ive been thinking of this for awhile. the only reason i have swords is to use them. im an avid backyard cutter and i also enjoy training with swords. but i really dont see the point of having a functional sword unless its somehow put to use. your guys/gals opinions?
edit-sorry i messed up. pole question is off but you guys understand

I cut with everything I have... some more then others. Swords I don't like for cutting I end up selling or trading, and I refuse to own a weapon I won't use.

i cut with my blades. i like what shodowhowler said "i refuse to own a weapon i dont use" knives, guns and 3 foot blades. gotta be able to use them. if not, why buy "real"( production real.lol i fully understand not cutting with a very one of a kind blade.)
i would still cut.lol

Exactly... if your not going to use it, might as well have bought an SLO... it will look better on the wall and cost less in most cases. I'd even cut with a Jody Samson sword if I had one... I have a few custom one of a kind swords, I cut with them also. No point in it being functional, if your not going to have it function.

Cut and train, but informal training from trained friends and historical manuals.

CUT with the swords I own? ummmm NO! why would I? I mean that's just plain old destructive and we all know true pleasure cannot come from violence. I'd never consider it.
sorry Cole, couldn't resist. you know my answer, I train, I cut, I don't see much point in owning a sword I won't use. I mean heck there is so much of beauty in a sword that is invisible and only observable when is use that I think anyone who doesn't cut with a sword they own has missed the chance to appreciate it's true beauty.

The only functional sword I would ever own and not cut with would be an antique. In my mind something like that is more of an art piece. However, thats not to say I wouldnt dry handle or be tempted to cut some light targets with one...

I cut and train with my all my swords. The one that did not stand up to cutting was cleaned up and had the edge taken off for use in the dojo for kata. I am of the mind also if you are going to own it then you should know how to use it and use it.

I am so much into using my knives that I prepared a chicken stir fry the other night with my wraith, I don't just cut with them, I will use them any way I can to get the most out of them.

i think in this day and age saying that "i own a sword so i must use it" is a funny thing to say. in my opinion, chopping and stabbing a few bottles isnt using a sword. if you wanna be able to legitamitly say you are a sword user.....go out and kill people with it, and form an underground fight club where you fight to the death with swords. other wise you just sound like a nerd

Perhaps you should acquaint yourself with the word use as a transitive verb but also of the role of the sword in sport, non-lethal duels and as a cultural ritual. Kinda impolite to insult many of the members here in my opinion. Unless of course you use the term nerd as a single minded enthusiast, but it didn't sound like it.

To the OP:
I use my swords to cut, and to train.... Some of them.
Some of them i don't...
Just because you own a sword doesn't require one to use it. Its like collecting wine, you may keep it for years, Occasionally you pull it out and look at it, One day you may pop the cork and enjoy drinking some of it.
Or maybe you won't... Maybe you never use it, maybe you just enjoy knowing you have it. To each his own

I have a couple of blunts right now for training. It's just not cool to swing sharps at other people. However, my next sword will be a sharp for cutting.
I figured it would be smart to put some time into learning how to handle the weapons properly before swinging one that could do serious harm to me or others. I'll probably give my self a few more months of formal training yet. I need to get over the "Hey, I think I might know something" stage and go to the "Wow, I have so much to learn" stage first.
I guess my question from the poll is what is meant by "training"? Training solo, group or formal lessons? With sharps, with blunts, with sword simulators?

I do a little cutting with everything I own but I see some swords like a piece of fine art.I dont know who would spent a ton of cash on say a Patric Barta and cut tree limbs or water bottles with one. www.templ.net/english/weapons-antiquity_and_early_middle_age.php#115-spatha_swordOr a Jake Powning www.powning.com/jake/home/j_homepg.shtmlOr a few other smiths that although they make functional swords they are to much piece's of art for me to use.Like James just said sometimes they are like collecting fine wine or more to me a piece of fine art.To be taken out and admired but also knowing it could be used if needed.

Say I'm a heretic, but I would cut some lighter targets even with Barta or Powning sword.

Art or no, anything in my armory is used for cutting. It is, for me, a disservice to the blade to let it sit on display and not let it remember why it was created.

I cut and train, but sadly don't own my own sword yet. One day, hopefully soon I will get my first. I train in a formal JSA, primarly with bokken or bokudo for spar practice. My blunt iaito is on the way, so soon I'll have that to train with.
