I'll begin this thread with a sword from the original crazy sword comedy manga, Rurouni Kenshin. Not Kenshin's sakabato (there's already too many of those on the market), but rather the sword of Makoto Shishio, the Mugenjin. Mugenjin is a traditional katana designed to maintain its sharpness. Many katana will chip and break at certain points with repeated use, however the Mugenjin was methodically chipped so that it wouldn't lose its edge or crack. The end result is a traditional katana with a minute saw like edge (the comic implies that you need to see the edge up close to see the serrated saw like edge). My understanding of traditional katana tells me that this sword couldn't be made. Because of the hard edge of traditionally made katana, chipping the edge from the beginning would likely crack the blade and make it useless. However, if you were to make this sword more like a beater, that is, modern steel and not treated like a traditional katana, it may be possible to bring the sword into existence but leave its functionality questionable. The ever minutely serrated edge to the sword interests me. The fact that you'd need to bring the blade close up to actually see it makes me wonder if it could possible be made for a traditional katana. With a beater and a lot of time and detail you might be able to make it but I doubt it could be mass produced easily. If I was more text savvy I'd upload a picture of the blade from the comic but I don't know how to do that on this forum. If anyone can explain this sword concept more clearly than me please do. With all this said and done for the first entry into this thread I hope I have set the mood. Any interesting sword you've seen from an anime or read in a manga that you'd like to debate whether or not it could be made or even functional please talk about it here and help this new thread grow. Hope everyone (or at least the anime/manga demographic) will enjoy this thread. I have wondered for a while what would happen if you made a sword with powdered steel technology, and added stellite to the mix. Correct me if I am wrong, but stellite is the hardest metal in existence, but it is too brittle to make a blade of it. The stellite particles would wear more slowly than the other metal in normal use, giving a fine irregular sawtooth edge, and would chip from hard impact, giving the sharp chipped edges like flint and obsidian knapped knives have. Am I on to something here BTW, the sharpest edges I have ever seen were broken pieces of a TV picture tube. Some of those edges went to near invisible, and looked like they would be many times sharper than anything metal And don't ever break a TV picture tube unless you know the proper procedure, you could end up dead, or wishing you were with thousands of pieces of glass in you from 6 inches down to near microscopic Something like this? Seems someone decided to actually make this sword found at www.trueswords.com/serrated-katana-samurai-sword-leather-wrapped-handle-p-5291.html

Could always go with the actual obsidian sword Now those are sharp blades!

Have to remember that obsidian is just volcanic glass though. That said it seperates on the molecular level so it may be on the fragile side but I dont know of many things sharper. I've cut myself with it enough to know it slices better than a razor blade.

They are very sharp yes. The main problem with those weapons, they were intended for very soft targets. Flesh, cloth and wood at best. The best kind of armor they'd encounter would be wooden shields, or hide/leather shields/armor and maybe bone. These are all substances that may be able to stop an obsidian spear, dagger or Axe but these materials are 'flexible' enough to absorb the momentum.
Against steel though, the glass just shatters. A good side hit from a steel sword of shield and it would break. The Aztecs had no answer to steel or shot. What they did realize though is the speed potential of horses and employed a guerrilla style of warfare where they constructed temporary bridges, attack, retreat over the bridge and demolish it. The horses couldn't cross and needed to wait fro engineers to make a bridge, effectively nullifying their speed and pursuit advantage.

Thus if you hit a target with it like this, wouldn't it be MORE surface area going through the target and thus receive more friction? Its a nice try but the serration only adds more surface area and for a cutting weapon (cutting as in slashing, not sawing) less surface area means less friction and a cleaner, easier cut.

Assuming that is really sharp, I think I would prefer to be cut with a normal edge to that.much as i prefer getting cut with a regular knife over a serrated steakknife. "Cleaner easier cut" doesnt always equal "best thing with which to mangle someone"

Plain edge = cut
Serrated edge = ripped to shreds

My point exactly. Unless I am mistaken, the point of serrations is to drag more surface area of the blade through the target and thus do more damage?

I would own one of these, minus the dagger in saya; Love the sai crossguard look, it just looks like a classy functional sword.

Well, beleive it or not, I accidentally stumbled upon this video of a fully functional sword from Bleach- Zabimaru! Functional as in how we wouldn't call it an SLO. It has to be suitable for actual combat. That plastic thing wouldn't cut one hollow eeeeh...tatami. ö.ö

It would be slightly better as a prop if he didn't have to pull a string to reset it. He should look into springs.
Chain swords have always made me laugh. Always. Though, if I may cite an anime that I do wish one could bring weapons from, it would be Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha; specifically I am talking about this scene:
Mmmm....Fate...
...er
Right, so. Anime weapons. Hilarious stuff, eh?

I love this series. I'd post the whole fight, but it'd be the full episode.
Anyhow, this series has everything a girl want: swords, creepy characters, backstabbing and killer zombies. If you get to see the entire series, the sword designs are pretty cool.
enjoy

I thought about watching that one once upon a time, but it never really grabbed me in a way that made me actually sit down and do so. That clip was pretty well animated, but wow the dub is bad. I was ready to give it mediocre, even "not too shabby" until the scene change and the women started talking. Ew. Sword might manage, though.

Hence "creepy characters". It's definately weird. The sword I really like isn't even in the clip. It's a rapier, and gauche set that I'd really like to see made. I'd post those clips, but they're really too long (25 min) when all I just want is to see the sword. And this fight scene was pretty tame compared to when the old guy and my rapier guy get into it. (IMHO)

I agree with Random on the dubbing... ugh, what's up with American seiyu- er, voice actors, being so cheesy? Especially the female ones... and there seem to only be around 15 different voice actors in our entire country, lmao.

I'd post my favorite video of it, but Sony claimed infringement on the song, so it stays silent on my hard drive.
