I have been experimenting with wire wrapped hilts lately. I've had trouble anchoring the wire so it doesn't slip or slide. I figured out that the wire needs something to grip that is softer than the wood core. I wrapped black annealed steel wire right over the original leather of my grip. I also decided to go ahead and make gold pommel and cross guard to go with the black. what do you all think?

I like it. One sailor to another- that's a nice bit of fancywork with the wire wrap but are you sure white cotton cord wouldn't look better? Maybe with a turkshead knot fore and aft?
The gold looks good too.

I like it, Tom. I think that it looks more LOTR like now.

The gold color on the furniture looks nice... but the wire over the grip doesn't work for me... looks like an afterthought. I think the riser in the center is part of the problem with that. Also, I didn't notice how the grip bulges out over the guard on this sword when I saw it... it looks odd, like it was not made for the sword.

I think the gold looks sweet! The wire...not so much. Not my cup of tea, I suppose. I'd guess I'd prefer the look if there was a lot more wire (like a full wire wrap from crossguard to pommel) or none at all. The gold, though, that's awesome. How'd you do that? Just heat, or some finish?
Might do that to mine....

yeah I'm not loving the wire wrap either it will eventually have to go. it was an idea, something I wanted to try out.
as for the gold coloring I just applied a propane torch to the part until it was a nice gold color then I cooled it. I dunked it in water. you don't need to cool it fast but I wanted to so I could handle it sooner.

Nice) I like the coloration on the guard and pommel. I think the wire wrap has potential. If you were to file the risers flat (at the ends too) and re-do it, it would look even better.

EXCELLENTLY DONE, TOM! +1! I, too, dislike the wire wrap... but it is redeemed and then some by the superb heat coloration of the fittings. They look fantastic. In fact, after having seen your thread about this on the VA forums, I talked to Sonny and he's willing to try doing some heat-colouring when I buy my long-awaited 304S. Thanks to the custom sword shoppe, it'll be the normal hilt parts, but gold like yours, and the hilt will be finished off with a elegant Oxblood wrap. I'm a little bit aprehensive about how it will turn out, merely because I haven't seen it, but I can't see how it wouldn't look fantastic. I mean, Sonny seems to know what he's doing, lol! Sorry to hijack your thread, Tom, but what do you guys think about my idea? Would you change anything? Thanks, and great job, Tom! ;D -Slayer

I think the idea sounds great. also if Sonny has a kiln that can control the temperatures well he can get many different colors. gold is the first color you get and the easiest to attain (for me anyway. I had the cross guard on my EMSHS sapphire blue at one point. I didn't keep it because it wasn't even. there were a few spots I couldn't get to color. but it is possible. the more I play with coloring parts the easier it is and the more colors I can get. if you don't like it just sand it off and try again. easy.

Now that Sonny's doing the leather work in-house, I think the gold hilt parts would look great with a black wrap and some strategically spaced risers, but I've always been partial to black and gold/yellow, so hey. Oxblood is dark enough that it will really contrast nicely.
