I recently bent one of my $50 musashi swords (cutting tatami, my form must be horrible, I really need to get to a dojo soon ) , and I'm not really interested in fixing such a cheap blade. Just throwing a blade in the trash doesn't seem safe. Is it really that easy, or is there some other way? Right now it's stuck in the ground as a garden decoration. Do I toss it in the trash? Bury it for some future archeologist to find? I'm really not sure what to do with it.

Um... can I have it? If you're willing to spend 20 minutes fixing it, it's not that hard... but if you really want to trash it, I'd love another project blade! ;D Thanks, Slayer

trash may not be the best solution as who knows who might pick it up. you could try the recycling place like slayers house

After it bent I decided to do a little destructive testing on it and it's quite a bit... destructed. I must say I'm even more of a fan of musashi after the destructive testing though, the thing cut cleanly into a 2x4 without chipping or bending any more than it already was...which make me wonder how the tatami bent it. I'll clean it up and take some pictures though if you are still interested.

Definitely. It's perfectly cool if you want to keep it or just throw it away, but hey, if I can salvage enough steel to make a little tanto or something, hooray for me. ;D It may not work, but if you're willing to post a pic or two that would be great! ;D Thanks, Punk... you really aren't THAT rotten. ...which make me wonder how the tatami bent it. The most likely cause was incorrect edge alignment. Edge alignment is very important and is often overlooked by beginners. Not that I'm saying you're a beginner, I'm just assuming that. As for the bent blade, I too would like to see some pics, I'm sure Slayer will take it, no matter what state its in.

If I ever felt I had to throw a sword away, I'd sink it in a lake or river. I'm old school like that.

How did the tip get rolled? Thats pretty ugly. Still, all in all something could be done with that.

Speaking of sword disposal... I have this jian I got for cheap at Pennsic (cost me $40). I gave it to a sharpening service to see if they could sharpen a sword properly before I handed over my CS Gim. Long story short, they screwed it up big time. So does anyone want it or have an idea what I should do with it?
It wasn't originally a bad sword. The tang is a little narrow and welded on, but it Seems pretty solid...

Yeah, I'd say you'd still not have much of a problem giving it away. You mentioned earlier needing to get to a dojo, which is a great idea. But there are some good cutting videos here in the "cutting vids" section that might help. Even looking up UBC on youtube might help a little till you find a dojo. Don't get me wrong, the best way to learn is from an instructor, but at least the videos might give you more info and save a few blades.

Yowch @ the tip. Still, that's not in horrible condition. I'd be happy to take that off your hands. ;D Do you have any plans for the tsuka and fittings that were on the blade? Anyway, I'll send you a PM about this in a bit. I'm watching a show about Pearl Harbor on the History Channel, but it'll be over in 15 minutes. Thanks a bunch, man! ;D -Slayer

Couldn't you just take it to a scrapyard? Seems to me the cost of shipping would be more than it's worth.

I don't know, shipping might only be $8. I think I'll cut the blade down and try mounting it as a polearm... I've always wanted to do that. ;D +1 to Punk for awesomeness, btw. \ -Slayer

I generally just give my old blades to the neighborhood kids. For real tho, I found this slo sticking in the ground when I was out and about one day. It's obviously made for a kid, got less than three inches of gripping space and about seventeen inches long total. A piece of crap for sure but steel and pointy just the same.

You're saying that most sword companies charge 3 times what it really costs to ship a sword??? I can't believe it!

Err, shipping would likely be twice that. Then again, I've only shipped euro swords, so who knows.
