Well, I stopped by my local Big Lots and they were out of beach mats, so I went to the one by where I work and they only had eight left....now how was I going to have fun with that?
How about roll them all up together..... ;D
I really thought I was going to have to muscle through this thing, but the Raptor Shobu went through it like butter and I almost hit the ground on the first swing. The Cheness I COULDN'T muscle through the roll. I've never sharpened it, but she's still paper dicing sharp....so maybe it was me, but the Raptor just went right through like it was nothing.

The reason you couldn't make good cuts with the kaze is because of your form. Have you been trained to use a katana? From your video I would have to say that you weren't because your cutting technique doesn't have the hallmark traits of training. That's not to say your cuts with the raptor were bad, I mean, you cut through 8 mats, that can't be all to do with the sword, now can it? . The only 8 mat cut I have ever perform was with an L6 custom made katana but that raptor is starting to look more and more interesting, I just wish that hanwei would do a kodachi version.

Wow that's a lot of mats. Interesting that you noted such a difference. Thanks for sharing!

I've never handled the Kaze... but I have cut with the Raptor Shobu, and it dose not surprise me you found it easier to cut with. The Raptor feels powerfull and cut-biased in hand... its got a bit more of a forward balance then most katana I have handled, and feels SUPER strong in the cut... I felt like I could cut just about anything with it.

Nice going mrkrinkle, that's a lot of mat to go through.
Interesting to see a Raptor pitted against a Kaze on the same material with the same cutter. Not to say the Kaze could not go through such a target with better form, but nice to see a comparison on an equal playing field.

hey maybe the raptor is a better cutter or maybe it just works better for him. any way you look at it that was a challenging target and some good cutting.
we have seen a few videos of really large beach-mat rolls but so far I haven't seen anything bigger than three mats with mugen dachi or hanwei tatami. maybe one of these days I'll do it. cutting that tripple mat was a lot of fun and when my form was on it felt like they weren't there so I wonder how big I can go. if only tatami wasn't so darn expensive. any way, good cutting +1

Nice cutting.... and music...
I dont know if that was Primus, Oysterhead or the Frog Brigade, but I definitely heard Les Claypool's hands all over it....

Cool comparo man...all commentary of your form aside, I did learn two things....I like the look of that Raptor and I'm turned off from the Kaze. Thanks for sharing.

I didn't get to cut with your Kaze, but I did handle it for a bit... and I cut lots with a Raptor Shobu. The Shobu is a more cut/slash focused style of blade... and the Raptor is a bit heavier... with the weight coming more forward... which make it a more natural cutter, tho not as fast or as easy to change directions as the Kaze. I think those double mats over the bamboo were the best target I have seen in a long time...

yeah I really wish I had made more mats-on-bamboo targets for that day, those were a LOT of fun and we didn't have any shortage of mats that day.

The Raptor definitely just feels better. The albeit beefy handle really helps with hasuji because you can 'feel' the alignment all the way through the katana. I tell you, it may look ugly, but I know in my mind I had a good angle and edge alignment with that Kaze, it just didn't want to go all the way through the roll. I tried to keep a decent push pull motion as well. I'm sure with practice I could probably get through a target like this with the kaze (though it's kinda hard to get a lot of practice on a target like this, even half price, this was $11 I chopped through). The Kaze really seems heavier as well, not that the Raptor is light.
The Raptor has replaced the Kaze as my favorite cutter. I gotta thank Marc at Wiwingti for helping me decide. I wanted a Shobu and it was a toss up between his economical, the Cheness, the Dynasty Forge or the Raptor. He suggested the Raptor and I went for it. Glad I did.
Mr. Ridgeway, I gave credit to Colonel Claypool's Flying Frog Brigade at the end of the video. Marc, if you haven't gotten Les Claypool - Of Whales and Woe...you really must.

nice, very nice. I always wondered if your name was a reference to that primus song. I saw the video for mr krinkle when I was in the 5th or 6th grade on MTV. Changed my life...

Yes, definitely reference to the Primus song. Les Claypool is a genius...and a tad twisted. Ever since I picked up Seas of Cheese back in '89 (wow, I'm old), I've been hooked. There is nothing like Primus, even some search engines put them in their own genre....metal, classic rock, jazz, reggae, primus....LOL. BTW, I did win the UBC Wow Me contest with this video. Appearantly Randy was impressed.
