cgi?action=display&board=swordreviews&thread=1176049669&page=1 It was a display model (in like new condition) so I picked it up dirt cheap ($150.00 USD). There were four put up for sale initially, but they all sold out almost immediately. I was really happy to get it just because I was looking for something a little different. Sol

Yeah like the blade, the koshirae is a bit on the boring side. Can see why you are getting the make over ! Just remember to post those pictures when you receive it back . As well ron, what is the length and steel consistency of the blade ? I tried a few years ago to bring a double edged scimitar back from the middle East but when I arrived back in Oz, was informed that because of both the edges being sharpened I could not bring it in. Did you buy it in Oz or have it shipped over mate ?

I havent actually held it yet Chop, the guy selling it wouldnt ship to Aus so I had it sent it straight to a mate who is doing the make over. Its 1070 steel and a 60cm blade.I'm hoping I wont having any troubles getting into the country, if worse comes to worse I will get an import permit for it.My Yari has 3 sharp edges and they come in OK.
