I'm considering getting this sword from KOA because I'm intrigued with the style since recently getting into playing Prince of Persia. It's a little big for a knife and a little small for a sword, and it's stainless. I've heard the opinion that anything over a foot made out of stainless is too brittle to cut with so I'm not sure whether to try this out against some milk jugs or whatnot. What do you guys think? kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=HK203

I'm going to say "no." I wouldn't. The likelihood is that this ting has a miniscule rod poorly welded onto it which the rest then just slips over and screws on. Maybe some glue.
I'd stay away.

Random hits it squarely on the head.

The wide blade is part of the reason I say no. The idea of something that heavy being supported by something so fragile (most likely, that is) is far more reason to NOT cut with it, than anything else.
Tempered or not.

Modified my post, I completely ignored the tang issue.

They probably could tell me more. I'm thinking of going next week so I'd be able to see it before making the decision whether to buy it or not. I just wanted more than one opinion on it. It will probably just end up as a display piece if it get it, unless KOA can reassure me that it's sturdier than it appears.
Edit: I just did some digging around and found out Bud K makes this. Now I'm really skeptical!

I was skeptical as soon as I saw the $13 price tag, now that BudK is part of the equation I've know all I need to know.

No...I have one of these. Not only is the metal stainless steel, it is only case hardened. The tang is indeed rat tail and the fittings poorly glued on. It is EXTREMELY unsafe to cut with.

I agree with the rest, If you want to buy it because you like the look of it then by all means, but for heaven sake DO NOT try cutting anything with it. There are just too many 'red flags' with this thing. 440 Stainless, only $13 (cheap AND unlucky! ), and only the 1 picture which doesn't show much.

I had one as well, if this is what I think it is. Piece of junk, IMO. Not only not good to cut with, but it rattled around like crazy and didn't even look very nice. The wood was rather well polished and pretty cool, though. -Slayer

I would agree 100% with James, its stainless steal and is just too cheap,.
I would say if you like the look of it buy it as an ornament, but don’t expect to be able to do anything with it.

It would appear to have tang issues as indicated by others here, although I think people are a bit to paranoid of stainless stell in shorter blades. I find that stainless blades under 15 inches have no problems.

Yea, but stainless steel that's only been case-hardened? No way. On the plus side, it's a cool-looking design. Why not contact scorpion and get one custom made that's safe to use?-- traditionalarcherybows.com/

I think it will help answer this portion of your question: /index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=13126&page=1

Also, KoA typically says if they think an item is battle ready. Now, they consider some swords to be battle ready I wouldn't cut with, so if they don't even have it listed as battle ready, I wouldn't try cutting with it. You'd be likely to end up with a whirling helicopter of death.

I got one of those, but it's the better version Carbon steel, a nice slotted tang nut, I got it so long ago, I don't remember when. I sharpened it up, then laid it on my nightstand as a last-ditch weapon in case I didn't have time for something better. :oNever cut with it. I'll have to try it sometime
