For Midori: Oh its still very possible. I have purchased katana from abroad and here in the uk.
There was a period a few years ago where all curved blades above a certain length were banned outright unless you were a legally registered martial artist that warranted their use. The ban was lifted pretty quickly and "traditionally made" katana were legal again.
It isnt so much the cost of shipping from the us and canada but the extra costs that may be amounted from customs that put me off buying more.
Its a shame because we have very little choice here. There isn't a single seller in the uk that has their own line with a decent choice and fair prices.
I don't think that its necessarily because they dont want to but that we have a rather limited market. I live in one of the larger cities here and as far as i know the only JAS practised is kendo and that is just a single club.

Ahh I understand now. Yeah, customs isn't much fun anywhere. That's really all the JSA that's available in your area? For whatever reason, I thought it was marginally more popular than it seems to be.

Yeah just a single kendo club. Its better than nothing.
I was toying with the idea of doing a bulk order for uk members from a single US vendor but it seems that there isnt enough uk members to make it worth while. I dont even think kenpachi316(was that his name?) is still around.

Thank you for your reviews! They are informative and really a lot of fun to read.
You described this sword as looking sort of like a tired Kamakura era blade. I had a question: could you define what specific things make a sword look "tired?" I'm really curious about this.

Thank you very much, Aries!
The best way I can sum up 'tired' is that it's reminiscent of an old blade that has been shortened and polished quite a bit. The blade is thin with little niku. This is why I call them tired-looking.

No problem! Thank you for taking the time to answer my question. It's great to be able to read a detailed review and then get an answer to a question from the reviewer! What about the shinogi on this particular blade? I can't quite tell from the photos, but the shinogi looks a little softer or more rounded. Would this also be in keeping with a tired look? In some pictures of blades I see what looks like a very defined, "sharp" shinogi. Does the Shinogi on a "tired" blade tend to look more rounded than sharp, or does the polishing process typically preserve this? Hope I'm not a bother with all of the questions! I'm very curious about this model. I've wanted a Katana since I was a kid and am finally thinking about purchasing one. ;D

You're welcome! I'll always answer any question I can, and if I don't know the answer, I'll find it. The shinogi shape is preserved during a traditional polish, and even on tired blades is generally still crisp. The softer shinogi shape on this blade is really a result of the hit-and-miss polishing in China. Even some of the Hanwei blades feature softer shinogi lines. It's not a bother at all! Any question you may ask of me I'd be happy to answer. I hope when you do finally buy your sword, it's one that fits you well and that you really like!

Hello Kaiyo, We're not certain exactly what we'll be offering next, though there's a few design ideas we've been passing around the office. Time and our forge will be the two deciding factors. I too would like to see a nice shobu produced by our forge. Thanks for the interest! -MK of SnA

Hi MK!
Might a differentially hardened t10 ko-katana be in the works? I think as a companion piece to your superb t10 line of katanas, it would be freakin' awesome. I know I'd buy one... maybe two!

Oh, yeah, I forgot about the Nisshoku... a bit spendy for me though. Plus, their production run is limited to 4...
