Alright, I picked up a Hanwei Edward III sword from Therion Arms back in August, right before it was discontinued; Hal told me it was the very last one Hanwei shipped to a vendor, lucky me! It's a really solid cutter once you touch up the edge a little, but I've noticed a hiccup lately: The hilt assembly is a little loose; the guard shifts about a millimeter, so does the grip. Now, it looks like it's peened pretty securely, so I'm not worried about it flying apart mid-swing, but it is a little annoying. What's the best method for tightening up a peen? Do I just clamp the blade and give the back end a few wacks with hammer, or is there more to it? Lay some knowledge on me!

there could be a lot more to it but also giving it a few whacks could solve everything. it all depends on WHY it is loose. you might need to take it all apart and tighten up the individual parts fit. one thing I learned while assembling my EMSHS is that there is a lot more to making a tight hilt than linear compression. so your guard and grip shift, do they shift sideways or forward-backwards? if it's sideways you might need to take it all apart and shim the guard and make a new grip, if it is forwards-backwards then lucky you whacking it should work.
on the other end of things there are lots of little tricks that can help without needing you to do invasive surgery. I don't like tricks (aren't they for kids?) because they tend to either not work for me, or not satisfy me but I'm particular.
I have heard tricks involving fishing line wrapped into the loose area but don't take my word on it. I prefer to not work that way.

This seems to be pretty common with Hanweis, a few of my swords have this issue. First the grips aren't shaped well enough to fit tightly to the tang so they shove thin wodden shims in there. Secondly, where the tang passes through the guard the hole is over large, there is usually some slop. I found with my swords that giving it several good strong taps with a ball peen hammer around the edges of the peen and a couple it the center does the trick.....temporarily anyway The problem is those gaps in the grip and guard...as long as theres room for play and extra vibration form use...over time it loosens the peen up. I found it helped when I was peening it to give the pommel a couple light taps to keep it seated firmly after every 3 or 4 peening blows. Be careful though....I got a little frustrated once and gave the peen a couple blows that were a little too hard and put a little bend in the tang under the grip. I fully intend to do a new grip for it that is grooved to fit the tang and possibly fill in the slot in the guard a bit with welder then file it out to a tight fit. Also, when your peening, you'll find if you have to peen over and over, the metal around the edges of the peen gets thin and will chip off eventually.
