I hope that none of our other older members leave. Well, they will. Its just a fact of life... people get their feathers ruffled... it happens. More people will leave, I promise you, and a lot more new people will join the fourms... and the cycle will go on and on. Its all good. I agree that the 'Hutspur' bashing while he is, apparently, no longer here serves no purpass and is in poor taste tho.

These things happen on any forum if you stick around long enough. As wonderful as the internet is, it doesn't always convey our intent when we post as clearly as we might wish, and sometimes an inadvertent comment can be taken as a direct assault----and, sometimes, vice versa. I've gotten all hepped up and left forums in a huff, and once I had a forum get all hepped up and leave ME in a huff. Sometimes you end up going back, sometimes you move on. There's a season for everything, and its different for each of us.
Once I got used to "Hotspur being Hotspur" I was able to learn an awful lot from him, and I hope he's well and happy.

I'm sure that he is still active on myarmoury and SFI. Most likely he felt that his posts were not appreciated by us. I don't know, and I wish I did. Do you think that he would re-join if someone asked him to? I would hate for his reason for leaving being caused by a misunderstanding.

I'm very accepting, especially online, but that guy is just WAY to much of a tool to deal with. I'm sure that he is still active on myarmoury and SFI. Most likely he felt that his posts were not appreciated by us. I don't know, and I wish I did. Do you think that he would re-join if someone asked him to? I would hate for his reason for leaving being caused by a misunderstanding. Glen is a big boy and, as you and others have mentioned, plenty smart. If he felt he needed to delete his account for some reason, respect that and by doing so respect him. I don't think bugging him with 'Please come back!' type comments is going to win him over. He made a choice, his reasons are his own... to speculate on them is pointless. Leave it be.

He has most likely gone back to SFI... I'm sure that he is still active on myarmoury and SFI. Not much activity at SFI. I have been poking around there the last few days. That place is a ghost town. The kind of topics that use to bring out furious debate a year ago now go unanswered for a whole day. I guess people got tired of being told to save up and buy a $700 sword when they only wanted to spend $300. My Armory only looks busy because they have just one General Discussion area were everyone posts. It gets annoying because if a thread is inactive for just a day or two, it gets buried in the old pages. [wondering if I said too much] SBG is King of the Hill !!! I hope that none of our other older members leave. How old is old? [scratching my head] Anyway... I think the key to SBG's success has been that there are No Experts Here. We all have opinions and they all carry equal weight regardless if we are making our 1st post... or our 5,000th post. When people loose touch with that reality... they soon become unhappy with everything and everyone around them.

SFI it seems was deserted by Adrian Ko, then alot of the mods started wandering off, then members. Just the diehards left now and the occasional newb who hasn't found this place yet.

I agree that it is best not to speak ill of someone for no real rhyme or reason. It's a shame that the discussion escalated to the point where Glen felt the need to delete his account. It should have never progressed so far. But what is, is. Glen has left and if he feels the desire to come back, I know many of us will welcome him warmly. He may not post what everyone wants to hear, but that's not the point of an opinion, especially an informed one. And Glen was full of information, regardless of any disagreements he and others have had.
James, PM sent.

I don't feel all that welcome at my Armoury because most of the members are my academic superiors.
I don't feel all that welcome at SFI because most of the people have years of training beyond me.
Here...well, I just feel as if I'm alright.

Here...well, I just feel as if I'm alright. M. I visit both those sites often, but a lurk alot more then I post. Why? There is a lot to learn there just by reading and going threw the log of threads and posts and articales. However, sometimes when you ask a question over there, well, sometimes you get some snide remarks. Not always, but sometimes. I post now and then, if I see something I actualy can help with or have an answer for...

It can be pretty intimidating, especially if you're verbose like me.

I was pretty much there at the beginning of myArmoury (2003) learned a lot, put a lot time, money, contributions etc. into it, have met Nathan and Chad in person at the 2004 Atl Blade Show...but over time, like many, started to get belittled comments and such from one of the "higher ups" and that left a real bad taste in my mouth. I still float around there and SFI ( for the antique & WMA side of things), but this place is now home.

My Armoury kicked me out when I tried to help a beginner with how to make swords, and show what I had made, like I do here. I hadn't paid as a sponsoring manufacturer and vendor. By trying to help someone with how to make a sword, they said (and didn't like) that I was drawing attention to the fact that I am a sword maker, and thus using their resource to promote myself. They suspended my rights, said I need to apply for M&V status, but wouldn't tell me how, and won't reply to any email I send them. I don't think I'm missing much. SBG forum is heaps better. At least I can still look at the pretty pictures there.
It was silly, I had Chad saying yeah that's cool, then Nathan coming along 3 minutes later deleting my post saying 'Nah', And I mean 3 minutes. I think he just sits there checking every new posts like a hawk.

I have long suspected some forums of promoting selected swordmakers and armorers.
Most of you guys probably don't know the "Tire Pell" story at SFI. This goes back to the beginning of 2005-2006. The nature of a particular discussion at SFI was that all swords in the $200-$300 range were trash and would break if every struck against anything. I did not think this made sense. I found and old tire, stuffed it in a milk crate, and started hitting it to see what would happen to the swords I owned at the time. Well nothing happened to them. When I posted my results on SFI people went APESHIT. The reaction was something similar to Galileo stating that the earth revolved around the sun. Then we went through a period of me doing more testing and reporting... having my thread closed and being told I was an idiot. Obviously some people felt very threatened by the information.
Around the same time Paul Southern had a similar experience with some test cutting he did. They closed his threads too at SFI. Ironically that that is motivated him to start SBG... which is now eclipsing SFI.

which is now eclipsing SFI. Uhhh, which HAS eclipsed SFI. SFI is more like a library now, great for reference but semprini for current events

Oh boy, I know that story all too well. I watched the entire thing unfold...that's the moment when I realized Bill wasn't some crackpot out for attention...you gotta read the original threads if they even exist anymore. It was like the entire forum took up arms against him and he was fighting solo...kinda awe inspiring really. Can't tell you how many times I've seen others fold under the onslaught of 'experience' - too cowed to assert themselves in the face of such an august body of intellects. The arguments they made, such as 'that isn't realistic' or 'you are being irresponsible, you could get hurt or someone else could get hurt trying to emulate you' or 'those tests don't prove anything as the swords aren't being used in the manner for which they were made', 'uhhh...that isn't how it was done or that's not smart or dude you're stupid or whatever...', and more. I give Bill props; he never quit, he never ate his points but asserted himself even still, all while he keeping up with his tests and posting the results on his website- and I followed along, watching, reading and learning. I'll admit, some of my pre-conceived notions about certain swords come from having read his critiques and later handling some of them on my own to see where I stood. Either way, if I never said it before, I'll say it now- thanks Bill, for being that inspiration. Back then, they all laughed at him (but not me; I was an outsider anyway so my words had no weight even if I had done so)...now its a ghost town over there. I guess the burgeoning level of expertise was too much? Who knows. Also, who's laughin now?
