My wife has decided that, for my birthday, I get to choose a sword. I have about $400 bucks to spend. I'm seriously considering the Malatesta, but no news on when it's coming out yet. Then there's the practical line, and the Kriegschwert. Hanwei's mortuary hilts are gorgeous, but I think the grips are too small for my meathooks. There's soooo much at that mark, I'm not sure what to get! It's such a terrible plight. So I find myself seeking the advice of the finest folk I can imagine to help solve my dilemma. What advice do you fine folks have?

ok so when is your birthday? sounds like you want a Malatesta and who can blame you? I say get what you want the most and wait as long as you need to for it. I promise the waiting only feels like it will last forever.
talk to Sonny, he might have some good news. . .

I'd go for one of WSS's $175 H/T Vikings: 4th listing down: www.wiwingtiswordsupply.com/specialoftheweek.htmlThen I'd add $20 out of my own pocket and get a VA Practical Longsword from Sonny as well. ;D Two nice swords, a little over $400 spent. A very solid deal in my book...

Well, we don't have much to go off of, but it sounds like you're looking for a western sword. Anything more specific you're looking for?

Really, I'm looking for a Euro. Don't get me wrong, katana are nice, but I've fallen in love with the Euros since I found this forum. The Malatesta is amazing. I love the looks, the grip is beefy enough for my hands (by the prototype pictures), and like its Signature siblings, it comes equipped with the scabbard and belt. I'm feeling what Tom said, but I do want some other options just in case. And with KoA's site down, I'm in the dark as to the selection in my price range.
Tom: It's next week.
Odingaard: I checked out the H/T Viking, and I'm just not a fan. I tried to love it, but it's just....somehow ugly. Though, I think I'd love the VA Practical Long Sword in antique emerald.
What I'm looking for is something that handles well, recovers quickly, has a larger grip (as even my DSA Medieval Knight's pommel digs my palm during use regardless of the grip I've been using), and is aesthetically pleasing. I want something that's a good value for the money.

well if it's a longsword you want with longer grip take a look at what Sonny and his Custom Sword Shoppe have done with the H/T longswords and the upgrades they have installed on them. or a H/T Great Sword of War and have it modded by Sonny and the CSS. I bet they can do antique emerald. I'm really liking the GSoW lately with a little bit of cleaning up it would be fantastic. the Tinker sword are really good stuff but they want some touch-ups before they really hit the tip-top.
on that pommel dig, have you seen this:
it works, I promise.

I second the idea with the H/T longsword or GSoW. In my opinion the longsword is the best sub 300$ longsword available and with some tuning through the CSS it will be STUNNING. Hell, it's the best longsword until you reach ATrims and the other high end swords. For a longsword, you can't do better.

you mentioned the Hanwei mortuary hilts...nice swords, but if you have a craving for a really nice. top quality mortuary hilt then go with Armour Class. For a few dollars over your budget, Armour Class can MAKE you a sword you will love. The wait is a little long (22 to 24 weeks) but the result would be grand.
The Malatesta is a fine looking piece as well and Odingaards suggestion of acquiring 2 swords is good also.
cheers,
Bill
ps keep an eye out on the classified boards of here, myArmoury and SFI....always stuff floating aroundat that price range.

Tom: I saw the vid, and it helped, but I still get pommel dig to some degree. I definetly get less, but still some. BW: Any of the above. I'm starting to feel the bastard and two-handed.
I'm considering the Malatesta and running it through the CSS. I love it the way it is, though. And it has the same bladetype as the VA Practical, if I remember correctly. I want something I'm not going to have to sharpen out of the box, and Hanwei isn't going to be that, from what I understand.

Hanwei will not be cutting sharp out of the box unless you run it through the CSS, then it will be. Sonny's crew steps up the sharpness and polish on the H/T swords they work on.
on the video and the gripping, keep practicing, it will get easier. try slightly changing the position of your hand forward and back on the grip a little.

My hanwei came sharp. I still refined the edge to suit my standarts but it was certainly sharp enough for cutting.

Some people can cut tatami and bamboo with training blunts so sharp enough for cutting is pretty subjective based on the individual's ability level. it is also true that some Hanwei Tinker swords come sharper than others I'm just mentioning that the edge on the typical H/T sword is a bit less sharp than MOST people, especially new cutters, prefer.

I've cut bamboo and tatami with training blunts, it isn't that hard when you get the hang of it, it's all about technique and edge alignment . Why not go with one of the VA blades? I think you can even get signature line from wiwingti for your price range.
