That riding sword looks damn nice. But then, all of those swords do Argh! That Gus trim type XVIII will be mine!! (when it's in stock, lol). Which Type XVIII? Arguably, there's 5 of them since the Riding Sword is also a Type XVIII. Do you mean the AT-1557? Yup, that's the one

What about the 1557 makes it so good? It feels weightless in the hand. When I first got it... and I held it in my hand... a huge smile came across my face... it just felt PERFECT.

SIGH! Gus has made so MANY swords that are just MUST haves I don't think I'm likely to buy a European sword from any one else ever. the EMSHS I bought was an experiment and for the price I couldn't say no. even when you figure in all my costs the EMSHS only ran me about $250
I seriously love sinlge handed swords and Gus has some great ones: 1557 Riding MMXIV double fullered MMXIV heavy spec. Antioch (oh wait I'm getting that one already. happy!!) flared shoulder type X and that's just the single handers
my list of longsword desires is not much shorter

And yet I remember u not being able to cut shite with it You have a good memory! Yeah, that was actually the moment I realized just how BAD of a swordsmen/cutter I am. That sword was, on paper, everything I love in a sword. Then, in hand... it FELT like everything I love in a sword... the weight, balance, handling... all perfect. Then I went to cut with it... and I did VERY poorly. Such a small, light sword with so little mass, edge alignment becomes THAT much more important. Mine SUCKED beyond the telling of it. In a fit of sadness, I tradded it to Mike. Now, as time has passed and I have handled and cut with more swords... and gotten a better sense of how they and I work... I would LOVE to have a chance to practice with one of the 1557's again. I still think its the right sword for me, I just have to learn how to use it. In this case, it was the swordsman, not the sword, that was found wanting.

yeah, but I'm trying to resist those because if get one I may have to ask Christian to add a thumb tab and hawk-head pommel to it so it would be a messer like the ones from Talhoffer. but I'm sure that would not come cheap.

What about the 1557 makes it so good? I guess I have a type XVIII fetish . I love that blade type be it one or two handed.

What about the 1557 makes it so good? IMO, the salient points in favor of the 1557 are: - Very light weight but retains massive cutting performance
- Extremely fast handling
- Harmonic balance is near perfect
- It has a very sharply pointed tip that is "awl-shaped" and can thrust through mild steel plate with ease (MRL Vambraces at least) with no damage to the tip
- While the tip profile indicates that the tip area should be a poor cutting area, I have found that both my 1557s "tip cut" almost as well as the best spatulate tipped Type X cutters.
In short, I can't find any drawbacks to the 1557 except its short reach. And that makes it draw and cut from the scabbard with extreme ease.

If you seriously want a 1557 and are ready to buy it, call or email Christian Fletcher and ask how long it would take to get one. You might be pleasantly surprised.

I'm sure he would; neat sword but not my type, at least, not for now. I'm still stuck in the Crusades as far as arms and armor go...

In hand though, is it really all that short?

In hand though, is it really all that short? No, it's not really "that short", just shorter than the average medieval single-hander (30-32" blades). It is a similar type to all the various "Henry V" type swords. I would best describe it as handy... and oh so sweet.
