ok guys,, i took my mesuring tape and took a couple of pics, now i am posting them with the mesuring and tell me what i would be supposed to answer,, do i answer for profile those mesurements or do i have to calculate something and put only the answer there? lol you know i am new to euros and since explainations are in english i lose you all when it become so fancy as explainations lol at the guard 1 inches from the tip the one inche is at the right now distal, here is the pic, do i need to take mesurement of the thin of the blade? if yes tell me how because it is too thin

Marc,
To determine distal taper measurements you'd need a set of calipers. I personally don't think you need to go that far as the picture you showed us shows a pronounced distal taper and it's very evident.
Great pictures !

yeah , i tried to take the best pic to show both side of the blade but now i understand how to take that mesurement.
now,, what is the result numbers for the profile taper? lol

sorry Marc, these pictures and measurements don't tell me much. for profile taper I'd like a picture o the whole blade at once maybe with the yard/meter stick next to it as a straight edge reference. as for distal taper while there is certainly noticeable taper right there behind the point I'd like to know the thicknesses along the length of the blade and for that you'll need calipers. nothing looks out of place though. just not enough information. Marc take a look at my reviews of the Antioch and 1557 for the type of distal taper measurements I'd like to see if possible

Marc, your pics did a good job of demonstrating the profile taper, though a full profile picture can never hurt. A good way to measure the amount of distal taper is to take your caliper and measure the thickness at the hilt, and again 1 inch from the tip, just like with the profile taper.
1 7/8 " at the hilt, and roughly 1/2" near the tip.

ok and the result numbers are the same as that? 1 7/8 " at the hilt, and roughly 1/2" near the tip.
and i do the samw for distal taper, right?
so, if i want to do a good job would be good to guy a caliper

Maz, could a person measure the thickness of a fuller with those? If so how?

No Ric, You'd need outside groove calipers.
Unless you're very handy and make 2 clip on points. Measure them before attaching, take your measurement and subtract out the length of the points. It would probably be easier to take the outside measurements, then use a match or other thin piece of material to measure the depth of the fuller and subtract it from your outside measurement.
Outside Groove Calipers would be more accurate but any of the other ways would give you a reasonable figure.
Being that they are hand finished all of the blades will vary slightly anyway.

Thanks, Demon, some good ideas there. I think I'll get some calipers. Of course, I've been saying that for a couple years now. LOL

"Marc," something whispered.
Marc looked around. He wasn't sure what it was. He was busy, offering stellar deals, stellar customer service, like a Francophone elf, bringing happiness to SBG members and other folks who wanted to buy a trustworthy sword. Must be nothing, he said to himself. (Translated from the French.)
"Marc."
He heard it again. What could it be?
"Marc, it's the dark side calling."
He shook his head, quietly, to himself. Shouldn't have had that extra cup of coffee this morning, he thought. (Translated from the French.)
"Marc, it's the heritage of Roland, William the Bastard, D'Artagnan, and Etienne Gerard."
Marc decided to listen. "What do you want from me?"
"GO BUY SOME CALIPERS!" shrieked the voice of the dark side!
Sorry, Marc! You're going above and beyond here, and even if I never pick up a DF sword, I really appreciate these posts, and I hope you can overlook my literary license.

Hey Marc, I applaud you for going to the effort to address these queries regarding distal taper. I threw together this very crude graphic to illustrate some points. It shows a sword in profile and in distal view, then it shows what the distal taper could be if we magnified it about 20 times and compressed it along the length so as to view it as a short wedge. The white line down the center represents the sharp edge. Examples 1 and 2 represent very poor distal taper and result in the "sharpened crowbar" analogy. Examples 3 and 4 represent different degrees of convex distal taper. Examples 5 and 6 represent different types of concave distal taper. When you consider that any of these types of distal taper could be built into the same blade profile, you begin to see why two swords that may look identical in profile shots can handle and behave so radically differently.

Holly SH... thanks Mike,, i love that explaination now have to explain how that one is made? it is like none of those lol it is like number 4,, very very long(from center to the sharpen but very flat hahaha you'll have to make a number 7 kidding man, i'll look and will be able now to say how it is.
