1 hand, two hands or bastard ? Any looks or period interest you more that the others ? The VA/Atrim practical ( longsword and arming ) are generally a good way to get started as are the tinker/hanwei's ( viking, longsword, bastard and arming ).

The VA Practical line might be your best starting point; those swords seem to be the best so far at that pricepoint. I have the Practical Arming sword (VA303S) - custom tuned variant from the first gen of those swords...its a mean little cutter.
I feel I should add that Windlass has a great many selections under that pricepoint but you should be aware that at times, their QC process can be hit or miss so, you could end up with a gem or a POS depending on the sword you get.

I agree that the Valiant Armory Practical swords (long AT304 and arming AT303) are the best sword that can be had under $300.
While the Tinker/Hanwei swords are very good I feel they have one major downfall that causes me to not reccomend them to new folks: their edge. they are notorious for having poor edge geometry and will most likely need sharpening which can be a real daunting project whether you are new or not. if you like their style and looks better, then by all means go for them. if you feel comfortable sharpening a sword you have a lot more options. if you don't know how you should learn, there's some good info in the general discussions board in a sticky called "sharpening and polishing" or something close to that. Windlass does make some very fine swords for their price range, just be sure to buy from KOA or some vender with known good customer service to aleviate QC issues. also Windlass need to be sharpened. some vendors like KultofAthena offer a sharpening service but it gives you a severe secondary bevel. I hear their edges cut ok but it cannot be as good as a properly done edge like Valiant Armory puts on or if you do it right yourself.

I have the longsword version of the VA/AT, and as Ebon stated it it's quite a cutter. And i have one of the first batch, they improved it over the next batches, so its a cant miss. On the con side they are a bit plain and the hex nut might bother some ( i personaly find it quite useful )

Fish around for the Windlass "Oakeshott Type IV". Quite good, and it's going out of production.

I'll just look at my sexy sexy CF/AT Antioch and everything will be all better. I guess I'll just have to get more Atrims then, oh well.

I have the 10c Viking, although not historically correct, you cant go wrong, look at the reviews of the knight sword, and you can get some of there close outs for a realy good price, thats how I got mine....SanMarc.

I would like to add a couple to the list:
Windlass 15th c. longsword
Windlass Verneuil (it's dis-continued, but if you can find one, well worth looking into)
I adore both of these models that I have.
Agree too, that the Valiant Armory / Atrim models or the Hanwie / Tinker line would be good starter choices as well.
Happy hunting!
cheers,
Bill

Umm you can go horribly wrong actually if you have the wrong idea of what a DSA sword is. They are tough little buggers...and if you need tough over other aspects of a sword, then they make an excellent choice. If you want more historical weapons...then they are a very bad choice.

Maybe we should find out what he intends to do with it before we advise him down any particular path. If he wants a backyard beater, I'd hope he'd opt for a DSA over an AT; just seems scandalous to use a well-made sword for some beat-on-board action. Just my opinion.
