I joined the Corps because the Army recruiter I talked to had a billy-goat gruff beard, she really did. Not at the point of the chin, but down lower, halfway between chin and throat. And the other recruiter in the office had his shirt half untucked, and edge dressing on his hands.

Former Tugboatman/Com Fisher here, Just like to see some of the old traditions back, Beards and swords! And no, Foxey, ya cant have a Beard!!! LOL! No, I don't think I'll be sportn' a beard any time soon. Tom: Don't knock the Deck Apes too much. I use to be one ya know. . . and I turned out fine . . . Have I mentioned I'm really excited about this? I'd be very surprised if little brother doesn't follow suit. I remember a fellow Chief of mine telling me he had to tell a female Sailor she had to shave her beard. Apparently she didn't think she had to shave. It was an akward conversation after that. . .

It was an akward conversation after that. . . yeah I started out as a deck ape too but I saw the light pretty early in my career. it is my hallowed duty as an engineer to harrass deckies at every opportunity, and yes, I do enjoy it. in their defence one of the few chiefs that I really looked up to and respected as a junior member was a BMC I worked for in an Aids to Navigation Team I was part of as a young EM2. so even deck apes produce a few good people. I like to think of them as more evolved though. I too am excited. maybe someday our services will have us close together enough that we will be able to get a cutting party organized and take a video of a Coasty and Squid chief cutting together with our Cutlasses. that sounds like a fun day. if your ship is slow coming home I might just get to see your hubby at our cutting party here in near future (wouldn't want to screw opsec by being too specific.) it's too bad you would be too freshly returned to come play with us but I certainly understand the just-got-home-from-patrol-leave-me-the-hell-alone-so-I can-spend-quality-time-with-my-family sentiment.

So I've been out of the loop for a while as far as uniform issues are concerned (being out and about I really don't have to worry). So imagine my excitement and absolute joy when I read today that the Navy has approved the wearing of the cutlass for Chiefs in dress uniform (chocker whites for males and white single breast coat for females). I haven't seen who makes it yet or what it looks like, but I'm sure after Sean and I get a hold of it, we might make some changes to make it super awesome and still within regulations. ;D Happy Chief. cold steel and windlasssteelcraft both make replicas of said swords for greatly less than custom prices the offical ss model the carbon steel model the sheath blade and gaurd are almost identical maybe some etching required and I'm almost certine you could find some one in the machine shop or motor pool who could handle that

And of course you want to be able to fight with it! It's like how most of us have 'functional' swords, but don't go around stabbing the peasants and setting their huts on fire and... never mind. You know, I've been wondering who torched my most productive village. I hope you have friends or this will be boring...

"# Blade:
* Polished, stainless steel, 26-inch blade * Etched with “U.S.N.” near the leather stop * Unsharpened ceremonial edge, but the blade has a sharp tip * Has the fuller (groove)"
Ouch...
This is kinnda random, but I was wondering if you (FF) ever thought of becoming an NCIS agent.

yeah, like I'd trust Windlass or Cold Steel (same forge I think) make my Chief's Cutlass!
I think I'll muster the cash to get the official SS one then see about who I could get to take on the project of converting it to high carbon. Gus will definitely get rights of first refusal. afte him there's Tinker Lundemo and Brenno for sure, but I'd have to do some research

;D Funny you should mention BKS. They already made me a cutlass which I'm going to review when I get home. (Freakn' awesome, IMHO) I just need to see what the Navy actually would let me wear. I have a feeling the one they have authorized is going to look pretty ho hum. I just hope it's not a SLO, cuz I'll be mad. Yeah that would suck to have a stainless Navy issue sword, the Marine corp saber was. If you could get one made that would rock!

Well John... you were one of the first people I thought of to make a real one for her... any interest? ;D Still bursting with excitment waiting for my Odinblade... I've had a lot of bad news and lame crap happen recently, my Odin will be a ray of sunshine in an otherwise BS few weeks...

I'd rather stab myself in the eye with a hot french fry. lol looks like we have a Foamy fan here. Join the fan club or face the Squirly Wrath! oh yeah! John, if you check the link I posted earlier you will see that, yes, it is stainless. really why wouldn't it be? 99.9% of all chiefs in either the Navy or Coast Guard will want it only for ceremonies and nothing else. they certainly won't want to work to maintain it. "what the hell? I have to oil it? F that!" stainless is just better for almost all of us. it would be a bad move for the company to make it out of high carbon.

Dang it, I spend one day away from the forum to save you all from my "making another attempt at trying to quit smoking random acts of wrath and ill-temper" and look what happens... Foxy, I have heard about the BKS cutlass that was why I mentioned them. Howler, if you didn't replace her stainless GI PoS (should the national squid force make that move) with something better I would be very surprised at you. J/K However, an Odin, ATrim, Tinker, or Fable cutlass would just rock. For Wotan's sake I wish our military service would bring back bladed weapons. When I was in Bosnia-Herzegovina I wish I had been able to carry one. Half the places we were at I would have rather had something with a blade and an M79 as opposed to the M240 I had carried. Just don't take away the crew served weapon I had mounted on my M88 (MK19). I don't think the Brchko riots would have gotten as out of hand as they did had we been able to stand there with naked steel in our hands rather than standing at parade rest with our M16's. I think that the Army and Marine corps should have something along the lines of a hilted 24" blade machete (something along the lines of the CS Latin or Bowie point would work) and the Navy and Coast guard should have the cutlasses. Zoomers (air force) don't need to be given anything bigger than a 3" pocket knife. Anybody who asks me "where's the showers and the chow hall" while on field maneuvers in another country should not be trusted with a sharp stick much less anything else. Oh, I did mention I was trying to quit smoking again, right? Apologies in advance for any perceived grumps, rants, tirades, or other unpleasantness from my posting over the next few days.

Bladed weapons are making a comeback in Iraq and Afghanistan. At least among units that have to do any building clearance missions. It's one thing to run out of ammo or have a jam at the same time the bad guy in front of you does and have to race to see who gets a functional weapon first (butt stroke with an M4? You kidding?).
It's something else entirely to run out of ammo or have a jam at the same time the bad guy does and cut his ass down with your short sword or fighting knife and Then worry about fixing your gun.
