Hey, folks. I'm hoping you can help me out with a sword-buying decision I'm trying to make! I've been in the market for a functional Conner McLeod sword for years, but I can't decide between the Global Gear and Zeist Armory versions. Specifically, I'm looking at the G-917V2 and the Highlander H2. I've done some research and both definitely blow the United Cutlery version out of the water in terms of durability and quality construction, both a bit over the $500 mark (with shipping), but I can't firmly come down on either side yet. www.globalgear.com.au/prod2842.htmwww.zeistarmories.com/Highlander_H2_Movie_sword/p145866_282464.aspxI'm sure most of you have seen the excellent review of the Global Gear (http://www.sword-buyers-guide.com/highlander-sword.html), so I thought I'd add what one of the manufacturers (Ben DeLeon) had to say about the Zeist Armories version when I emailed him: "I've personally seen these swords cut through a metal paint bucket with ease. Of course this was during destructive testing and should not be attempted or duplicated. They are able to handle dojo cutting including tameshigiri, goza and green bamboo cutting." Do you think that trumps the Global Gear version? Thoughts? Am I way off base here? Thanks in advance for any help and feedback, guys!

Well... Zeist Armories is named after the planet in the second movie... and they have a quote from the second movie in the discription of the sword. Any TRUE Highlander fan knows... there WAS no second movie. Every true Highlander fan knows to ignore ANYTHING that relates to the never happened second movie. ;D So bassed on that alone, I would not deal with them.

Haha, they say the name is a joke. I agree, though--the second movie does not exist. Nor does the last one.

I'm not a Highlander fan...but even I know the 2nd and 4th films were fluff...the 2nd one didn't make any sense to me, from what I remember. Aliens? That's original. And the 4th one...maybe its just me, but I'm not a Mario Van Peebles fan so whenever I see he's in something, I'm usually not that interested. Except for two movies...Solo, and Posse. And maybe Panther.
Anyway, the Zeist armories one looked pretty close to the movie one...might wanna go with that.

Yeah, I liked the Highlander series a bit more than the movies, but even I freely admit that the series was only good about half the time, and the movies in general are pretty bad. I thnk Adrian Paul is a better actor than Christopher Lambert but "Endgame" and "The Source" are very nearly unwatchable. The problem is that the writers keep totally (and often badly) reinventing the show's mythology every time out.
FYI for anybody also interested in these swords, I've emailed both Zeist Armories and Global Gear a few times with questions and they've been VERY accommodating and quick to answer. I think I'm leaning more towards the Zeist Armories version now, although I'll have to wait a few weeks until the next check rolls in (I'm salaried and only get paid once a month). I hope to post a review of it down the road.

Why is there a whole $100 difference between the two? Quality?
Hey Viking/Ninja, I am sorry...I have never watched the movies. But I'll just try to make a few observations of my own. From my humble opinion, it looks like the Global Gear guys know more about what they're doing. I have no facts to back it up, but they have a lot more information (i.e. pictures, video, specs) than the other site. Plus, they're also a little lower on the price.
Like I said, I'm not an expert, but if I just had to choose, it would probably be the Global Gear one...at least I get to see the whole sword before I buy it. Best of luck to you!

im like the only guy who likes Endgame Maybe, I thought it was outright aweful. For me, I liked the first movie, and the first 5 seasons of the TV show. Any other movies or later seasons of the show were bad... really, REALLY bad. The third movie only had one thing going for it... a cookie for whoever knows what it was.

I never understood people's fascination with this (ugly) Katana, but I guess some would not understand mine with the master sword. My vote goes to Global Gear, I hear mixed reviews, but they were generally good.

The first movie was good. That is all.
I'll tell you why I didn't like the series, even tho I'll admit, Adrian Paul was a better lead, is the crap swords they gave their actors to use. Anyone seen that Methos sword on eBay?
UGGLY. So uggly it needed two g's to make that point. At least you can tell its a wallhanger at first glance.

For me, I think my interest does come partially from the movie and the TV series, but also because I prefer katanas that have a "non-traditional" handle. Personally, I find the cotton wrapping a little boring. Take, for example, for Cheness SGC Yamakami. Love the blade and cutting power, but I'm bored with the handle design. I know, I'm weird. Also, not to give TMI, but my mother bought me a Marto Highlander sword for my birthday when I was a teenager--then she died unexpectedly of a heart attack, literally the day before the sword arrived. I always thought of that sword as the last thing she gave me. We ended up having to return it because of $$$ problems, though, which I always regretted. I've since learned that the Marto blades are a sham, so I've been looking for a higher quality Highlander sword for about 12 years.

You know, you should search around...there's a thread floatin around by one of our members who got the actual wax castings of the Highlander hilt directly from the production company. He mentioned he was going to make a couple of them (swords) - you might want to see if he'd be willing to sell one to you. He wasn't going to make a wall hanger, I'm pretty sure on that.
I'm sorry to hear about your loss...I couldn't imagine what it'd be like for me when my mom goes...doubly sorry to hear you had to let go of the last gift she gave to you on this earth.

You all have heard of Sal D'Aguila right? His site sells his swords for a grand and up. Zeist uses similar construction methods (kevlar/carbon fiber core) as well as offers a San Mai blade for less than Sal's cheapest. Add that with molds from Jose De Braga which are among the most beautiful and screen accurate you can find, (not a Taiwanese knockoff with a gem on the side) Zeist is clearly the better deal.
But everyone is entitled to their opinion. But remember what is said about jumping to a conclusion before you get the facts...

The background in the pic for Zeist's highlander sword is unproffessional looking. Who around here was gonna make some highlander swords?

The background in the pic for Zeist's highlander sword is unproffessional looking. Who around here was gonna make some highlander swords? Bit of a long (and likely moot) story. There was a member who wanted to make some Highlander swords, claiming to have some of the castings for the handles. Another member (Ronin Katana) apparently had some sort of beef about this, and shortly after, Paul locked the thread. The Member who wanted to make the highlander Katana has not logged in since Jun 26th, so I think the issue is quite dead now. Here is the Thread: /index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=10883

So you're basing your opinion of Zeist Armories' swords on the look of their website? Really?....that's interesting.

Of course, shinsei- that is the value in advertising. People buy based off of what they can see, not what they know off-hand as they don't know anything until they're holding it, in-hand. The more professional an advertisement looks, the better the chances that a consumer will notice and appreciate the item in question, maybe even drive them to buy it. It isn't rocket science, just business.
I'm a big stickler for such things...if I notice high-school level grammar and spelling errors, I'm less likely to treat it as something of worth, the site I mean. I know I'm not the only one.
That link that Sean provided was the one I was referring to earlier in this thread I believe...wonder what sort of beef could've arisen that precluded the making of those swords. I mean, did he hold copyrights to that property (I don't see how but who knows) or something?
