Thanks to Marc from Wiwingti. The package arrive very quickly after I ordered it. It is a Musashi Shirakawa SS807BK. I'm a newb, so everything looks good to me These are my first impressions; I may try to write a review later. The box seemed light but was in good shape. For $80, I think this is a very nice sword. Fit is tight on everything. I like the simple fittings; they are understated and solidly made. Best of all is the hamon in the sunlight: This blade feel nice in the hand, and it begs to be swung. It cuts paper pretty well. I'm not a cutter (yet) so I can't comment on that. I also haven't checked the tsuka for cracks yet. I need to get some kind of punch. Overall I like this sword a lot and I can't put it down ;D I'd appreciate tips on anything else to check for besides the tsuka.

So, I can't get the tsuka off. It seems the fit is a little too good. I tried holding it with my strong hand and hitting my hand with the weak hand. Didn't work. Ideas?

Wrap a towl around the tsuba... and GENTLY tap it with a rubber mallet... that should losen it a bit so you can VERY CAREFULLY pull it off. Those Musashi katana are a great deal at that price... I've had a couple and was VERY pleased.

Dude, I'm excited for you. What a heck of a deal on that sword and it sure is a looker. First sword of many, no doubt, but the first one is special.

Great score! You should be a "happy little vegemite"! ;D Why do cats always have to sit on something new? Cheers Marc E

there are some videos on youtube showing good ways to get stuck tsuka off. just do a search. isn't there a sticky in the japanese sword board or somewhere around here with a tutorial?

The cat rocks. Period. The sword's cool, too, though. ;D I have an 808 Bamboo Warrior, and it's a great sword for the price. On note of caution, though; that will likely be the lightest real sword you ever hold in your life. The Takeo's are unbelievably light and well balanced, so don't be surprised if other swords have considerably more mass to them. Congrats on your new sword, man! We'd love a review... -Slayer

Thanks for your nice comments. Tom, I looked at a youtube vid where a guy uses a hammer and a block of wood. That worked and I got my tsuka off. NO CRACKS! Yeah!
