hi, i'm looking for a double edged, 16" blade short sword. then i found this one, a windlass coustille: it's perfect, i love it. there's only one thing, the price. 100$ sounds too cheap, is it any good? are there other short swords exactly like the coustille, but of better quality?

It is a decent short sword, I have not heard otherwise about it. What's your price range? You could go with a custom maker if you have the pockets for it; otherwise, the Windlass is a decent option and for the money, you can't go wrong.

Darkintruder has this review of the Coustille from a couple of years ago, if you have not already seen it. I've always thought it a neat little sword/dagger?

Windlass is pretty good, especially for the money in my opinion. You should find no problem with that sword

Hmmm...while checking out that review, I just might have to pick one up myself, and use it as a companion dagger to a sword I've just commissioned...thanks for posting that Jim, I think I'm hooked!

Steffen, where are you ordering it from, if I may ask? I can't say I know much about shipping costs on the international scale, but maybe if you could find it at a merchant closer to you- might that not help shave off a few pennies?

Kult Of Athena
worst case scenario for Europe is 99$, for "very large or heavy order" i don't think a short swort and maybe a cutlass will fit that description.

I have an older version of the Windlass Coustille...about the same size as that except mine has a diamond cross section with no fuller and a more downturned guard. Mine is is very rigid and punched through an old hand forged 16 guage (1.5 mm?) shield boss about 10 or 12 times before the tip bent (because of a bad angle) once I hammered it straight again it was just as durable.
Id have no worries about buying that one...I have several Windlass', and Hanwei's and an Albion and I found Windlass' short blades to be quite stiff and durable. $100 is a pretty fair price for a blade that size.

oh well I see I'm late to this party but for any interested individuals I would suggest checking out the Kris Cutlery Baselard II kriscutlery.com/documents/medieval.html I hear good things about them.

I actually own one of these Coustelles. I shipped it over to England for slight customization a while back (50 bucks to ship one way ) and I still currently own it. I've given thought to redoing the scabbard, however, as it's overly loose. M.

Yeah, those standard Windlass scabbards leave much to be desired , but the plus side is that, since its just leather with no wood core, and all of mine came loose enough for the sword/dagger to fall out, you can squish that metal locket in a bit to hold tighter to the blade.

Like RicWilly has said, it looks like Windlass gets the shorties right.

I have one as well. Good, solid sword.
Grip could use 2 inches more in length. Blade could use 6 inches more in length.
