So I have a blunt. It has a 37inch blade, 10 inch handle and a POB ~ 5 inches out. I am looking for a sharp with similar portions, which is affordable. In the ~$300 range. Options I am looking at include: VA practical, Handle is a touch short, but the blade length is nice and I have heard nice things about the sword. It is also very inexpensive. Tinker Pearce Longsword. Closer overall, but much lighter than my blunt. It is also toward the expensive end of things after shipping to Canada. Darksword's www.darksword-armory.com/1339.html . Very very close in dimension to my blunt and cheap/free shipping to Canada with no border issues. But there is very limited information on it. Anyone have any other suggestions or recommendation?

Someone who knows more than me will be along to give better advice but off the top of my head I would say that since Darksword has the reputation for their swords being very heavy if you like the weight of the VA Practical I'd strongly suggest going with it. Just two cents from a newbie who has no business giving advice but wants to help if he can.

I think the VA's good, I like mine quite a bit. I'm thinking I'll get the H/T before long. I've heard good things about it. Only thing is, besides the extra expence, it has a reputation for not coming sharp enough. Not an issue for me as I can sharpen it myself easily enough but for the less experienced sharpener that can be a pain in the ass.

The H/T longsword is popular, the VA gets raves but i'm wondering. You talked about the expense of shipping to Canada. Wiwingti is out in your area, has a great reputation. Might be worth looking into. Border costs can be a pain.

Wiwingti is on the list of places to inquire with if I go for the VA or H/T. I believe they ship from the US so probably no difference, but I wont know that until I ask.
They do however, have a smoking deal on GSOW, which is potentially interesting.

I have not dealt with him but I am under the impression that for Canada his prices are the best. There is also Reliks out in London. They ship from Canada. Not trying to sell you on anything, it's just that I'm here in Toronto and have bought a LOT of swords on line,...In any case hope you enjoy whatever you decide on. Happy cutting!

I have dealt with Wiwingti EXTENSIVELY and I am so happy with him I will buy my swords from him before anyone else. he price matches so you don't have to worry about if he is the lowest but in 90% of all cases it is other venders reducing price to meet him (Marc) and he will fight for you if there is a problem. so there's no worries if you get a messed up sword from the manufacturers he will fix it.
as for which sword, I understand your hesitancy for both the VA and the Hanwei Tinker your reasons make sense. unfortuneatly those are our go-to swords because they really are better than anything else in our price range. I would suggest taking a look at Genreation 2 swords maybe a Black Prince I hear good things about those and they will be a bit heavier than the H/T there's a smashing good review on one Paul Southren did on the main site so take a look at Gen2 stuff. they come with good edges so you won't have to worry about sharpening a blunt, move better than DSA as I understand it, are very very tough and have peened on hilts I believe. maybe one of theirs will fit you.

Ha! It isn't just Canada, his prices are the best period, that I have encountered and I have to say that he is a stand up guy who will bend over backwards for you. I live in Australia and I have so much respect for Marc that I would happily deal with him before anyone else if I ever wanted anything from him. Marc is becoming the godfather of swords.

If you're in Canada, I'd go with Marc @ Wiwingti; if he doesn't have it, he can probably get it for you.

Marc/ Wiwingti is great. If all else fail, go with Kult of Athena. I bought a lot of stuff from them and never had a problem getting them in Canada(Toronto).

Another good source is Sword Nation. They also will price match.

LOL @ Tom tellin everyone else to calm down AFTER he put forth AoV as a possible merchant.
JimC, I just saw a new sword that DSA is doing; the Black Prince. Measures out to 45", 32" blade, 8" handle, weighs in at 3lbs 13oz according to him...might be what you're looking for.
Truth be told, your best option would be to get a matched set such as what VA or H/T are offering- weight and dimensions matched (excepting the edge which is understandably thick on the blunt). Just a thought.

At the weight/length of his blunt, I think the Hanwei/Tinker GSoW is his best bet. Similar weight, 9" grip, 36" blade, fairly inexpensive (I think Wiwingti is having a sale on it right now, 230-something USD), and from the latest review, a good edge.

And obviously seeing all you guys throwing out props to your favorite sword dealers, wanted to jump in and let you know that AoV will match any price offered by any other dealer. Thanks for throwing the AoV link into the mix Tom.
Most of all though wanted throw in my 2 cents.
I have been very happy with the VA swords. The only thing an old history buff/re-enactor like me can say on the negative side is the machined look of the pommel and guard bothers me. Other than that they are flawless as cutters. If it is too plan for your tastes you can always customize the grip. For cutting and the price you can't beat it.
I a also like the Gen 2 black prince, but with the tapered blade may not be the cutting long sword you are looking for. The dimensions fit
Blade length: 33 1/4" Handle/Hilt length: 10" Overall: 43 1/4" Balance Point: 2 1/2" Below Hilt Weight: 3 lbs. 6 oz.
but the balance point is off by a few inches.
