Hi, I'm thinking of buying an accusharp from Trueswords.com to sharpen some of my dull cheap stainless steel knives. If i ordered just the accusharp, the shipping would be almost as much as it, so I'm thinking of getting something with it(get more for the money shipping-wise). I need some help deciding what to get, something cheap around $10(or less), not exceeding $15. Keep in mind that I'm in Southern California, so anything i buy will have to be able to be shipped there. I'm looking at a cold steel "sharkie" right now.
P.S.: I didn't know where this thread should go, so please inform me, for future posting.

Hey Pyro I would go for any one of their spring assist knives on www.trueswords.com/knives-spring-assist-c-58_104.html would be useable, and they are super easy to open one handed and FAST. They require you to start opening before the spring pushes it out and are therefore legal in most places. regards, Rob

Please, whatever you decide to buy, just promise us that the accusharp won't ever come in contact with the blade of a real sword.

Walk over to your neighborhood Wal-mart or hardware store and buy one off the shelf. No shipping, no waiting, nothing extra to buy, and you even get some exercise. Lowes and Home depot have them too. Look by the lawn mowers.

Accusharps could be good. I have a Lansky. Same thing. I have used it to establish edges on thick arrivals. Here is the trouble. Carbide cutters are housed in a soft plastic environment. How on earth can cutters that face rapid action, remain true, when their foundation is mush? You MUST keep the cutters clean. If you allow the cuttings to build up around the cutters, you will produce the most horrid grooves imaginable. This is impossible since the soft plastic gets softer with friction generated heat. This lets the filings (sometimes spiraled strips!!!) to trap and retain. The only answer for this type of sharpener is a strong. hardened aluminum housing. After you establish an edge with said tool, you need to dig out the files anyhow. With files you build the convex edge. You can use files off the bat. Many will advise this. BUT you can peel away a 1 mm blunt very quickly with carbide cutters. They just need a better housing than the $9.99 store brand can provide.

So what you are saying here is that the reason we shouldn't use the accusharp on a sword is because of that plastic housing?

I wouldn't use an accusharp on a sword because it removes too much metal and leaves a steep secondary bevel. I tried accusharp type devices without a lot of success. Did moderately well with sandpaper and stones none compares to the edge I can get on my beltsander ala Tom K. (ianflaer). Having said that, our benefactor did sharpen this sword with an accusharp, (see the video in the link).

wow the accusharp arguement again. I understand people looking for an anwer to sharpening swords that is easier and faster than hand sharpening but accusharps are NOT the answer. the only thing I'd use an accusharp on is scissors or a lawnmower blade. the belt sander Ric and I use does cost more but once you use one and figure out just how easy it is and how freaking sharp your blades get when you do I don't think you'd ever want to use anything else.
for the OP I second the option of going to your local hardware store or Walmart. they'll have them. no need to pay shipping or buy junk you don't really want just to get a cheap sharpener for your cheap knives

Well, i only plan to use the accusharp on some really cheap stainless steel knives i've had for a while(can't stand to have a dull blade no matter what it is). i have a whetstone and a "diamond sharpener" whatever you call it, the ones in the pen-type-housing. I just want a really cheap solution to spending 10 minutes reshaping the edge and making it sharp. Plus i could always just give it a few passes with the accusharp and finish it off with a stone. Also, for the other item i have decided on this bowie: www.trueswords.com/massive-antique-bowie-p-905.html. Yes, i am aware that it is crap and no i am never going to use it, it is going to be a display piece on my shelf.

Well, my personal recomendation would be for something that you could, and might actually use if you have the inclination or the need. www.trueswords.com/cold-steel-heavy-machete-p-1997.htmlThis is the baddest ass machete I have ever swung. I just got mine in a few days ago but didn't get to really use it until today. Me and my dad were clearing some trees and I brought it down as a "lets see what this puppy can do" O....M....G I'm going to do a more in depth post after my shower... as I really need one, but if you have any overgrowth, this is the puppy to swing around. There are other very handsome machetes in stock if you want something in a different style, but if you go the machete route, go Cold Steel. I also got the 24" cold steel latin machete. I thought it would be my favorite but "The Butcher", as I call it, turned out to be my honey. I know it's 15 bucks and you were looking for something a tad cheaper, but these things are a blast!
