hello everyone~ i have been a fencer for two years and recently saw many ARMA clips on youtube, i am interested in this type of more "realistic" sword fights.... above all... i really want a European longsword!!
beside from getting plastic/LARP practice swords... i am interested in the "real thing", i want to get a longsword that is intended for longsword fencing (unarmoured fencing.. not the plate wearing knight type fencing, so the sword don't need to be heavy, preferably agile and light weight).
my price range is under $300(its my first sword), preferably weights under 3.5lb, blade length more than 32 inches, and POB/COG under 3.5 inches from the guard(i have an fencing intuitive... wants the sword to have excellent point control), and the handle preferably should be more than 9" since i want to use it as a 2-hander. i only found 2 sword met all the criteria after a few days of searching, that is the Generation 2 Lucerne Sword(or the "new" black prince, but i prefer Lucerne for the lighter weight), and the Hanwei Tinker Pearce Longsword.
after comparing the two sword... my impression of these swords were:
========================================
G2 Lucerne Sword:
Strong point:
1. Cheaper ($220 compare to $280)
2. Tested design (Mr. Paul Southren is kind enough to share his experience on the SBG sword guides website, and the Black Prince had passes his 2000+ tire cutting thrusting test)
3. Possibly stronger blades(it is has a shorter blade than the Tinker sword, but it is heavier, the excess "mass" had to be "somewhere").
4. Peened pommel (and i did find info about some Tinker sword thread pommel failure online, the last thing i want is a flying blade....)
Weak point:
1. Almost 3" shorter reach than the Tinker (Blade length of 32" compare to 34 3/4")... i am guessing this could be a big drawback in longsword fencing??
2. Aesthetics... for some reason this sword just looks awkwards to me... Tinker sword looks much better... i know looks doesn't mean anything in a sword fight... but that cross guard just look awful....
============================================
Hanwei Tinker Longsword:
Strong Point:
1. Probably an overall better fencing/practical longsword ... it's slightly lighter(3oz), about the same POB (3.5" for Tinker, 3" for Lucerne), and most importantly.. almost 3" longer.
Weak Point:
1. I am probably most concern about its pommel, there is a guy that had the pommel fell off of his Tinker Blunt (basically the exact same design), and I thought that a peened pommel is always better than a threaded one.
2. Weaker Blades? A blade that is 34 3/4" long, and has an overall weight of only 2lb 14 oz... i mean cutting of the weight must have sacrifice something right??... i don't want a "wimpy" sword... for the same length of blade, darksword's sword would probably be like over 3lb 6oz, Lucerne is a shorter sword, its still 3oz heavier than the longer Tinker sword.
===============================================
so... i kinda felt that before buying the sword, i better ask these questions first... this sword is going to be my first sword and probably going to be a beater sword, but i still want it to have good longsword fencing characteristics.
are there other swords out there in the market that can fit the bill? thank you very much for helping me!
============================================
P.S
what kind of sword they use in the following youtube clip??(this is the clip that really makes me want to practice its style)
Fechten mit dem langen Schwert
I really want to know..... to get the same level of agility and reach, how long the sword should "ideally" be? and "ideally" how much it should weight and what is its POB should be??
thank you~
