So same and same don't mean the same thing even though they're spelled the same, though they aren't pronounced the same, and same means the same as samegawa which is the same as same kawa. But that's pretty much the same thing that everyone else as said about same and same. "Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo" That is, Bison hailing from Buffalo, that other Bison from buffalo intimidate, also happen to intimidate Bison from Buffalo. ;D ;D Yes, I was thinking of mentioning that a sentence made of the word "buffalo" repeated any number of times is grammatically correct, but for some reason didn't. +1 for adding it though. Of course, we're just taking this way off topic.

"Same" is referring to "Samegawa" - which (i think translates directly as) "Skin of the giant ray". Its usually the belly skin of stingrays that is found between the actual wooden core & the outer wrap of the handle. Isn't the skin from the back and not the belly?

I tried being a vegetarian for 8 months once when I was about 19... and recently I've been giving it serious thought. I like to cook, mostly over open flame... and I like meat. I don't think eating meat makes me a bad person... when a wolf kills and eats a rabbit, its not evil... its just nature. However... what IS evil and NOT natural is the way animals are kept and treated in todays world. It disgusts me... and by buying and eating meat I'm more or less condoning that... and I have trouble accepting that.

I cannot find supporting friends and family who can help me become a vegetarian... Although I also need to explore more vegetables in order to find even more meat replacements. (flavor wise).

What was it Brenno was saying? Something about not hi-jacking the thread? ;D lol Seriously, though, I pretty much agree with Sean. Meat = fine. Animal cruelty = NOT fine. -Slayer

I'll probably have to apologize, it all started because I was trying to get Brenno's (you'll always be Brenno to me) opinion on using same on his swords, or if he (or anyone, for that matter) knew of a similar material for function AND aesthetics. Then somebody went off on a tangent and here we all are.

Beefetarean?
...I wonder what the samegawa would be like if one of the "continuous star" (or whatever they're called) skins was used...

i was always taught from young age that animals are on this earth to serve our needs, be it food or fashion.or target practice. Personally, I find that view somewhat arrogant. As I said... I find no fault with eating flesh... animals eat other animals... its all just part of life. Hunters who kill, clean, and eat the animals they hunt are, to me, doing nothing wrong. However... people who hunt for sport... that confuses and, to be honest, disgusts me somewhat. Even more disgusting is how animals are kept and treated in the worldwide meat industries. The amount of cruelty and waste involved in the meat industry is truly disturbing to me... and people that we would consider 'primitive' tend to handle this issue in a way much more enlightened in my view... they use EVERY bit of an animal they kill for something, many even honor the animals who's lives they take to survive in a fashion I consider very noble and honorable. We 'civilized' people keep thousands of animals in small boxes with no room to move, inject them with drugs, and slaughter them in front of their caged fellows and don't make use of huge parts of the dead animals making huge amounts of waste. Nothing, in my eyes, is put on this earth to 'serve' anything else... everything is connected and interdependnt... and while I don't believe its wrong for humans to eat other animals and use them for clothing... target practice?!? Really? I know people who shoot ground hogs and other 'pests' for target practice... but then do nothing with the dead animal, just leave it there... they shoot them for the fun of it. I find that evil... just straight up evil. Killing an animal to survive is just part of nature... killing one for fun is something else... something very dark in my view. Sorry to go off on a rant here...

The only difference between humans and other animals is that we are cursed with a brain we have no hope of fully understanding or controlling. (most don't even try)
Exploiting animals for "fun" is no different from exploiting other people... Just more pathetic. At least the people have a fighting chance.
Not here to change anyones views, I know that wont happen. Just sayin'

I call troll.
Itigar I know you like to play devils advocate, Ive watched you for long enough. But we discussed this crap at length a month or two ago, and you know how a good many of us feel about our animals. I started a new thread to dehijack this one, but you go and open a can of worms like that, knowing that it's gonna get the back up on a bunch of us. I'm not going to discuss it, as I said my piece on Taryn's hunting thread. Just cut it out bro.

Dominion over this Earth means that we look after and protect, not do something as disgusting as use an animal for target practice or cage them inhumanely. In some cases animals are far more worthy than humanity, better than humans. We have no right to kill them just because they are there.

I tried going the all-veg route, but it didn't agree with me. Or my sensibilities. I applaud those who believe strongly enough to remove whatever it is they feel is detrimental to their life, be it food, outside influences, whatever. It isn't for me, not eating meat.

Killing an animal to survive is just part of nature... killing one for fun is something else... something very dark in my view. I don't want to feed the Itigar troll, but I would like to clarify for posterity the that I do see different cases in shadowhowler's post. - A hunter who kills for survival
- A hunter who kills for sport, but utilizes the prey for food, clothing, etc.
- Those who kill out of sadism
- Those who kill or harm animals through inhumane treatment for gain
Just wanted to toss my hat in. The first two are understandable and justifiable. The second two types should be strung up and/or shot. What my family calls "sport hunting" (when done properly) is a humane culling of the population in order to preserve balance in an ecosystem. I also feel I should clarify, not everyone hunts for survival and eats what he kills. A Javelina is a feral hog that is worthless and smelly, sometimes to the point that their meat is toxic if eaten. They also present a very real threat to the ecosystem and to personal safety. An Armadillo isn't worth eating either and so many are rabid we don't take the chance. We kill them as vermin (in Texas it's counted as pest extermination, not sport hunting) and burn the carcasses, but do not use any parts from them. now see? I went and fed the troll in a need to defend myself. dangit.
