Hey everyone! ;D I thought about calling this thread 'The Slayer Revealed...', since it's the first time you've really gotten a glimpse of me, but I decided to go with the 'straight and to the point' approach instead. It's not like I'm camera shy, it's just that I've never had a real reason to post pictures/videos of myself before. (With the obvious exception of doing my FableBlades review, which I AM working on. ;D) Getting to the point, however... (pun intended) Recently I had a chance to acquire Tom K. (Ianflaer)'s tried & true good ol' Cheness Kaze katana (you know, the one that's been through half a dozen world wars with him ). You can see more about all that here: /index.cgi?board=feedback&action=display&thread=11555 Anyway! Upon arrival a few days ago, I was so impressed by the fantastic edge on this already superb sword that I felt that I just HAD to share how sharp it is with you guys. Add this to the fact that Tom has just offered his services as a sword sharpener, and I decided to be the first 'customer review' so to speak, of his famed 'Ianflaer Edge'. ;D I ended up using paper cards, standard 4"x6" size, as a cutting medium. They're certainly thicker than regular paper, but this beauty of a blade handled even the thinnest paper like a dream. So, here's the video I came up with... Enjoy, 'cause I sure did. ;D (If the video doesn't work for some reason, please let me know. This is actually the first time I've ever uploaded a video onto YouTube *hangs head in shame*, so I may have messed it up, LOL! Is that sharp, or is that sharp, people? Thanks for watching! (and yes, I am a klutz. ;D 'Oops, there goes the paper'. : Please forgive my messy bedroom, lol. I'm in the middle of a few sword-related projects, and stuff is kind of strewn about everywhere. I'll make a more detailed bottle-cutting video soon, but for now all I can do is assure you that this thing is a plastic bottle's worst nightmare... ;D -Slayer Spelling Edit

Well, you did a fine job on uploading the video. I look forward to the bottle cutting vid. Judging by the paper cuts, I'm sure it'll be fun!

Nice vid, Slayer, Tom does a great job, eh? Good to see you, watch those fingers. Lol. Thanks for the compliments. ;D Don't worry about my fingers; ever since my run-in with a Cold Steel kudu, I've been EXTRA careful. 9 stitches is something I do NOT plan on replicating anytime soon. 'Tom Sharp' is right, kenpachi. Although, I do prefer the flow of my own name for it, the 'Ianflaer Edge.' lol If it doesn't insist on raining today, I'll get a bottle-battling video up later... -Slayer

Slayer, thanks for the video, I just went out and watched it during lunch break. I must say that I would be very dissapointed if a sword I sharpened didn't cut that nice heavy note card stock. if you really want to challenge it get the thinnest paper you can. the trick is to keep all weight off the paper and follow the cut as it slices without letting any downward force happen. can be pretty hard to do but only a really sharp sword will cut paper towel or toilet paper or other really thin stuff without ripping.

True, most of my swords CAN cut those, but it was so easy with the kaze! The sword just seemed to put itself through the paper. I will do another vid with super-thin lined paper though.
Thanks for watching it. ;D

Would a sword that sharp even be practical? It's like a lightsaber!

sure it is. the trick is to not hit armor with it. the thing here Jon is that I didn't make the edge thin to get it this sharp. if you look at the edge it still has a lot of niku supporting it. I have cut through real thick bamboo, 4x4's and even hit a 14 ga. steel can with these edges without anthing more then the most minor of damage (the can did cause it to dull slightly nothing else seemed to touch it). but certainly if you were going to go onto the field of battle against armored enemies then you'd want to smash this edge in the sand some before you went. but for back yard cutting or dojo cutting it's great. the competition katana by hanwei are notorious for chipping on soda bottle necks and such because they are so thin. the sword Slayer is holding cut through a 4x4 (on accident please don't try that slayer) it also cut through a tripple roll of tatami, the longsword I have has the same sharpness edge and with that I cut through three mats AND a 1" ash dowel with zero damage to the edge and I barely felt the target.
so the short answer is yes as long as you aren't cutting anything wearing armor or made of metal.
and if you ever need to shave but suddenly realize that you left your razor behind, you're good to go. seriously I shaved my face with Slayer's Kaze once. and I got my whiskers down to military regulation smoothness at least on the cheeks and flater areas.

Don't worry, no 4x4 cutting for me. I DID get a TINY ULTRA MINISCULE chip on the kaze when I misjudged the height of a bottle and cut straight through the thickest part of the narrow part and then through the cap as well (it was a 16 or 20 oz soda bottle). But even that level of serious abuse only gave it a chip so small that I can't see it without being INCHES from the blade, and even then, only by looking down the edge. Basically, it's about 1-3 hundredths of an inch deep. Not bad at all. This is by far the strongest edge on any sword I've had other than my Cheness 30" Nagasa, and that's only because the Nagasa is, well... in need of sharpening, let's put it that way. Ianflaer knows his stuff. ;D seriously I shaved my face with Slayer's Kaze once. and I got my whiskers down to military regulation smoothness at least on the cheeks and flater areas. lol -Slayer

there's not getting around tiny little chips, if you look closely at the point you'll see a deep scratch on the side near the point of the kissaki. I have no idea what caused that, maybe a 4x4, maybe a bottle or a peg or some bamboo. I don't know what it is about Cheness' TH stuff but I've had bad experiences with it. maybe just bad luck, maybe my personality or something but I've always felt the kaze was tougher than the TH stuff by Cheness especially anything with a bohi. anyway, where's that bottle killing vid?

I totally agree. My point was just how LITTLE damage it recieved from an extremely harsh situation. When I cut the bottle's neck and cap in half, I was freaked out. But when I looked at the sword I just caught a tiny glimpse of the chip. It took me all of 5 minutes to find it again, lol. THAT's how small the chip is. Oh, and btw, you know that bottle I mentioned, the one that caused the chip? Even with that high strike through thick plastic, the bottle stayed right where it was. ;D This is both the only sword I've cut with that I can consistantly leave bottles standing and the only sword I've cut with that can consistantly cut empies. It's just awesome. I'll film the bottle'killing video tomorow; it decided to rain on us today. Stupid whether, didn't it know that I was going to be cutting today?!?!?! ;D -Slayer

It's just awesome. great, now you need to combine those two feats and leave the bottom standing on and empty bottle. . . sounds good Slayer, I'm looking forward to it.
