Hi everybody,
Just wondering if anyone has seen this new rapier from MRL? It looks pretty cool to me, but wanted some feed back from you guys before I purchase it.

Very interesting. I found it here: www.kultofathena.com/product~item~501175~name~Pilsen+Rapier.htmKOA is $85 cheaper then everyone else. The grip is similar to my practice rapier. I hole the pinky and ringfinget just in front of the pommol. The top three fingers rest loosely on the grip. The one in the picture has 40" blade but I have a 36" too like the Pilsen. Gripping the rapier further back on the handle like I do gives extra reach. The excess ring guard on the Pilsen will bring the weight more forward, so it will be more difficult to hold it the way I like to hold it. I would have to either cut some of the rings off or move my hand up and finger it properly. What we are talking here is more an issue of personal style and comfort. You won't know if this rapier is right for you until you try it out. There is a stitch that runs down the grip of the Pilsen, I'm not how I feel about it. I would want to take a closer look. Overall, I think its a good rapier for $200.

I really like the look of this one... its my favorite of the rapiers MRL is offering right now. I've seen it in person at their showroom... but I did not handle it. It looks good in person as well.

I also love the look of it, if I were to get a rapier anytime soon it would probably be this, but rapiers are pretty low on my list at the moment.

I also like the looks of this one. And being left handed there aren't many rapiers I can use.

I really look forward to handling that Rapier at some event. I might be interested in buying it myself. This weapon needs to be reviewed by someone who knows how to use a rapier. I would put a safety tip on it and fence someone. I doubt it comes sharp. I would also try it some longsword plays with it so see how it holds up. If I get to handle it at some event, I will report my opinion here.
I like because I believe it is the missing link between longsword and rapier. Most people assume that rapiers developed solely out of cut and thrust... but I hold the opinion that the rapier developed along two lines simotaniously that converged.
The Pilsen Rapier seems to have enough mass to function as a longsword. Withing German Longsword there is a subsection called "Sprechfenster". This is a more advanced level of Longsword that is hardly known, but what it is is two-handed rapier fencing in the Liechtenauer tradition. From this point the transition to Rapier fencing is negligible.

tsafa: It didn't look, to me, like it would be any better a cutter then most of Windlass's other rapier offerings... very few production sword makers make a rapier the way I want one. Now THIS... this is what I want: www.myarmoury.com/talk/viewtopic.php?t=13564 I have tried to come up with a way to find the money fot this... I want it so bad.

How can KOA under cut the price of MRL so much? I thought MRL and windless were the same company.

Starstuff- I'm thinking that for legal and tax purposes they have two companies set up (and not necessarily the business names they market under). It is possible that manufacturer (MLR) and the retailer (Windlass) have drifted apart in ownership and management. Just a possibility the makes sense, I don't know for sure.
Shadowhowler- Make him an offer... you never know. Atirm swords go for about $400-$500 new. I would start bidding at $300. He has been selling that thing since June 2008! Its not moving.

Windlass manufactures and uses MRL to sell their stuff. I'm sure MRL sells the stuff from other companies (resin goods, clothing), which are likely subsidiaries of Windlass Steelcrafts.

MRL is an authorized seller of Windlass swords, among others. They have swords from time to time that I'm sure Windlass didn't make. They sell whatever's clever it seems.

Atlanta Cutlery, MRL, and Windlass are all pretty much the same company. MRL carries and sells a lot of their own Windlass swords... but they also wholesale them out to hundreds of vendors all over the globe... and then those vendors sell em for whatever the heck they want, as long as they can turn a profit. Other vendors are almost always selling for a better deal then MRL themself... ...except on the deal of the day... thats always half off, and sometimes its something pretty cool. Wraith: Yeh, your a big tease... what are those rapiers... and how much are they? Really like the black hilted ones... VERY sexy. tasfa: He HAS been selling them for ages... but he has also claimed many many times he will not lower the price on them... likely why he has been selling them for ages. The Blades are Atrims... but the swept hilts are custom and very, VERY cool. He would likely not even return my e-mail if I offered him 300 bucks. If I thought I could pick up the sword and dagger for about 600, I'd do it, even tho I really can't afford it, because I love those blades... but I'm sure he wouldn't go for that either. Mores the pitty.

tasfa: He HAS been selling them for ages... but he has also claimed many many times he will not lower the price on them... likely why he has been selling them for ages. Then he really is not "trying" to sell them when something sits in the marker for that long and the price does not adjust to the demand. He is likely trying to make a profit on them or thinking will will get the same price as if they were new. That is kind of silly, because for that price, I would just contact Darkwood to make me a brand new one and give me their warranty. You could send the picture and they can replicate it. Its a pretty generic design. I'm very particular about the feel of rapiers. I prefer not to buy any until I have handled them... or unless the seller will take them back for a full refund if I don't like.

Hello all I picked up the rapier some time ago (in June), and I just found this post now. I had wanted to review it, but I haven't had the time to do one yet. It's a pretty nice piece. There were a few things I'm not so fond of, but overall I like it a lot. It has a steel threaded pommel (whether this is accurate for 15/600s, I am not sure. I know some later swords may have had threaded pommels). If I don't oil it after I use it, it corrodes. The guard, though, is made of a different material, or it is plated. It does not rust, and this makes the appearance somewhat inconsistent -dull gray and mirror polished silvery. I was doing some testing (on the thrusting capacity, and a few tip cuts, I did not have mine sharpened), and it seemed to be pretty adequate for that job. I even managed some tip cuts with the point. The blade was pretty standard for a Windlass; the mirror polish is a bit gaudy, but not too bad. The scabbard was leather with a metal throat and chape, with a nice pattern on the metal fittings. I don't particularly like the crossguard. While I like the design, and the fact that I can use it left handed, it's really small and makes me feel like I'm going to break my knuckles if I torque it too much. Anyway, I'll do a full review later. That's just a sneak peek, until I can have the time to write a review. Life has been absolutely crazy, so I cannot guarantee when I will post my review.

Tsafa: the two I linked to are from and Aussie company called manning imperial. The first picture, that rapier is $1650 AUD and the dagger is $900, the set is $2250. Second picture $1850 for the rapier $1100 for the dagger, $3000 all up

I wonder how they do their guards at manning, that would be where the time consumption is but they are very worthy looking pieces .......
