Hi everyone,
Just a quick question. If you were going to buy a viking or dark age sword in the $300.00 price range, which would you choose? It must be fully functional. Thanks

Hands down, the Hanwei/Tinker Viking sword. It can be had for ~$270 - www.kultofathena.com. Check out the Reviews section- nothing but good stuff on that sword. For the sub-$300 price range, I don't think you'll find one better. Windlass makes a couple decent ones at that same price point so there's some variety there. Of them all tho, the Tinker one's going to be the best.

I read the reviews and everybody seems to love this sword. If I order the sharpe blade and its not sharpe enough for me what would you suggest you use to sharpen it. thanks

Do you have sharpening skills? If so, you're in luck...this blade's hard but once sharpened, its like a laser, so I hear. If you don't, ask around, there's a number of links to how-to videos and advice. I think Tom K. does it on the side, you could ask him for tips and tricks.
But first, you need the sword...from what I understand, Hanwei may have finally gotten the edge geometry right so it should cut right out of the box.

I own a Tinker viking and love it. Except for the edges that it came with, very bad secondary bevels. Now these Tinker/hanwei swords have been undergoing some upgrades on the edge department so you might get one with a functional sharp edge. If not do what Ebon said follow the videos or get in touch with somebody like Tom K. The last and possible more expensive option is to order one from Tinker tuned by him. I know he does it for the longsword so he might do it with the viking to.

I have to admit, the Tinker looks to be a damn fine sword. I've had several viking blades, but the only one I've reviewed so far was the windlass "Leuterit". I've done alot of cutting with it after the review, and it's still held up well. Heres a link. /index.cgi?board=swordreviews&action=display&thread=6536&page=1

The Leuterit is one of Windlass' more attractive swords...that Avery stands by it is good enough to warrant me getting one if I were so inclined.

Paladin I think I'm very inclined. It is a beautiful sword, and the weight is just right to me.

Heya Starstuff
Bought a Tinker Viking and its the best blade in my collection now even in my opinion beating my Darksword Armoury and Cold Steel Swords. The edge isnt to bad but could use more work.
Hanwei have a bit of trouble negotiating western sword edges, I think with their katanas, their used to getting the geometry spot on, sharpening and polishing with wet stones but euro blades are a whole other kettle of fish.
But edge aside (which isnt bad just not perfect but hey GREAT PRICE). Its a real good cutter, and also practice makes perfect, alot of people blame an edge when its really their form.

Hmmm, dont know how this got in the Ancint sword section, but if I had the extra $$$ The Tinker is the best buy hands down, nobody, and I mean nobody can beat it.................SanMarc.
(Now if I just could come up with about a grand and a half.....The "Hake Dem" would be mine!!)

Avery, are you still happy with the sword? It is very beautiful. Yeah, all in all I'm still happy with it. I've heard people have had problems with the hilt assembly becoming loose or that the bronze finish wears off the lozenges, but I haven't had either occur to mine. The other gripe some have is the flex, they consider it a little too "whippy". I think if the blade were a little longer, I would agree, but as it is now I'm fine with it. One thing, though. If you order it sharpened it'll have a secondary bevel. Mine came sharp as hell and the secondary bevel isn't a deal breaker for me, but to some it is.

I know that Tinker claimed that the edge problem was solved, but the review posted today about the Tinker norman stated that the edge was horrible.
