well so much for KOA matching any price. I guess that's one disadvantage of stocking ahead of time. I must say I'm a little dissapointed in KOA, I thought they would match.

Since the wholesale cost on either of these models is around $180.00; I'd not hold anything against KoA. Besides, most places that do price matching will not match closeout/promotional prices. I have bought quite a few swords in the last month, so if I don't like the CS basket hilt; I'll put it up in the classifieds at my cost plus shipping. There might be a glimmer of hope yet for those who did not get one that really want one. I think mine is supposed to arrive Tuesday; I got the tracking info somewhere here.

I'm a little confused by your post Thana, I'm pretty sure I remember that he did pick the basket hilt and your statement seems to self contradictory, unless you meant to say "Did not Chieftan Robert Roy . . ."
and yes, I believe it is still called a claymore.

I got mine today, and I am pretty happy with it. I even like the way only the last half of the blade is sharpened. I used Loctite and vice-grips and was able to crank down the pommel nut to thread more of the tang in. The thing is solid as a rock with no play or rattle at all, rings like a church bell when striking a target. I slapped it into a baldric and will put it through the paces sometime during the next week.
For under $100, this was a pretty damn good deal. ;D

take it all apart. the nut on top of the pommel comes off pretty easy then there's nut snugged up to the bottom of the grip. then you should be able to smack the basket and grip until they slide off the tang (this may be difficult as they can be pretty tight) I'm guessing you will find the hole passing through the basket for the blade/tang is a little wider than it should be. go to the Japanese sword forum and look up the stickied thread on how to cure lateral tsuba play. same basic thing should work for the basket.
not sure if this is the right answer for your problem but until you get the basket off and can see/post pictures it will be just guess work as to what is causing the problem in the first place. my #1 suspician is the too wide hole in the basket for the tang.
good luck, let us know.

Tom K,
i took apart the handle all the way down to the tang as suggested. it was not wider as we both sspected. however, putting the handle back together i made sure to make everything nice and tight, and this in turn solved the problem. the second nut below the handle was not tight. after tightening it, the baskethilt was nice and solid.
i appreciate your help very much. thanks
