I thought that I would never improve, and it seems that I have. I think that part of my problem was fear. I was afraid to cut, in a way. Fear of damaging my sword acted as an obstacle. Once I relaxed and took a more casual approach, I was able to make better cuts. This doesn't mean that I am good now, but if I can get better (if you watch any of my videos you will know how bad I am) then you can. The one thing you can't do is give up. You have heard it many times before, but it really is true.

WSW,
what sword did you get?
I'm sorry to hear about the loss of some of your motor skills but that being the case you should definitely practicewith a blunt before you do anything with a sharp. single handed swords and European straight bladed swords are different then katana and act quite differently but they have no less ability to cut.
even if you have lowered motor skills you can still cut just learn to relax and let the sword do the work. the cut should start from your body just by a step or a turn and you should feel it travel through you and out your arm to your sword. have you ever watched a wave move through a rope? it's the same thing but your body starts the wave in your body instead of in the rope. that make sense.
but please practice blunt first or you could hurt yourself.
of sword toughness here's the thing: swords that are full tang and hardened and tempered steel are going to be TOUGH. that is the nature of the material. the fittings and hilt are more likely to fail than the blade. there are swords that are tougher than others but the difference is small enough not be very important to a typical sword owner. even one with bad technique.
no sword will last forever no matter how good your technique

WSW, look at cole...he also has very limited mobility and he is quite good. I have a bad knee, bad hip, bad spine, bad lung...well bad body pretty much. I learn and get better. You may have to alter techniques that a normal person would use...I have to, and cole definitely has too...but the key is you can learn.
As for a gladius...umm yeah, that´s kind of a stabby weapon...not so much a slicer. You can cut, but it will be kinda hard.
Also Tom is giving good advice.

you should be able to cut light targets with a Gladius. Gen2 at least the edge should be good, they have a good reputation for that. anyway practice safe and blunt and build up slowly so you know what is going to happen before you do it. we don't want a "half-calf WSW" if you get my drift.
drop us a video and maybe we can help you with technique, it's hard to know what is going wrong without seeing it. good luck, cut safe and have fun.

WSW,
toughness isn’t everything, what’s more important is the reason for the toughness. If you were to compare an Albion to one of the older Dark sword armoury swords, both are fairly tough but the DSA sword will weigh considerably more then the Albion, suggesting that it gets its toughness from having extra steal where the Albion is well designed and tempered. The Albion will handling far better and will be far superior.
Cutting with a euro sword is not that easy. Some of the guys on here make it look easy. If you watch one of Shootermikes or Toms videos you may be fooled in to thinking that cutting with a euro sword is easy. The first time I cut with a single handed euro sword, I batted the bottle I was cutting, across the garden repeatedly, and eventually cut it on my 5th or 6th attempt. It took me a long time to develop a good enough technique.
I think it is difficult to just watch a video and understand what good cutting technique is. Its something that you have just got to develop a feel for.
As for your disability, I think that you will have to develop a technique that suits you. just keep practising, the more you cut the better you will become.

I second the "post some cutting video's", I have learned so much from the people on this forum because they were able to "see" what I was doing wrong. Who knew a sword wasn't a "baseball bat"! ;D And as far as Cole goes, I really hope one day I cut as well as he does!

you got that right Sparky, that cut right there was as good as anything Ricwilly or Shooter Mike have done on water bottles. Cole has it going on.

Watching Cole handle his swords inspires and impresses me. He's come so far since he started that it makes me want to practice more. Heckuva job, young man.

Don't let disability slow you down, if I did that I'd never do anything. People keep telling me what I can and can't do and a prisoner in my own body, but I keep proving them and it wrong.
