The one on top, what nation is that from? Looks almost Cheyenne, except for the duck.

I'm pretty sure you're free to hijack your own thread as much as you like Also, very nice looking flutes. I used to spend all my internet time at the applicable car and motorcycle sites, now I'm here and never get over there anymore

Some of my flutes are made by members of recognized native tribes, and some are made by non-indigenous persons. The sound mechanism style on that one is Eastern Woodlands style. The block is just a stylized bird, but if you see a duck, that's ok. ;D

Nahhh, lol, thats what the slide block is sometimes called, mainly on Cherokee flutes. ooookay. Many, many names for that piece of wood, and many ways to carve them. I have wolves, hawks, sparrows, bear claws, purely abstract shapes, etc. I've seen everything from beautifully carved ravens, cranes, geese, snakes-just name it. Even inset with blown glass or semiprecious stones. The block is sometimes called just a block, a fetish, a bird, a totem - depends on who is talking about it. Technically it is a fipple. I'm not certain what you mean by "Cherokee Flute" unless you mean a woodlands style. I know dozens of flutemakers, and styles are usually divided as Plains or Woodlands, depending on the sound mechanism. I make only woodlands style. Rim blown flutes such as Anasazi are another kettle of fish and are classified separately. A better place to discuss flute classifications in detail is over on the Flute Portal forums. I go by "Jimbo over there.

I get kinda grumpy where I here about Faires with 'No Weapons' policies... I've been going to RenFaires for over 15 years... and I have never seen, no heard of, any attack with weapons, fight with weapons, or any sort of weapons related dispute in all that time. Are there REALLY enough issues with weapons to warrant a weapons ban?!?!? Seems to me if so, I would have seen or at least heard of maybe ONE incident, but as of yet, I have not. Grrrr. Just more alarmist PC bullcrap.

Seems the Kansas City renfest is one of the larger ones in the country, but one of only a handful with a policy forbidding weapons. The only ones allowed with weapons are their own actors/employees.

Bet "they" blame it on the insurance company. "For liability reasons".
I have a flute and I'm not afraid to play it.

I wonder if a Waster counts as a weapon to them... As I've been told by others who frequent KCRF, even wooden swords are not allowed to be worn by guests.

Man, what has the world come to.? I go to the N.C. Renfair every year with my daughter, and there they kinda promote attendee participation. I don't dress up myself, but when you go to this one, its hard to tell who's staff and who's a visitor.

the MD ren-faire doesn't allow patron weapons and it's on of the biggest faires in the country.....one reason we don't go up there anymore. Avery, Talk has it we may drive down for the Carolina Faire - Charlotte in Oct....is this the one your talking about or the Raleigh Faire?

Man this world is turning to crud! Down with the insurance co. and lawyers!
Part of the magic of ren fairs is the armour and the swords. Especially for the kids. Take the weapons out and you end up with a watered down bug bunny and road runner cartoons, unwatchable and making no sense.
Just my .02 Rob

Just my .02 Rob It's not the insurance companies or the lawyers on this one. This is all about the anti-weapons folks and the people too spineless to stand up to them... (and here I go tip-toeing the "No Politics" rule immediately after a riposte across the "No Religion" rule... Ah well) Anyway, you could come up to Lancaster, PA for the PA Renne Faire. It's only about 2 hours from D.C. Maybe a little more. I've never gone directly between the 2.

Same exit that the Highland games is off of. If you make it down, let me know what weekend, maybe we can catch up with each other.
