So I've been out of the loop for a while as far as uniform issues are concerned (being out and about I really don't have to worry). So imagine my excitement and absolute joy when I read today that the Navy has approved the wearing of the cutlass for Chiefs in dress uniform (chocker whites for males and white single breast coat for females). I haven't seen who makes it yet or what it looks like, but I'm sure after Sean and I get a hold of it, we might make some changes to make it super awesome and still within regulations. ;D
Happy Chief.

Dang squid, all I could from the army when I was in service was a barely sharpened bayonet. I'm certain you and Howler will firgure out something within regs that looks great - or you might have to schedule a trip up to BKS to get something made. I know that would be terrible to have to do

;D
Funny you should mention BKS. They already made me a cutlass which I'm going to review when I get home. (Freakn' awesome, IMHO) I just need to see what the Navy actually would let me wear. I have a feeling the one they have authorized is going to look pretty ho hum. I just hope it's not a SLO, cuz I'll be mad.

hey, that's very cool. I started a thread on this when the Coast Guard started talking about a Chief's cutlass. now that the Navy has authorized it the Coast Guard is pretty likely to follow in a monkey see monkey do move that every coasty knows and dreads, but in this case I'm looking forward to it. can't let you dang squid chiefs be the only ones able to wear swords damnitall.
unfortuneately, it will very likely be stainless steel if you get it from the contracted provider. The Coast Guard is using the Naval 1860 model cutlass, I would expect you guys might be using the same. I'm thinking it shouldn't be too hard to get one customized to replace the stainless blade with high carbon. if it is shaped right no one will ever know you changed it. besides the design regulation probably do not require stainless, just the right shape and hardware.
Congrats chief, I can't wait to see you wearing steel in uniform.
here's a link to the old thread: /index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=8175&page=1

50+ years and counting Taran.
Forestfox, that's great news, now you just need to dig up the old Manual of Arms for it.

Aren't the swords used by the Marine Corps, and such, SLOs too? Cold Steel made 'functional' versions relatively recently, right? Doubt the specs on the Chiefs' sword would be exactly the same as the pre-existing ones, though. Wouldn't want to shell out however much Cold Steel has theirs going for either.
Do keep us updated! I want to see the whole she-bang! Those uniforms tend to be pretty... dapper.

here it is: www.militarysabers.com/navy-nco-cutlass.html#designit is stainless steel. there has been some debate in the past as to whether that makes it an SLO or not. the only difference between the Coast Guard and Navy designs is the engraving of either USCG or USN on the blade near the leather stop. if they pass this design for the Coast Guard I intend to replace the stainless blade with High Carbon. maybe I can talk Gus into doing the blade and then I'd have an ATrim Cutlass. wouldn't that be cool? I suppose I should point out that this IS a ceremonial sword and therefore being stainless really isn't such a bad thing, still I want to be able to fight pirates and smugglers with mine. not that I ever WOULD, but I'd like to be able to.

Atrim Cutlass. *drools* And of course you want to be able to fight with it! It's like how most of us have 'functional' swords, but don't go around stabbing the peasants and setting their huts on fire and... never mind. Like, just because some of us hang our swords on our walls doesn't mean that those swords are wall-hangers! That sorta thing.

Looks like you will be able to change the blades pretty easy with the hex nut system - yeah famous last words. Now if they only allowed beards again... old squid here....

Heh... My plan will be to buy one... then send the thing either to Brenno (FableBlades) or John (OdinBlades) and have them build a new blade to spec for it, and re-mount it. That way it will appear in all ways to be the official PoS SLO sword... but will, in reality, be made of pure awesome and win... so that if my Foxy needs to do some hardcore killing in her dress whites, she will be well armed. ;D Tom: Gus is a great choice for this too, if he will do it for you. My Atrim Saber had a blade VERY similar in appearance to this one.

yeah, I don't know if he would be able to or even if his schedule would allow, it's merely a thought for the future anyway because if the Coast Guard doesn't follow big brother in this (that would be a surprise!) then I won't be doing it anyway.

I saw a bearded lady once. she strolled past the window of the Chipotle Burrito place I was eating lunch in. my buddies and I weren't sure we even really saw it at first but then a few minutes later she walked by again and this time sh ran her fingers through it and gave it a toss like she was in some kind of shampoo comercial.
this is not a joke, that actually happened.
I don't care if the sea-going services bring back beards or not but I wants me fricking sword man!
