I'll be honest guys... I'm running out of ideas.
I've been doing Collector's Corner for about a year and a half now, if you can believe it, and I'm losing the feeling in my funny bone. This last month's one was probably the hardest to get out, though in my defense I was taking supersized amounts of narcotics for my wisdom tooth issues (the less said about that, the better) so I guess I'm just lucky it was in english.
So I'm just looking for some feedback here. What should I change? What would you like to see more of? Or should I hang up my pen (or word processor) and stop doing Collector's Corner? Ideas for future topics would be most welcome.

I voted for more 'slice of life' type stuff... You could do an interviwe/expose' on different collectors (SBG members or not, does not really matter) get lots of pics from them, ask them questions, really make it a get to know a collector sort of thing. Best thing about it is, you could do it with anyone... you don't have to physicaly be there. You could interviwe people via chat, phone, even PM... you could get pics from them... it would be kinda cool. Although I also lov reviews of bad sword movies... ;D Reviews of good sword movies are cool as well... but they are harder to come by, sadly.

Although I voted "More "slice of life" looks at sword collectors" I wouldn't mind seeing some Horrible Movie Reviews. ;D

collectors corner??? ummmmm.....we have a collectors corner? We DO have a 'Members Collection' section where SBG members post their sword collections... but the Collectors Corner Dan is talking about is a segment that he writes for the SBG Digest newsletter which comes out once a month, or is it every two months? I can't recall.

I second the Slice of Life thing with the collector interviews. I think there's some guys out there we'd love to hear from and about.

I jumped on the bandwagon and also voted for more slice of life looks at collectors. As someone who's still new to this I'm fascinated by why other people collect, how they choose which swords to buy, even mundane things like how they display them and how their families feel about a house full of swords. If you're really feeling in need of some rest you could also try having a guest columnist once in awhile. Maybe let someone sound off on an issue (that isn't too controversial) that's sword related and near and dear to them or possibly have someone do a "How To" on something they're particularly familiar with.

slice of life stuff is good. there's also been a lot of talk recently of custom makers that do work at or close to our budget and I'm sure lots of people missed the discussion so an article that talks about what to expect to pay for that custom blade would be a great series of articles. you could start with John Lundemo and move right through the lists and see what if anything a certain custom maker could/would make at or near our price range and what he/she can make at the top of his/her price range, what that might look like and what it might cost. also interviewing them as to what their vision is and how they got started and what drives them is all welcome. of course you'd have to make a disclaimer that any sort of "project" you would talk to the smith about would be hypathetical and orders for exact copies of that hypathetical project will not be accepted since they are NOT production forges/manufacturers.
I for one would love to see some interviews and articles exploring the possibilities of the custom market. it's something I'm definitely interested in but have been afraid to dig into too deeply since I wouldn't want to talk to a smith about this project I'd love, get it all figured out and then have to say "sorry, I just cannot afford that" I think the custom smiths would see more comissions come in from us if we had some idea of what sort of pricing to expect. nothing too specific of course since we don't want price wars to start but I think it could be done tactfully. maybe even stay away from hard numbers and use terms like "his more simple work tends to run a little less than twice our standard budget." or even set up a price range chart like: <$500 = Budget >$500 - <$1000 mid range >$1000 - <$5000 = high end >$5000 = ultra high end
for instance if I know that a maker's better work hits solidly in the high end and if I figure my drop-dead max $2500 (in case my wife is reading this is purely hypathetical - in other words don't kill me baby!) then I would know that I could probably afford to get some work done by him for a special occasion. but if I know my drop dead max price is $500 I had better look for makers that will do budget ranged work. just a thought.

Thanks for the feedback guys. It sounds like you're hoping for a transition away from the humorous format to more interviews and interactions with collectors? Or should I still keep the humor and do movie reviews every now and then?

This world's sad enough as it is; I like humor. Nothing wrong, however, with expanding the sphere: more movie reviews, interviews, etc.

Thanks for the feedback guys. It sounds like you're hoping for a transition away from the humorous format to more interviews and interactions with collectors? Or should I still keep the humor and do movie reviews every now and then? Definitely mix it up: movie reviews, slice of life, humor, serious interactions with collectors and/or forges and vendors, and so on. I say use all of the ideas you mentioned, plus: -Bios of people in "sword movies", -Interviews with weapons smiths, -Interviews with schools, teachers, etc., . . . and so on. I like seeing varied content. --Edward

Or should I still keep the humor and do movie reviews every now and then? Keep the humor as much as possible. I've had quite the varied career and I've written comedy, I know what a drain it can be to be expected to be funny so (at least from my perspective) I don't "expect" funny, it's just a delightful surprise when it pops up. I think, from an outsider looking in, you're worrying too much. You're doing a great job as is and I think we can all trust you to make changes that will keep us interested and entertained.

I like when you mix it up too Dan, if it was the same all the time it would be boring. Keep up the good work man!

Dan,keep the humour but I also have voted for the slice of life-it appeals to my voyeristic side-LOL-but I enjoy the terrible sword reviews-where a sense of humour is sometimes most needed and most apreciated.Your doing a great job and a much appreciated service for us all.I for one applaud your worthy efforts.
