Hello all. First post here. Been lurking for a little while. I'm brand new to swords and I'm wanting to buy my first one. The one Ive been looking at is the Bushido Musashi Iaito sword. www.trueswords.com/bushido-musashi-unsharpened-iaito-training-katana-sword-p-4991.htmlWas wondering if anyone has been able to take a look at one of these yet. From what I understand Musashi make great swords for under $100. I've been practicing with a bokken and want to try something that feels more like the real thing. This seems like it would be a good purchase for someone who is beginning and doesn't want to slice some fingers off. ;D

Welcome! I'm not much for Japanese swords, so I'm afraid I can't help you there. Here is a list of all the reviews we have on the forums, there are a good bit for Musashi swords, though none for the one you mention, but it could give you a general idea about how their swords are.

Irashaimase! Yokoso! and Welcome Blackmesa, we're glad to have you here. indeed Musashi makes pretty good stuff for the $100 range. if that's your budget they are who you want to go to. they won't be perfect but you got a better chance at getting a good sword from them than anyone else in that price range.
so we are talking an Iaito or a blunt training katana? my friend I think I love you. I wish more people would train blunt before they grab a sharp and start swinging it aroung. I trained with blunt rattan sticks for years (and I mean YEARS) before I fisrt picked up a sharp live steel sword and I still managed to cut myself a few times.
my personal Iaito is a Masahiro Horseman Katana that I won in a contest and blunted. when it was in production they often charged $150-ish for it and while it isn't bad for a super budget sword it is no where near as good as all the musashi swords I've seen, although I've only seen 3 or 4.
good luck, let us know how it goes.

Thanks guys!! That link to the reviews was a real help. Looks like this will be $50 well spent.
Tom K, i have no intention at all of touching a live blade till I have the basics down. As far as I'm concerned a live blade is something to be respected and not be used dangerously. I'm pretty much approaching this like I did/do all my firearms. I recently finished an AR15 build project that I did months of research on before I ever bought a part. Then when it was built I didn't take it out and fire it till I learned all the ins and outs of the weapon. How to clear double feeds, jams, etc. You need to get to know a weapon first before you utilize it safely. That's just my thoughts on it. ;D

Right; who doesn't? He's just a standup guy; I appreciate that, myself.
By the way, welcome, blackmesa.

Welcome and congrats on the new sword! As Avery said, gun oil should do fine. I use it on my blades and it keeps pretty well, and I don't have to recoat them often. You may also look into the silicon coated gun rags. The gunshop where I shop gives them out with each gun purchase and they've worked pretty well on my CZ-70 thus far, keeping it from rusting. I haven't tried it on my swords, but I've heard of other forumites using silicon based products to protect their blades. At any rate, enjoy your new sword and may it serve you faithfully for many years.

Yea, the one I used to use I can't even remember but it lasted a while and did the job well. I use Flitz now, two, three times a year maybe?

Do you just spray it on then wipe it off? Or apply it with a rag?

I spray it directly onto the sword and use the same cotton cloth to wipe it off as I always do so that it continues to get and stay saturated. Sometimes I'll do a quick wipedown just to be doing it, you know?
