I know nothing about metallurgy, but the first thing that passed through my mind is ''oh, there's the unobtainium from that Avatar movie ... must be as serious as that film was subtle ...''. Take it as a joke, the most I know about metal is that the steel on my swords rust because of my fingerprints

the only thing I know about cobalt/tungsten alloys is that they have been experimenting with them for use a replacement from depleted uranium SABOT rounds in tanks but they are highly carcinogenic.

C&P to a Google search brings up the following page but may not be the only reference. David Boye and his dendritic steels go back near half a century now. Note that it is the embeded crystals in this newer metal mix that are that hard, not the blade itself. As the edges wear, the harder properties develop microserrations on their own. This is noted in other studies and steels. Cliff Stamp is another real character to read about in regard to edge retention, sharpness and other properties but at the end of the day, the question always remains "What are you going to use it for?" Novel and expensive? Betcha, fer sure. www.beautifulblades.com/products/show/1020Boye is really well worth any novice in blade study to do some research and reading about his work over the decades. HArdly shunned in the market, just less understood than many. Ther were some really nifty folders not that long ago, I'll admit to not following closely in the past decade. His cast unibody knives of the 1970s were modern miracles as it were and not quite as rare as hens teeth but if you come across any (three sizes back in the day) they are highly collectible and handy useful little knives. FWIW and I don't mean offense but not being clear in thread headers simply causes many to overlook them entirely, while making them near impossible to search for later. Just some thoughts

The Rockwell scale only goes up to 68 ( I believe, it stops somewhere in the late 60's) and that is Diamond hardness.
EDIT*** The only thing harder than diamond are corrugated diamond nanorods (which are made from diamonds) and are just a bit harder.

That would be because of the Cobalt. I had thought for a long time about mixing tungsten carbide crystals into a powder steel mix

sounds cool, looks cool, depends on the price I guess. personally I'm trying to get my hands on the infamous blue/green "Rearden metal"

Rockwell has several different scales to it depending on what type of tester is used. most commonly in the sword world we se rockwell C scale or HRC. looking at this chat you can see plainly that nitrided steels are indeed just off the top of the HRC scale that ends at 80 which would mean that 82 HRC is possible but, I think, untestable by the Rockwell system. diamond can be seen to be way off the top of the chart. for the entire article read here: www.calce.umd.edu/general/Facilities/Hardness_ad_.htm
