I recently mentioned in the Hanwei Tinker Longsword thread (here: /index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=12183&page=2#200888 ) that I knew of strikes that use the portion of the blade near the cross guard in a smashing mace-like stike and that it could do serious damage.
wel I decided to shoot a video to demonstrate. I start out using my MHAT type XII which there was no way I was gonna risk messing up on anything harder than milk jugs. it is sort of sharp all the way down to the hilt and you can see from the vid that I get successful cuts with that portion of the blade. they aren't as pretty as cuts out on the COP but they cut. palstic, even of the milk jug variety, is touger than human skin but that's not the real issue here. it's hard to translate how hard I'm hitting the targets but just let me say that while it is pretty hard it is no where near as hard as I have hit people with rattan (ok except for that one hit- you'll know it when you see it) secondly I cut with my EMSHS using the blunt portion of the blade. notice that any target with enough weight will be cut while he light targets fly away. I also demonstrate the toughness of the sword.
now please do not try this yourself. I did about an hour of setting up and figuring out before I decided this was safe enough to try. certainly not SAFE though. that's why I'm wearing a steel helm with safety glasses underneath. the shield probably didn't do much but it made my soft squishy bely feel less exposed.
I have a lot of faith in the durability of this sword.

Very interesting. But honestly... what was "unsafe" about anything you did there? Some might argue that the strike on the brick was " sword abuse"... *gasp*... but not really IMO. Most medieval cutting and cut&thrust swords have an edge from the tip to the guard because they were intended to be used for hard contact, from the tip to the guard. If you can, showing a slow motion from 1:34 to 1:37 will show something very interesting too, I think. Bravo for exploring an often neglected portion of the blade... and for making me think that now I need an EMSHS.

Mike, I would love to hear your opinion on the EMSHS but I realy don't know how mine compares since mine has an extra beefy grip and the whole deal had been shortened by 1.5-2 inches AND I'm using Valiant furniture. but with your skills in mounting I'd say you could REALLY enjoy an EMSHS replacement blade you mount your self. if what I'm seeing from the H/T bastard sword is typical of that lines grips and scabbards I'm just as happy not to have them. the crosses and pommels in the line seem nice but the grips and scabbards are just bad from what I've seen. me no likey! "If you can, showing a slow motion from 1:34 to 1:37 will show something very interesting too, I think." you are talking about all the flex when it hits the brick right? yeah I thought about doing that but I wanted the full speed up first without distraction. I think I'll give that a whirl tomorrow
Ric, thank you. no worries about the stop-shield I obtained it through legal channels. there are advantages to the USCG having been department of Trasportation until recently AND in having friends who work for the Wisconsin DOT. ;D

Milk jugs were cut easily with the blunt part. That's interesting.

there's a video out there on the interwebz somewhere that shows a guy cutting tatami with a blunt longsword. just goes to show how much force can be applied with a sword. and that sharp or not it is still an effective weapon. but don't we all just love sharp better? ;D

There is also a video on youtube of a man with a blunt bastard sword cleanly cutting a rather large bamboo pole. It makes me respect blunt swords more, but I still like sharp best.

If you can, showing a slow motion from 1:34 to 1:37 will show something very interesting too, I think. Yeah, I thought I saw some serious flex in the blade right there. It just goes to show that something has to give, either blade or target...

this sword is very stiff in the forte but the whole thing flexes a lot I find it very interesting. I think tomorrow I wil do a video showing the flex in the cut versus the flex in hand.
Hiroshi, that would be turkey leg abuse. ;D

True, only Ryansword Katana can chop iron, and cut a hole in the space-time continuum, allowing you to travel backward and forward in time at will.
