I have respect for anyone who has been in combat, regardless of who they are. I know that I would cowar on the spot and probably die before even attempting to attack. I simply have more respect for some than others. Well, with thinking like that, no wonder! I like to think that in situations such as this, people with true valor in their hearts will shine nonetheless. It is the capacity for compassion, empathy that can bring about true, unfiltered aggression in the defense of one's hearth and home - any heroic act you read of wasn't done on behalf of the hero, but of some greater cause. Not everyone's a hero, but everyone has that quality in them, whether they ever see or get to use it. If it were just you, yes, you might behave like that- you're a young man still, much of life still unexperienced, but if your family were with you and all that stood between them and horrific experiences was you- I sincerely doubt you'd cower or flee. I don't see that as being part of your character, but then, this is the interwebz, as random is fond of saying, and as such, we don't really know anything.

I like to think that I would have the courage to fight, but I may never know the truth.

I have actually considered joining a branch of the military, but I don't believe that I will. However, if a major war was to happen suddenly, I would probably join.

I am struggling with my recruiter instincts and sales pitch here... Now that you've been warned that I might jump into that mode at any second... Why not?

I don't see the need at this moment. That's why I said that I would if a major war was to suddenly occur.

and yet with all this bathing that the Europeans didn't do when the Mongolian horde invaded one of the things that was commented on time and again was how badly they STANK. can you imagine what THAT stench must have been like to offend those deadened european noses? whoooooooooweee!

Apparently most Norseman during the Viking age bathed once a week (I believe it was saturday) but don't quote me on it. Yup, Saturday is actually called Laugardag in Scandinavia, modern Laurdag or Lördag, which means bathing day.

LOL @ bathing day
Hey, it seems like the Vikings were cleaner than the people they ended up subjugating. Who knows, maybe they introduced regular baths to the original Brits, Celts and Irishers they came in contact with!

The Romans introduced regular baths to the Britons, who promptly forgot all about bathing for a loooong time after the legions left. It doesn't appear that it caught on with the Celts or Irish until much later. Maybe from the Norse. IRRC the Norse were (and still are) big on steam baths and saunas.

It depended on where they were in the Isles, whether they forgot about bathing. Those around Bath, where the natural hot springs were, bathed regularly.

Yes, and they had the roman baths to use too.

I really don't see what the issue would be with urinating in armour. At least most types of field armour anyway. Jousting armour or something like that I could have issues with but honestly I don't think it would be that hard in a field harness. I've used a bathroom in my armour and it's ill-fitted and poorly made. A real suit would be better made and allow a larger range of movement. Defecating might be a different story but only if you couldn't reach. There really isn't any armour in the way except for maile. As long as you could reach behind to pull that up and your trousers down I don't really see the issue.
