Anyone here who owns any of the SBG brand swords, willing to write a really brief evaluation of your experience with the swords? Any information you have would be really useful.
Also if there were any customer service issues that would also be useful.

...There are many reviews and evaluations already. Even in a recent thread we saw one delivered with some damage, and Paul resolved the matter splendidly.
Check the review section for anything on the SBG Custom swords.

you loking for any particular sword? are we talking about the SBG brand katana or any sword sold in the SBG store? I can't speak to the quality of the new SBG custom kats or the kuramono etc. but I can say that I have dealt with the SBG store a few times and Paul has been just awesome. you hear a lot of talk around here about vendors with good customer service but for some reason Paul and the SBG store doesn't get mentioned that much. well Paul is the benchmark of good customer service. there are getting to be more and more sellers of the same caliber out there now days but no one I have yet dealt with or experienced really out does him; equal yes, better no. if you buy a sword from Paul it will either be a good sword and have no real issues or Paul will fix it for you so you do have a sword with no serious flaws. in the end you will get a good sword. just keep in mind that bad swords do come out no matter who you buy from. I have sent swords back to the best of vendors. the good news is good vendors like Paul take care of you and that's the most important thing for me.

Perhaps I was a little vague, I have been charged by Paul to write a review of the SBG brand for SMG. I am aware of the reviews, I was looking for something informal, Impressions, feelings and the like.

still pretty vague. what kinda info are you looking for that you haven't been able to find in the reviews and their accompanying discussion?

I am purposefully leaving it somewhat vague because I want a very general answer. However, since this is for Paul I am also trying not to bias the answers. I have read the reviews, but I was looking for some updated opinions of the swords. Again, the technical stuff is very useful in its own right. What I need are the sort of comments someone with little to no experience with production swords could relate to. Distal taper and center of percussion are all well and good for some of the more seasoned enthusiasts, but they can be a little discouraging to the noob who might be reading SMG for the first time and is just trying to get his/her bearings.

For what it's worth: I have the $330 SBG katana. I like it: The fittings are sturdy, the blade is sharp, durable, and well-made.
The idea behind this katana was to make a very well-made blade in basic, sub $300-katana fittings. The buyer could keep the katana blade in the fittings, or upgrade with a private vendor of their choice. Personally, I have no complaints with the fittings currently on the katana, originally sold by SBG.

Edit: Per the the post below, I've had the sword for over a year-- no complaints regarding wear, and it's still sharp after *many* tatami/bottle cutting sessions.

Your review was rather helpful but you stated that you got your sword on March 8. This isn't a problem but it would be nice if someone who has owned one of the SBG swords for longer could say a word or two about the state of the sword and their feelings about it months later.

Akotlya-I have owned the entry level custom since-July-I think and am very pleased with it.It is tight, well constructed and still very sharp even after many cutting sessions.I have zero complaints about it and would recommend it to my friend easily for there 1st sword.I also have in my possesion a Torakami-I cannot sing its praises high enough. The SBG line-from my experiance is well worth a purchase from and I am going to be ordering a custom from the proline once my wallet recuperates!I hope this helps.D

The SBG brand is going to look different between the $330 customs and the "Professional" line - I have one of each and they are very different animals. The SBG custom I have was the first off the line, and has held up well. I don't push my swords very hard but I wouldn't hesitate to do some cutting with it. The fittings are tight, though they are "par" for the price range. You will find better fittings and better quality features on katanas for the same price or cheaper, so the value is in the customization options. As has been pointed out recently, though, for some people they customization option is NOT something that they place value in... so it's an "eye of the beholder" thing. Personally, my SBG custom is my favourite sword because it's personalized - even though I own, for example, a Hanwei katana that sells for more than double the price. I would recommend them to someone who wants a decent, personalized katana backed by unparalleled customer service. The SBG professional katana is a whole new ball game. The Kuramono I own is really something special, and comes from an entirely different forge that the custom. I haven't played with it much since I got it but it's a big jump in quality from fittings, handle wrap, the individually fitted tsuka and a number of other factors. I hope to spend more quality time with it this summer... but I consider it and the SBG custom to be two "sub brands" under the SBG name. If that makes sense.
