ForwardBased on a story I've had working for a while now, Swords of Mallecoy designs are going to belong purely to the world of fantasy. I like to think my swords are realistic, as in they could be made and be functional if someone chose to do so. However, Mallecoy's characters and stories are copyrighted to me - but if a smith would like to use the design, or if someone would like to have it made, then please just ask. Next up is the background for the swords. So if you aren't in the mood for a read, then just skip this first post and get to the swords! BackgroundImagine, if you will, an empire. Ruled by a line of Emperors, and protected not by armies, but by an order of heroes. In the Empire of Mallecoy, there is such a place. It is a land of humans, demons, angels, and the angel/human hybrids, the nephilim. Mallecoy was forged from a kingdom of angels - a small kingdom of ancient times. There was the kingdom of angels, built around the capital, Harlen. There was the human cities of Kiren and Webb, and then there were the demons and cat people - Kirar - spread throughout. Unsatisfied with their lack of individual land, the demons spread Westward and crossed the deserts into the homeland of the draconic people known as the Brood. The Brood were nearly completely incapable of fighting, and so were easily conquered. But soon, unwilling to let the demons control a helpless race, the Angels of Mallecoy and their human and dragon allies went to war with the powerful demons. The Great Demon Wars erupted and tore the land apart. The angels were the great warriors of the alliance, while humans offered the numbers. The dragons, meanwhile, taught the angels how to make steel from iron and fire, and how to make swords from a metal known as Kcomite, a natural metal that could be smelted into steel with elemental properties In the end, both the Angels and the Brood were nearly wiped out. Demons retreated to the south, and humans were left to rule Mallecoy. While the humans were not as purely evil as most demons, they were just as selfish and destructive. They made Mallecoy into an Empire and enslaved the submissive Brood and the weaker Kirar. The humans also learned from the wars, seeing how unprepared their armies had been. Using lessons of war they learned from Angels, the humans formed the Order of Mallecoy, a group of warriors made up of five clans. Warriors were trained as Apprentices, graduated as Lieutenants and eventually became Captains - the most powerful warriors in the order. The Order of Mallecoy employed the use of the Kcomite swords, giving their warriors the ability to control the elements. Now, 3,000 years have passed, and Mallecoy is once again in turmoil. Emperor Val, Mallecoy's current ruler, is a strong abolitionist. Since the end of the Demon Wars, Mallecoy has had a strong economy, with a good amount devoted towards the slave trade. Brood and Kirar are heavily enslaved, and poorer humans are not even safe from slave hunters and traders. But Val wishes to change all of that. He has decreed that the Brood shall be considered citizens of Mallecoy, and therefore can no longer be hunted for slavery. It does not slow down the trade itself, but the decree has sent shockwaves through the Empire. A demonic noble, one of the few left in the Mallecoy, is using the unrest and the anger of men to gain power - along with his own rebellious force to fight against Val's anti-slavery acts. ~~~~~~ All the while, a man with bright, glowing blue eyes, has come to the Kiren slave market. He is Kale, the nephilim bounty hunter, and he has come not to buy slave, but to buy apprentices to help him in his hunts. Kale's decision leads him to buy a young human girl, named Ai, and a Brood woman named Kawthar. Kale finds himself with a challenge - Ai is as rebellious as she is talented and Kawthar can barely speak a word of common tongue - not to mention he's neglected to learn the fact that Brood are incapable of fighting. But soon, through a year of training, a bond is formed between master and apprentices. Ai has learned to fight with a sword to the point she can nearly best her master. Kawthar, while given a sword, oes not use it. Being a Brood, she can of course fly, just like her master with his wings of blue light. But the Brood is quicker and more agile in the air, and has learned quite well how to scout from the air. One day, a man comes with a message. He is from Mo'an-ki, a city far to the North. He has come seeking the aid of Kale, who's fame as a bounty hunter has spread over time. Kale takes the job, and the group heads North. And so begins the adventure.... On to the swords!!!!

Kconora - Sword of Kawthar The thing about Kcomite swords is that they all must bond with their wielders. The word "Kco" is an old Angelic word of unknown origin, since is a shortened version of one word or another. However it means "Living Blade". When one holds his or her sword made of kcomite, he or she will be filled with a feeling. An emotion, perhaps a tingle...something. It is the sword speaking to the master. Kconora was originally forged by Kale's father for his mother, Jael, who was a Captain within the Mallecoy Order. The sword was eventually given to Kawthar, though the peaceful and timid Brood ever even wielded it at first. However, much later in our story, Kawthar decides to wield her sword in order to learn to use her elemental talents of water better. She draws her sword for the first time in two years, and immediately she is filled with an emotion of sadness. Being a Brood she is extremely sensitive to emotion, and the sword is filled with it. The sword - longing to be wielded in the service of its beautiful master - feels rejected, and unwated - it feels hurt. But soon, Kawthar makes amends with the blade and soon learns to wield its power over water. She learns to love her sword dearly, and though she never does use it in combat, she becomes an extremely powerful healer, and can also make a very powerful shield of water by forming a dome of liquid around herself and anyone near her in danger. ~~~~ Kconora was designed to be a very light sword, easy for a woman of slight build to wield. With a narrow blade and wide fuller, the blade is designed for grace and quickness. Length: 36" - Blade: 30" - Handle: 5" Weight: 2.0 lb.

Hmm...a similar advertising campaign is currently waged by none other than Kit Rae- including fantasy art that accompanies the sword. I love stuff like this, Crockett...being a bit of a writer myself I can't tell you how many stories have flitted through my head while I'm out and about, reading, whatever.
To me, this is almost a cross between Kushiel's Legacy, Wheel of Time and Elder Scrolls Oblivion thrown together into an excellent stew; I love the map design...with all that landmass, you can orchestrate some incredibly thrilling set-piece battles.
It is hard to bring something altogether brand new to a genre that contains a wealth of previous material; so I see nothing wrong with formulaic, by-the-books tales so long as they're interesting and engaging enough to keep my interest. You have it so far!
I love a good 'tough' angel...movies like The Prophecy and novels like This Present Darkness portray angels in a much more exciting light. I look forward to more of this from you, sir.
May I suggest something? Seeing as your warriors have the ability to command the elements via their swords, maybe you can show the sword with some elemental aspect, like water or fire. The design is very...utilitarian. At least, to me.

Hey Crockett! Beautiful sword I'd buy one Only real critique I can give is that the fuller seems a bit wide for such a narrow blade. It leaves the cutting angle very steep which makes it more of a chopping blade than a smooth cutter. Any blacksmith please feel free to refute my observation since I don't make swords and have only a modest knowledge of the process, but just from handling cutters steep angles make for strong edges, but not good for cutting soft items like tatami or bottles or (as originally purposed) flesh.

I'd beg to differ on that last part- flesh is easily parted; that sword would do well thrusting into unarmored flesh as well as cutting...maybe more of a slashing than a cutting stroke but it would do the job.

Everyone has great points in their thoughts here. Ebon, I think it's awesome that you've read some Frank Peretti, he was one of my favorite writers growing up. VS, I would normally agree with the fuller comment. But this sword's fuller was actually inspired by another sword design. No idea on the functionality of it, due to the company making it...but Ryansword.com had a neat fullered blade: ryansword.com/swords/jwt46401.jpgSam, I think I can see where you are coming from. I had to think about it, but I can see where you might see some of the Movie's Glamdring in there. More swords to come. The problem is that Kale's sword is a Chinese broadsword style of sword, but is later reforged into a katana. Unfortunately, I have yet to figure out how to design curved blades well on Photoshop. But others are coming...along with more of the story.

I wasn't even thinking any specific sword, it just has the cliche LOTR look, would have loved to see the world of sword design preWeta.

Well, while I'm between desks with my laptop, I do have a few pictures of our characters. And more of the story. The city of Mo'an-ki was a spread out, welcoming settlement. It was far into the North, on the Eastern slopes of the Wolven Mountains. It was placed where snow fell without mercy, and cold was unrelenting. Summer was short, winter was long and any life that survived here was tough and resilient. The folk here were large in stature, both from diet and natural blessing. Men were strong, and despite their size, the women were renowned beauties. It was known for its army, a band of hard fighting men said to be as unrelenting as the northern winter.
The people of Mo'an-ki were famed dragon followers. While they did not worship the creatures as their ancestors did, their children were still grown to respect all dragons - despite the rare sighting of such animals - and told of legends of the great Black Mountain Dragons. Even Kale had heard of those dragons. They were warmblooded, fur covered Dragons who had the gift of speech. It was the Mountain Dragons who taught the secrets of kcomite and steel to the angels, and it was the city of Mo'an-ki where that story originated. It was said that a group of angels, exploring the Northern territories, at the time unknown, settled at the slopes of the mountains, where they met and were befriended by the dragons. That settlement was said to be where Mo'an-ki now stood. And so the story followed Kale, Ai, and Kawthar to the northern city. After a small fuss from Kawthar (who was cold blooded and severely hated the cold), the three got down to business and found out the city was in crisis. The neighbors of the men here - wild, humanoid creatures who seemed half man, half bear or wolf - the Gol, were raiding the outside farms and homesteads. The Gol had always been known as a violent bunch, but never had they been so bold. Now they were raiding any place that had goods. Once in a while, the Gol would steal food or maybe a hepp* or two. But now they were stealing horses, kidnapping women and children and even killing men. The three explored the mystery, and enjoyed the great hospitality of the men in the cold city. Much had happened on the trip. Ai had escorted the old messenger up the Harlen River to the city, while Kawthar and Kale took the Eastern Canyon Road to Fort Henn. Friendship flourished between Ai and her escort, Jorn, and love flowered between Kale and Kawthar. However, during the course of their stay in Mo'an-ki, Ai and Jorn were lost in a Gol Raid. Jorn was killed by their spears, and Ai was taken. The Gol were persued by Kale and Den, a resident Captain of the Mallecoy Order. But in the end, both the Gol and Ai were never seen or heard of again. So, it seemed, ended the story of Ai. She was only a human, having never had her spiritual energy** released, she was unable to wield the elements. But she was talented and agile. She was quicker than Kale, and just as skilled in a duel with a sword. Only in numbers could the Gol take the young girl. *Hepp: Hepp are a breed of northern sheep bread nearly exclusively by the people of Mo'an-ki. They are hearty animals known for their thermal wool. The wool, in pure form or woven, can be heated and will retain the heat for hours on end. Kawthar survived the cold of the northern lands by wearing an outfit and cloak of Hepp wool. **Spiritual energy: Energy needed to wield elements. This energy is channeled through Kcomite blades to control elements. Angels, Demons, and Nephilim naturall are born with this energy running through their bodies. Humans, Kirar, and Brood, however, must have the energy released by a skilled healer. ~~~~~~ Alrighty! Coming soon: Sword of Ai. As for character looks, I'm not an artist by any means. Swords are one thing, people are another. But I can color. So I've edited picutres to match what I think they may look like in my head. These pictures, obviously, belong to their original artists. Kale:(colored) img.photobucket.com/albums/v294/WyoWolf17/Nathan10.jpgKawthar:(Colored) img.photobucket.com/albums/v294/WyoWolf17/kawacom3.jpgAi: (Edited) img.photobucket.com/albums/v294/WyoWolf17/Ai-1.jpg

Hidy-hoe, neighbor! Great looking swords. I like the top one better...only because I'm not a ring pommel fan. Me neither. Also not loving the anime-inspired models for your characters...I was on board til I saw those. Not a fan of anime, not by a longshot. Kale looks like an anime-inspired Aragorn...hard bitten hero, that works. The other two look too waifish to be taken seriously; just my HO. Looking forward to seeing more of your interpretations of angelic blades.

I like the bottom one better because I AM a ring pommel fan. :-P I'm right there with you. Really like the look of the bottom one. As long as you're not selling them as a set I might look into that. It'd be my first Fable Blade purchase Crockett: I do really like the look, I think the wide fuller is really pretty. Maybe someone like Brendan could give us an insight as to how the steepness of the cutting angle affects the cutting power of the blade? Like I said, I'm no expert just making an observation

For a story like this, Paladin, I agree. Even though I am an anime fan, I would not want this story made that way. Animated? you bet...but not anime. at least not the traditional style.
Kawthar was not anime. She was an original art known as a Dragon Elf. I edited the colors on it. Kale...well, he's a edited/colored picture of Gambit from X-Men and Ai...well...yeah she's purely anime.
But in the end, I just wanted the idea to come across. I can take them down though if you think it'll do more harm to the story than good.

No, if you like it, you should leave it- you're the author after all, and this is your story. I enjoy reading it; the characterizations are your standard flawed hero and friends- the images aren't what come to MY mind but I think with each reader, the interpretation will be different for them.
However, if you want your readers to have the same image then you should go with it. I'd make Kale look a touch older though, more of a professional soldier look maybe? Kawthar is hot...very hot. Not sure she should even be dressed like that, traipsing around the countryside looking for trouble! LOL
Ai, well...she's ancillary it seems, and disappears relatively quickly in the story, probably could just leave her image out altogether unless you're designing a specific sword just for her.

Ai's part is a bit bigger than people may think. But that;s a secret for now. hehe.
As for Kawthar, she is supposed to be hot, lol. And she is cold blooded. Brood hate, and I mean HATE clothing. It's not about sex appeal, it's about freedom of movement and the feeling of air over their skin.
Kale is meant to look younger. He is a Nephilim, and has a naturally long life. Even though he's in his 90's, he's meant to look only in his late 20's.
But most importantly, thanks for all the kind words. As a writer, I live off of feedback. I always appreciate it.

Kcohemé - Sword of Ai Kawthar could always tell, even before she loved him, that Kale had more to his life than he had revealed. She had indeed learned much of Kale in this journey. In Fort Henn, they had gained two traveling companions in Kale's old friend, Fin, the scholar, and his adopted Brood son, Helim. In the weeks between Henn and Mo'an-ki, Fin had taught Kawthar how to properly speak common tongue, how to read maps, and even a bit of common ethics such as table manners. These were all new and exciting for the young, curious brood, but there was nothing that enthralled her more than learning about her lover. Loss had plagued his early life - something Kawthar had guessed when she first met him in the slave market. It was the lack of glimmer in his otherwise beautiful eyes. Though lately, since their love had begun to flourish, Kawthar had noticed a strength and shine that seemed to return to Kale's eyes. She had seen and learned of a gloomy past in Kale. But never had she seen him so devastated as he was with the loos of his student, and her dear friend, Ai. Upon her arrival at the old cabin with Kawthar and Kale, Ai had shown a fire that Kawthar had not when training. She was quick as lighting, and as clever as a fox. She was stubborn, strong for her size, and was as playful as she was beautiful. Even so, when the time called for it, Ai had shown a ferocity in a fight that impressed even the hardened Kale. As a result, she was given Kcohemé, a sword that Kale had worked on himself. The blade was another one Kale's father's projects, but it had never been fitted. The sword had been completed for Ai specifically by Kale. Kawthar was his lover, but Ai was his apprentice. She took to the sword like a duck to water. But, apparently, it was not to be. Yes, there was hope...Ai would not be killed easily. And her sword was not left behind. But parts of her clothing and spatters of blood in the snow where a stuggle had taken place in the Northern Wood was beginning proof. Kale and Kawthar and Denn looked for the missing girl for days, and even struggled through the beginnings of a frigid blizzard. But nothing was found. Not a track, not a drop of blood. She was gone...and only the worst could be assumed. ~~~~~~~ Kcohemé was designed off of a Jian style of sword. The scabard and the hand guard are fitted with three emeralds, and made of folded steel. The handle was bleached buckskin over oak, and the pommel was folded steel like the handguard. The whole thing was accented with bits of brass. She was heavier than Kconora, but in Ai's hands she was as quick and deadly as any blade could be. She was made of Kcomite, and though Ai had seemed to bond with the sword, the girl had never been Released, and therefore could not harness the elemental techniques possible with the sword. Length: 38" - Blade Length: 30" - Handle: 7" Weight: 2.4 - 2.6 lb.

Kcosaga - Sword of Kale It is quite possible that not everyone has heard of Kale, the famed Bounty Hunter. There are those who do know him as an enemy, and those who know him personally as a friend. But anyone who knows his name, at all, also knows the name of his sword. Kcosaga. [Koe-SAY-guh] Kcosaga was made for Kale by his father. It was a Kcomite blade made unlike any other. It had to be - Kale controlled the rarest of all the elements: The Blue Wind. Wind was a common element, but Kale had the rare ability - and the immense well of spiritual energy - to infuse his own angelic power into his wind, causing it to glow blue and become all the more powerful. Tale of The Blue Wind Kale's past was revealed to Kawthar in more detail than she ever expected after the loss of Ai. Denn, a Mallecoy Order Captain stationed in Mo'an-ki knew Kale well enough to tell her. Many things of the Empire were odd to the eyes of a brood. The brood were a tribal people with love for simplicity in life. But even then, Kawthar was still able to pick up on things and know when something was just not right. She always found it odd how many people knew Kale, but even more how many people talked of him - a simple bounty hunter - with such reverence and fame. Then came Denn's story that explained so much. Kawthar had been taught vaguely by Kale and then more thoroughly by Fin about the Order of Mallecoy. It was a noble group and a seemingly well intentioned effort - though the presence of any military never made much sense to a brood. The feelings of the brood made the story Denn told her all the more shocking for her. Her lover, her teacher, Kale, had once been a Captain in the Order. And apparently he was no ordinary Captain either. He had been a legend - well known for his power and his accomplishments. He had been the youngest Captain ever, at eighteen. Slowly, as Kawthar listened to Denn's story, things began to piece together. Many years ago, there was a woman named Jael Kumada, a Nephilim of the Kumada Clan and a famed and powerful Captain. She married a human bladesmith, named Baer. They had two children - the strong and promising warrior, Kale and then his younger sister, Sael. Growing up, Kale, was trained by his mother to be a warrior, while Sael - a water wielder - was taught to heal by the Highwater clan. On the same day of Kale's promotion to Captain, Sael, only sixteen, ran off with her current lover, a Harlen noble named Grimlyte. It was a union that had been forbidden by Jael, but Sael, being the rebellious one, went off with the man anyway. But her lover was more than he seemed - as was well known by Sael's mother. Grimlyte was soon revealed to be a demon, using the guise of a politician within the lower ranks of nobility. Marrying the daughter of a Captain, Sael thought, was surely a gesture of trust and simply trying to be accepted. They had met when Sael was still very young and his handsome looks and suave words had wooed her from the very beginning. Before long, Sael was completely in love with the demon. Within six years after running off, she was with child. However, as the story went, Grimlyte got himself into trouble with the law. Grimlyte had always been careful not to outright o against the Order or the Empire. But finally he'd shown his colors and made a mistake. He had started a riot in the Kirin slave market when Val, the new Emperor, had been crowned. Tensions with slave traders had risen to a boiling point with the anti-slavery ruler, and Grimlyte couldn't help himself. The demon became a fugitive, and he ran...taking his pregnant young wife with him. To track the demon, the Order sent none other than Captain Jael - who promptly chose her son, Kale, as her partner. The two tracked Grimlyte to a cave outside of Glem. It was here that the trapped Grimlyte drew his sword and faced the two Captains, and it was hear that Jael's greatest fears were realized. Grimlyte transformed in front of them, revealing himself to be a High Demon, one of the Exiled demons, descendant of the warlords of the Demon Wars. He was a powerful duel-wielder of Fire and Lightning, and a fierce fighter. But not fierce enough. Jael was a duel-wielder as well, with the power of wind and water at her disposal. And then there was Kale, Captain of the Blue Wind. The battle began. Jael, with her great spear, Kcolyka, Kale with Kcosaga, and Grimlyte with his all out power. But Grimlyte soon found the two Captains impossible to handle, and unable to run he had to resort to the unthinkable. Their strength was their discipline and the concentration that Jael took with her into battle. He had to break it. And he did. Taking his wife in front of him, he used her as a shield, forcing Kale and Jael to lower their swords and negotiate. But as the two Captains tried to save their dear Sael, Grimlyte reached back, then thrust forward, plunging his blade into Sael's back. Throwing her body to the side, Grimlyte attacked. Jael was known for her toughness, but even her solid discipline could not stop her heart from breaking, and her lungs from letting out a pained, utterly broken scream. Her guard was down, and her daughter was her only worry at that moment. And in that moment Grimlyte took his opprotunity. In a quick stroke, he struck Jael in the side, opening her ribs and sending her to the ground. All that was left was the High Demon, and the inexperienced but infuriated Kale. The two battled, and though Grymlyte held the power, Kale's energy and anger kept the battle even. For hours they went at each other in the cave. Finally, Kale let loose an attack with everything he had. The entire cave filled with light, and a blast of wind, as powerful as a tornado and thin as a blade ripped through the cave walls. The attack wounded Grimlyte, and as the demon stumbled, Kale took his mother's spear and threw it with the rest of his might. The head of the spear struck Grimlyte in the chest, and the demon was hurled into the darkness. At the same time, the cave had begun to shake as Kale's last attack had made the whole system unstable. Gathering the bodies of his mother and sister, Kale fled the cave as it collapsed behind him with Grimlyte trapped inside. Kale had won, and had beaten a High Demon in a one on one duel. But at a terrible price. Kale went on within the Order for two more years. But it was said his power was never the same after the battle. His Nephilim powers - driven by the heart of a protector - had no one close to protect, and thus his powers became weaker and weaker. Eventually, ashamed and grieved, Kale resigned his position and seperated himself from society, soon taking up his current job as a bounty hunter to get by. And so Kale's story came together. Why he seemed so distant and unfullfilled when Kawthar had met him. Why a strength seemed to return to him when they kissed. It made sense now. She now looked on her lover with a new eye for his heart. She was his strength now, and he was her angel....her Captain of the Blue Wind. ~~~~~~~~ Kcosaga's design has been in the works for ages. Kcosaga is the single oldest idea I've had in all of my fantasy stories. And finally, it is going into something I think it fits into. Based on a Jian style I spotted on the Zhi Sword website, I added a bit of Baer Kumada flare to it and made the blade my own. I'm really quite happy, and proud, of this design. Fittings are steel, the pommel is accented with silver inlaid feathers. Length: 40" - Blade Length: 29" - Handle: 8" Weight: 2.8 lb.
