So I decided to buy one of these two blades since koa has them for a steal currently however I wanted to gather some people's thoughts on the two. I want a sword mainly for cutting and I know the longsword isn't exactly designed for this but chenessfan's longsword seems to do great, however I prefer the look of the bastard sword with fuller to the longsword but have heard some bad things about the edge on these. any advice or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

/index.cgi?board=euromedieval&action=display&thread=13861 We went a little off topic here but there are good information here. Including advice that before buying a sword you should research period clothing to go with the sword.

It will boil down to personal fighting style; if you prefer singlehand but on occasion think you'll bring both hands in for a more powerful blow, the bastard's the one for you. If you intend strictly longsword technique then that would be the obvious choice.
Whichever one you choose, it will still be a good sword.

So, Luka, did you ever get that period clothing?

I didn't, but I actually do plan to make a soft kit. I would like to make it universal as its main goal will be to serve for a viking group I'm starting and it would be nice if it could fit in a bit later period too.

Just as a side note, I don't think the bastard will cut better than the longsword, both are XVIII and even though they're not really cutting blades they cut very well. So for cutting both will do an similar job.

here's my opinion on the bastard sword: /index.cgi?board=swordreviews&action=display&thread=12316&page=1
shooter Mike's on the Longsword but keep in mind the edges come better than this now. maybe not great but better. /index.cgi?board=swordreviews&action=display&thread=7420&page=1
the Hanwei Tinker line of swords really handle well and once you get them sharp they are superb.
The Longsword is obviously better if you are into German or Italian Longsword techniques (and I can tell you Zwerchaus can be fun) I think you will have more cutting power with the longsword due to its extra size and weight. it will not be as fun with one hand but you COULD do some cuts one handed but not many and they wouldn't be a lot of fun most likely.
if you just want to cut stuff and have fun and want a sword that gives you options to go either one or two handed then the bastard is better. you will want to sharpen both of them but I think the Longsword will have the better edge. the bastard sword will need a little modification done to the throat of the scabbard so it doesn't dull itself on you.
