Hello everyone! So I've been thinking of getting a real sword for a while now, and I recently found out I can't just go out and buy any sword. I've been doing some research on Deepeeka since the one sword I am interested in is by them, and what I'm reading doesn't sound too good. First of all, I plan on having the sword for display purposes mainly, perhaps in the future I decide to beat something up with it but it is mainly for display. The sword I am interested in is the following: kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=AH3246N&name=Crusader+Broad+Sword & by-the-sword.com/acatalog/Crusader_Sword_Cross_AH-3246-N.html KoA claims the sword is battle-ready, while BTS doesn't state anything. I e-mailed BTS and haven't gotten a reply yet. I did e-mail Deepeeka and in the reply they told me the sword is not battle-ready but it can be done on request, so I'm thinking the one in KoA is battle-ready and maybe that is why it is more expensive? I don't know. Anyway, I just wanted to know if anyone had purchased this sword and could tell me how it turned out. If not, would you guys recommend it for the price? Sorry for the lengthy message! Thanks in advance!

Deepeeka is generally known for its appalling quality, you should look into generation 2 something like the sword of the third crusade or the 12th century medieval. These are battle ready and well documented in reviews. Give deepeeka a miss or you might regret it.

I generally agree with the opinion Bloodwraith has put forth on Deepeeka. however that first sword looks better than their normal offerings and since you want it for display primarily this might, MIGHT be a decent buy. I doubt you will find something with a fancy scabard like that for this price. however Deepeeka is good at taking attractive pictures that don't always accurately represent their product. definitely be careful here and do heavy research. I would suggest talking personally to the place you plan to buy from and getting the opinion of someone who has handled the sword.
EDIT: hmmmmm I just wanted to add that I was just over at by-the-sword and they had a chat box pop up asking me if they could help me with anything and telling me that there was a live person on the other end of the chat. so I decided to tell them that I was looking at the second sword mentioned above and was wondering how that sword held up under close inspection. I told them that I had worries about Deepeeka's quality control based on reviews and web pictures. I asked if anyone there had actually looked at that sword in person and if so could they tell me if it was put together well, etc.
there was a LOOONG pause ( about 5 minutes) and then they responded with "is there anything else I can help you with?" I said "no, just that." then there was a loooooong pause. (close to 10 minutes) and they responded with "Thank YOU for choosing By-The-Sword, is there anything else I can help you with?"
I told them no and thanked them for being completely unhelpful.
I suspect there was not a real person on the other end of that chat as they claimed. if there was then, wow! how annoying.

It looks like the general feeling about Deepeeka is that they get picked last at every recess game. Probably everyone on the site has read Dan Sinclairs infamous review of the Charlemagne sword, (right here: www.sword-buyers-guide.com/cheap-battle-ready-swords.html . But I'm looking at Kult of Athena's site, and Deepeeka actually has a lot of stuff! Has anyone handled any of their other pieces, besides the crappy, fall-apart-after-one-cut Charlemagne? I'm curious if that one is just a lemon, or if the crappiness is across the board.

I've run into a few folks that had one and I've heard pretty much the same from them all. none so bad as Dan's experience but lots of problems. I can't say to much as I've never owned one.

Hello. If you like the appearance of this sword and want it mostly for display, then I think you should buy it. It's a bit more expensive from Kult Of Athena, although I think they'd be the same thing. I've ordered from K.O.A. 4 or 5 times and have only had one small problem. I've never seen or held this sword, although I'm guessing it'll be a bit heavy. That's Deepeeka, though. The scabbard is interesting either way, plus it has a free belt! Personally though, I'd order from Kult of Athena, since they take the time to actually photograph and measure most of their products. Most other sites to me just seem to be "out of touch", or something. Perhaps you could email KOA and ask about how it's assembled.?

Also remember that Kult of Athena does price matching, so you shouldn't pay more unless they got the item customized in some way.

i have handled several deepeeka swords. we have a dealer no to far away from me. they are all heavier than you would expect. i have not seen the one you want in his stock though. as for battle ready i dont know. depends on what type of battle you were going to fight. they claim they are ok for sca type usage though. hope this has helped terry

Who said that Deepeeka swords were okay for SCA combat?

jonathan. the reseller at the ren fair. only the pratical ones apparently. not that i would use or trust one myself. but then again i have other swords that i would not use in combat if it came to it. would only take one of the ones i have made myself if it came to that. i have seen a lot of "battle ready" swords that i would not use in a real battle if there ever was one terry

I've used a deepeeka longsword for live steel and it held up admirably. A friend of mine has a deepeeka saber that he trains with and apparently it performs well too, though I have seen several of their pieces that were completely awful so it would be safe to assume that they are fairly hit or miss when it comes to quality. I'd wait until I had a particular piece in hand before committing to buy it.

I just hope you've noticed that in those pictures on Kult of Athena that pommel is on really crooked. It might be worth the effort to keep looking for something similar by a different company.
