Interesting. I am tempted to get the viking and the norman, but then I won't be able to get the awesome VA 304S. The trade off is torture.

personally Jon I think I would get the EMSHS and the 304s. the EMSHS is just rediculously good and I love the shape and style of it. the EMSHS is a type XII which is THE most classic sword design ever for single hands and you would have a XIIa in the 304s so your kit would match chronologically. . . seems easy to me but then I've made my decision. ;D

That's true, and a very good point. I hate the fact that I love the looks of the viking and the norman too, because now I am having to pick two swords out of four.

I always thought a type Xa was a good middle ground between Norman and crusades knightly. the pommel on this one puts it much more towards the viking end of that range in my thinking. the big thing I'd reccomend to you as to why to NOT get this (H/T Norman) is the pommel. yup some people love the Brazil nut pommels but they are mostly serious viking/Norman enthusiasts with enough experience to understand the unusual shape and how it works. some people find it drives them nuts. a nice round pommel will be the least likely to bother you, but it may still cause trouble simply because you aren't experienced in using a sword. even still I think a round wheel pommel will give you less possible trouble. that's why I think you would like the EMSHS.

Tom, Just to clarify: you are comparing to the first gen 303s. The second gen is quite different. Definite distal taper and lighter than first gen (mine weighs in at 2lb 2oz). It also has a lenticular shape past the fuller. I am also curious that you say there is little profile taper. Mine has rather dramatic profile taper going from 1 3/4" at the base to 3/4 just before the point. Can they have changed that much? Harmonic balance is harder for me to define but I can tell you mine offers little vibration in the hand even on flubbed cuts. And it sings-oh-so lovely when cutting . Not that it changes much. It sounds like the EMSHS is a really fine sword. You can't go wrong with either. I await Tom's review eagerly

Chris, the second gen blade shape definitely HAS changed much. Having owned both, I prefer the profile taper of the previous gen, but everything else about the second gen is fantastic. Maybe Tom will trade me his first gen blade for my second gen blade, and we keep our hilts.

I have been wondering about what swords were used in LOTR. It says that Aragorn has a shield in the book, doesn't it? If he did, wouldn't he have a single handed sword or hand and a half sword?

He would be using swords similar to the Migration Period weapons. Rohan and Gondor are based off of Anglo-Saxon and Late / Post Roman cultures, respectively.

No, Boromir has a shield. Aragon has just Anduril which is a longsword.

Which was missing about a foot of the blade from the tip initially, until it was reforged. (Aragorn's sword) - in the movies he carried two different swords whereas in the book, he carried the broken Narsil.

Rest assured, it won't be the last...it truly will not. As for Aragorn's sword, I'd think it would be a Migration-era long sword, maybe even along the lines of a Gaddjhalt. The swords in the movie were made to spec as to look rather more formidable. In the books, Narsil was missing about a foot of the blade from the tip initially, as it broke under Sauron's foot- until it was reforged as Anduril. (In the movies he carried two different swords whereas in the book, he carried the broken Narsil. )

I was referring to when the Felloship left Rivendell in the book. I could have sworn that Aragorn had a shield as well.

I cut with the stock edge on the Tinker. It can cut through bottles but not quiet all the way. I teted it out on a small water bottle and listerine bottle. It did cut both but again not all the way through.

This is not good. I plan on getting two tinkers, and I don't want them to be dull.

True, but it could just be the old Hanwei edge.

Ok Jonathon, I'm sick of all this waffling back and forth. here's my offer to you just because I care:
ship any Hanwei/Tinker sword(s) you buy to me, allow me to do a full review of them complete with cutting. if there is anything wrong with them that warrents a return I will deal with that for you. Also you must buy them from Wiwingtiswordsupply.com and you must have them to me no later than Friday September 11th (meaning you need to buy them within a day or two). in addition to quality checking them and dealing with the company if anything is wrong I will sharpen them for you to any sharpness level you desire from factory sharp to Super Tom Sharp and when you receive them they will have a good edge geometry. all you have to do is send them to me first. act fast, this offer expires very soon.

I am not going to take advantage of your kindness like that, Tom. I will sort out any problems myself. I appreciate your offer, but I shouldn't get special privileges just because I complain. Still, it's the thought that counts.
