Okay, so I'm beginning to feel more than a little obsessed with getting this done. Here is the shoulder protection. I really like the way they add to the overall look of the suit. One piece closer to completion. Thanks for looking. Troy/Shoboshi

That looks AWESOME!!!! Holy crap, you're very skilled with leather, that's for sure. How thick is that leather? It looks like you didn't harden it. What will you use the armor for? SCA? I think it's too pretty to me worn in battle. Even in battle with rattan swords.

Gardhusar-- Thanks man. It's pretty difficult to put a value on it because the real investment is in time and labor, not materials so much. In materials I've got close to $300. Once I get the entire suit done, I think I'd value it somewhere around $1000-1200. You can get a metal one for around that, so I don't see a lot of retail promise in this. But it will be a nice display piece and Halloween costume.
Cheness-- Thank you very much sir. The chest piece is around 7oz and the shoulders 9oz. Helmet and face piece are 4oz. Nope, didn't harden it. The only thing I will be using it for is to protect me from Zombies! Barring that, a display piece and costume for Halloween. Since it's not hardened at all, it's not up to snuff for combat or SCA.

As I said in the other thread, your work is absolutely stunning.
I don’t know what the retail value is of a suit like this, but I would say that something that is handmade, with this much intricacy, and the clear care and dedication put in to it, should be worth far more then $1000-1200.
Keep us updated, I really want to see the completed armour in all its glory.

King-- Thanks a lot. Yes, there is certainly a lot of work in all this for sure. I guess the value is sorta subjective. If I was to sell something like this I think I would have a hard time asking much more than that. Even at that price range, thats a lot of damn money! I'm not saying I don't think its worth it, just that it would be difficult to move. Maybe I'm wrong. And maybe at some point I'll get the chance to find out.
Slack--Thanks again. It has become an obsession and posting to hear the communities responses is part of it. Don't want to seem like I'm just trying to get a bunch of attention, but lets face it, I've worked hard on this, this is the only place I can go to share it and get feedback, and it's nice to hear that other people think it is a worthwhile project.
Thanks again guys. I will keep you updated. Should have the finale before Christmas if all goes well.

I'm getting to really like the "falling leaf" design. It has a very zen feel to it. Now get back to work so we can see it finished!!! LOL

How much harder would it have been to make it water-hardened?

Grey-- Hehe. Thanks a bunch friend! I've been taking a bit of time off to get caught up on some other things because if I don't, then I'll need this armor to protect me from the little missus. I'll be back at it soon.
Lunaman-- Thank you very much! All support and beneficial criticsm is most welcome.
Ebon-- As far as hardening goes, I think due to the tooling, it would not be possible. If there was no design on it, sure. Water hardening would for certain ruin the tooling and I strongly suspect that wax hardening would also.
I think if I was ever to make something to withstand potential combat with 'real' swords I would do a lamination of two leather pieces with metal sandwiched between them. Short of working in metal instead of leather, I think that's the only way 'I' could accomplish it and still have the nice look I'm going for with this.
Thanks guys.

No. Wax hardening will Not harm your tooling. And some wax hardening will allow you to play with it in the SCA. Water hardening Will, however, ruin your tooling unless you can manage the skill-level necessary to avoid doing so.

I will admit that I have not tried it Taran. But given the fact that it thickens the leather, I do suspect it would affect the tooling. Perhaps someone with the skill level could water harden this without damaging the tooling, but that's not me.
The long and short of it is that this armor has no need to be hardened and I have no intention of trying to do so.

Yes, that's water-hardening. Not wax hardening. Wax hardening will not thicken the leather, if done correctly. It will just infuse wax throughout it.
But, as you say, it doesn't matter, since you have no intention of using it for anything it would need to be hardened for. Still, it'd be pretty awesome on the field at Pennsic...

laminated leather over metal would be a good option, don't think you'd really need two layers of leather top and bottom just on the top for looks and some shock absobtion but there's no need for that with your planed usage.
I don't think I've mentioned it yet but you have done one hell of a pretty job with the tooling. color me impressed.

It wouldn't be terribly effective against zombies, too much in the way of open flesh, I love it though, you should try your hand at llamelar armour.

Tom-- Thanks a bunch friend. When I began thinking about ways to make this armor more 'real', a leather/metal sandwich is just what came to mind. I've never done anything like this before and this project really began with: can I do this? How would you secure the leather facing to the metal so that the edges wouldn't pull up?
Blood--And thank you too. Yes, of course you are correct. Way too many openings for real zombie conflicts. But the name sounded cool. Pretty slim chance of WWZ anyway. Just something the adventurous little kid in me likes to contemplate now and then. For real zombie action I'd do something out of heavy plastic and much closer fitting without so many gaps and things to grab onto. Something much more european. I will admit to being unclear on llamelar armor.
Thanks again fellas. Be safe.
