If it didn't have Gold Leaf and Jewels on the hilt, I would have to pass.

no offense, but wasting $16,000 on a sword, unless it shoots nukes out of its tip, is kinnda too much... I guess you would have to have been there to see and hold that sword, it was magnificent, a 4 or 5 ft leaf blade, the guard was two eagles back to back with their wings flared out and touching at the tips, made of metal, and at least two feet of handle so you could control the huge sword. Holding this sword made you feel like you could conquer the world with it Conan would have loved it, and been strong enough to weild it properly a 7 ft blade is way too big to be usable...

Tell that to the Landsknecht who were renowned for having massive swords with monstrous guards and whatnot. Maybe not 7 feet in length, but some came awful close.

Another Ren Faire, another disappointment. After the responses to my earlier thread, it was not such a disappointment this time - even expected. The handmade swords offered at Wichita were on a par with what I saw at KCRF a couple of weeks ago, but what was different this time was the number of vendors selling crap SLO's for $59 and under. I saw a lot of patrons carrying $40 Katanas under their arms. I really wanted to ask them if they intended to try cutting anything with it or practicing forms. But i restrained myself and practiced a little nunya... caveat emptor, and all that. So, based on my limited experience and other comments, why are quality sword dealers conspicuously absent from Ren Faires? Has it actually been tried before, or is there an automatic assumption that Renfaires "aren't the proper market?" Well, time for me to check out of this hotel and head back to my corner of Kansas... ;D I dont know what to tell you. You must be at the wrong ren fests. Look here to see where we sell. Mostly ren fests. baltimoreknife.com/dealer.htmI am good freinds with a few junk sword dealers that do ren fests. I hate that they are allowed in. It ruins the feel of the show. Ren Fests are supposed to be about crafts and meeting the poeple who make such objects face to face and seeing the pride in their work...Cheap imports or even imports at all at a Ren Fest is just a joke. If you dont make it then you shouldnt be able to sell it.

I agree, thats how it SHOULD be, but at most of the RenFaires I have gone to... the cheap sellers of SLO's tend to outnumber the craftsmen 2-1... and the craftsmen are almost NEVER anywhere near the quality that you and your brother are.

I guess I have been out of the circut for about 10 years...
You may not believe it but sending a letter of complaint to your local fair def matters.

I've printed out the applications for Scarborough Fair and Texas Ren Fair two years and a row and have not sent them in for this very reason. And yet, each year I go I see more and more rebranders with Chinese or Indian made swords and armor. Since the mid 90's the number of actual craftsman at the fairs I go to has really declined.

Talking about being "UN-fair," I can see why Odingaard is a FORMER vender.

"Un-fair," referring to the politics and cost that reply #13 mentioned.

From getting to know vendors at different faires, different states, Odingaard echos a lot of what is said. I'm just surprised that some vendors manage to survive at all.
However...my impression is that there is at least one or two decent sword vendors at most of the larger faires I've attended (TX Ren, Scarborough, and So. Calif Ren Pleasure Faire). Perhaps smaller sized faires just aren't worth the hassle as Odingaard points out.

Been out of Kansas for 3 years now, but I thought KCRF was artisan's only? When did they allow crap to be sold?

The swordmakers are all companies like Badger Blades, etc. The guy selling bamboo shakuhachi flutes is an artisan/maker. The guy selling drums & rhythm instruments sells a mix of handmade and commercially available goods The biggest majority of clothing & boot/shoe dealers are just retailers selling a mix of US made & import goods.

I'm sorry, I have to make a correction to what I have said previously in this thread and elsewhere on this forum.
It was Not Angus of ATrim that I met at the PA Renne Faire. It was a guy who goes by "Little John," a knife maker. I don't know if anyone else here has even heard of him...
My memory is just as bad as ever, I guess.
