i now own several swords, a few of which are Chinese styles. The Hanwei Dadao has a utilitarian style that makes it very handy. but when it comes to sword play and even cutting, my Jin-Shi production jian has to be my favorite. even when it took a knick in the blade... about 1mm... from bolcking a student cutting a bottle from overswinging and hurting himself, his sword took about a 2 1/2 mm knick, still stands up as the best. i just wanted to let you know this. also i will probably be getting one of your custom swords in the future.... that tang jian really draws my attention.
this is a copy of a message that i sent garrett. i just wanted you all to know that even tho i own a Hanwei/Rodell, the jin-shi is still tops in my book.
any body that owns a jin-shi, please post the applause for garrett here so all chinese sword enthusiats can see it.

I'm having Garrett replicate some of my more interesting antiques. His company sure makes changes a lot quicker than some of the larger forges. A few of my pieces have interested him in terms of possible standard offerings in the future.
Garrett lives in same city as me, so it's very handy for him to examine my antiques and make diagrams/notes for his boys at the forge!!!
His blades have a more accurate geometry and better steel than either Hanwei or Huanuo. I nicked up my Royal Peony and Hanwei Rodell jian parrying his very early production jian....current ones are much improved!

Wow, that sounds really exciting Gundoggy. Please keep us up to date with lots of wonderful pictures and stats as they are completed.
I have not yet gotten a Jin-Shi, but it is definitely on for the the next purchase. I just bought a sword, but still need to replace my rusted jian. Given the wait time for one of these customs. I will be ordering soonish, in a month or two maybe sooner.
I had not yet done research on jian when I ordered my other sword. Since ordering I had focused upon jian and dao, being the next to styles I want. Jin-Shi has definitely impressed me as the place to go.

Gundoggy, i have to agree as to the superiority of jin-shi over hanwei. my rodell has been a disappointed to me. i never have had to do any work on my jin shi production model. if it any indication of the custom models... well you get the picture. the only problem is which one do i get next. as i stated the tang jian has my attention. i have a united black ikazuchi... which looks like japanese version of it and am very happy with the style, but it isnt as tough. it was the one that the jin shi nicked keeping my bro from cutting himself during bottle cutting. they are rated the same HRC but i would have to think that the metal difference or smithing has made a big improvement for jinshi.

Waiting for my jin-shi, was a toss up between that an an ipad, still wondering if I made the right decision. Considering what I am getting I am not sure I could ever bring myself to cut with it, one scratch and I think I will weep tears of blood.

Bloodwraith: Don't get an ipad. www.hp.com/slate Windows 7, has usb port, has smart card expansion slot, can use stylus, cheaper... Should be out in a month or two.

Bloodwraith: Don't get an ipad or a HP Slate, just get some good sharpening and polishing stones, so you can fix up your pretty Jin-Shi after you cut with it. Stupid tech will be obsolete before the package gets to you. Constantly have problems, need updates, and probably break just when your completely dependent upon it. A pretty sword will bring you smiles for the rest of your life. ;D

Well when I get mine I believe it will be the first twistcore ordered from jin-shi so I am very excited about that and the fact that I can get a twistcore blade with my own specs is just that much more awesome and the price I've paid is absolutely, without doubt of contradiction, unbeatable. Who'd have thought it? Not even 2 years ago would I have been able to order a piece like this for less than a grand, times have changed and the sword market is now much more fleshed out and competitive than ever, though that could be dangerous in and of itself but time will tell.

Jin-shi is pretty much my favorite as well. While I don't own many live blades, I've handled some, as well as owned the more forms suited Hanwei jian. They just don't compare to the one Han Jian I got from Garrett. I got it last year, and it still cuts like a laser. It's also the best balanced sword I own, even above the Adam Hsu jian, which is a much lighter sword, and thus not really suited to be considered the real thing. I'm definitely planning on getting another one from Jin-Shi; the quality and unbeatable price is just too apparent at this point.

Why would anybody want to do that? I decided ages ago that when I finally start to dabble in Chinese arms, it'll be with Jin-Shi. A buddy of mine had been eying various Han jian for a while when I showed him a review somebody did here for one they got from Jin-Shi. Haven't spoken much to the guy since...

I'm probably gonna have to get on the Jin-Shi bandwagon eventually. Not until after I've had something made by Brenno though.
I think that I'd most likely go for a han jian. Would like one that looks more like those awesome little copper Warring States jian though. Okay, I don't think they were that little, but I think they're kinda... "cute". So, little it is. Do not question my manliness!

Something like this? www.arscives.com/bladesign/kendall_ancientsword.htmDelicious Yeah I could vouch for Garrett's Jin-Shi products. The key is Garrett knows a thing or two about Chinese swords. Not only the stuff you are getting from him is functional, you're getting a pretty accurate representation of Chinese sword of the period you are interested in.
