Does anyone know where I could have a quality custom scabbard made, that costs LESS than my Del Tin No doubt expensive scabbards are beautiful, but I just cannot justify the price of a CF or DBK custom. Any help is greatly apprieciated

You might want to ask Odingaard about making you a scabbard, as I believe that he has recently started creating them.

You have to remember: you get what you pay for.
You want a quality, custom scabbard on the cheap...that's not likely to happen. Even Odingaard won't be cheap...he'll be cheapER, but not cheap. If you don't want to spring for a custom, you could still get one of the semi-custom swordless scabbards that Brian makes; he does'm in three different trim lines and none of them over $100 if I remember rightly.

Perhaps if you can find someone to make the wooden core you could cover it yourself. Or vice-versa. Good thin leather is expensive though and scabbard-making must be a time-consuming job, so it'll be a challenge to find a cheap scabbard maker, unless they're just starting out and anxious for the work (maybe?).

True, true, and doubly true on all of it. However, I AM just starting out and anxious for the work, so I'll do something fo pretty cheap. depending on the sword, I could make one for around $125-$170 with a suspension system, or $100-150 without. Leather wrapped in whatever color you want. Sound good? Shoot me a PM. -Slayer, the blatant self-promoter

I'd do one for you. The price would begin at $195, delivery in 2-3 weeks, upgrades/options cost a little more.
Let me know what you want and I can get you a better quote. ;D

Those Tritonworks scabbards have caught my interest. $140 for a scabbard like what they show seems like too good of a deal to me.

I don't wish to speak for Russ, but I can advise if you are interested in a Tritonworks scabbard, you'll need to get on his waiting list. Right now I believe it's 18-24 months. I've been on the list for a year myself, because even though I do make my own scabbards, I definately am one for supporting his business efforts and lower cost custom sword leather. He makes a great product for the money.

I have been on the Tritonworks waiting list since September 2007. No word yet. I occasionally send a query and hear "Not yet."

I'm not as good as Odingaard, and really don't want to infringe on his business, so if you can afford to get a scabbard from him, DO IT! His stuff is great.
HOWEVER, if price is a bit more of a concern for you, I can do a scabbard for a regualr shaped sword (as in, not leafblade, crazy curved shamshir, etc.) for around $120. That's leather wrapped, poplar wood core, dyed essentially whatever color you want (purple, light green, dark green, 5 shades of brown, blue, black, tan, even yellow) AND has a suspension system (AKA, a belt and buckle that attaches to the scabbard to hang it from your waist). Oh, and fancy riser configurations and stuff don't raise the price for me. A lot of what I charge is going for supplies, and since risers really don't require anything expensive to do, I just do those fu=or fun and practice.
I think I've priced my work decently enough to let some budget-minded sword enthusiasts give me a bit of practice, but I still want to defer to Odingaard's work as being a bit higher quality. Still, my stuff is a LOT better than anything that would come with a production sword.
Also, if you are only worried about a high-quality wooden core, contact Brian at DBK. He does wool lined poplar wooden cores for $100, which is a steal considering his skills. I could take one of those and do all of the afore-mentioned leather work for about $70...
This is all just speculation, of course. ;D
Whatever you choose, enjoy your sword and I hope that everything turns out well for you!
Sincerely, Slayer

Well, I kinda just started. ;D But I'm getting better! Man, I really need to update my scabbard making thread... the only stuff in there makes me look like a complete moron. If you ever have a project for me just shoot me a PM. I'll never take on something that I feel is above my skill level, and anything I 'DO' commit to make will be made as well as I know how. As I told another forumite who PMed me earlier today expressing interest in a scabbard, So, that's roughly my ideals. I don't have much experience, but I do have a lot of free time and will spend as much time as possible on a project to get it to a point where I am satisfied; both with my work, and that the recipient will be satisfied. Oh, and I also make custom quivers as shown in yeoldegaffer's tutorials. I'm trying to find someone who can teach me how to make sword and dagger frogs, but I haven't had any luck so far. But hopefully I'll offer those in the future. I actually had the idea of offering my services a few weeks before Odingaard made his announcement. But since he did that, I figured I might as well jump on the bandwagon, even if our ideas hadn't been influenced by each other. Later. P.S. You know what Jonathan? If you'll buy that 303S in the classifieds, I'll make a custom scabbard for it at cost. How's THAT for a deal? ;D -Slayer

Perhaps I will send you my future-fable-blade to make me a scabbard eh slayer? Depends on my budget. If I do not have much, I will ask you to do it. If I have enough, I might be getting Dand or Odingaard to do it. I won't be able to have the sword in my house for a whole year, so might as well have it worked on.

If what you want is a LOW costing one, still custom, I'd go for a Schmitthenner. As far as I know, they cost from $45-$65. No wood core (as far as I know. You'd have to contact them), but some of them looked pretty decent in the pics. If that's not the kind of think you're looking for Tritonworks is awesome; just a really long waiting list.

Ecept that an only-leather sheath is bad for swords. Depending on the sheath and sword, somtimes no amount of oiling will keep a leather-sheathed blade from rusting. It works well for knives, but is generally onsidered a BIG no-no for swords. Still, if price is that much of a concern, leather alone is better than nothing. Just hope your sword isn't that sharp... -Slayer EDIT: Spelling
